Someone earlier mentioned Ouray if Moab was in the plans so that is something I'm considering. Is there any good wheeling in your part of the state?

Probably. I'm pretty much just familiar with a couple of trails where I go camping. www.Traildamage.com has a list of just about every trail in the state, but it doesn't seem to be updated often.

Hack Job could probably tell you more than me.

Like benhart said, traildamage is the go to for researching colorado wheeling. You can find a range of trails in most parts of the state. I haven't wheeled the ouray/telluride area, but it is ridiculously scenic. Black bear pass, the alpine loop (engineer and cinnamon pass), and Poughkeepsie gulch are on my to do list.

This is why people wheel in ouray. The whole series is a good sample of colorado.

Edit: Sidenote, tomorrow I'm taking my 15 month old daughter out on her first offroad trip. It will only be a notch or two over a dirt road, but I'm really looking forward to it.

I was looking at pics and videos of different trails and Black Bear Pass looks like a place I need to avoid. The wife doesn't like looking out the window and seeing huge drop offs that will kill you and those switchbacks would terrify her. We went to Yosemite last year and the drive up to Yosemite Creek Campground didn't sit well with her and that has two lanes and is paved.

It might even make me nervous. The videos I saw had XJ and ZJ Jeeps and it looked pretty damn narrow even for them. Although I did find plenty of people on Mud that do it in their Land Cruiser.

Ouray is awesome, sadly I'm probably only going to make one trip there this year. Heading there from the East most people will go through Gunnison, 149S out of Gunnison brings you to a small town named Lake City which is probably where I'll stay from here on out while wheeling in that region.

Stumbled across someone that had made a bad decision while on mosquito pass yesterday.

Ripped off 2 fenders again, I really should just remove my mud flaps before I go next time. Also included other trucks in the run.

Looks like it's going to be a Arizona, Colorado, and Utah trip this time. I'll probably try and make it to Rubithon next year.

This is a tentative route so far. The 3 places we want to go are the Grand Canyon, Moab, and Ouray. I get off work on the 31st and won't need to be back to work until August 19th. Should give us plenty of time.

That's about a 3000 mile trip right there just traveling to the places on the map. Fuel is going to be expensive, budgeting for 10 mpg will be $1200-$1500. I'll be buying an attachment for my rear bumper so I can carry a few cans of gas, and I'll probably get a cargo barrier too. And since we'll probably be on our own I was also thinking of something like a ResQLink PLB. Need to get a DC front shaft before I go, flush the brake fluid, get my HIDs working and get my sliders and new tires put on. Going to be a busy 3 weeks!

Is it going to be ok to tent camp for some of this? I've read that Moab is pretty hot in early August but I imagine at the elevations we'll be at in Colorado it won't be bad.

If any one you have any tips for a successful trip like this then I'm all ears. I've driven from one end of the coast to other but I've never done an off road trip like this.

I don't think the guy knew any better. I think he figured it was snow and he was going to break through it, when it was actually ice and he just slid.

If you know the approximate dates you're going to be in MOAB or Ouray, I'd try and make a stop by if possible.

I would say we'll probably be in Moab on the 4th or 5th and then be in Ouray that weekend.

I got out and ran the Middle Saint Vrain and Coney Flats trails this evening. I definitely need a lift after this trip, because I had some vicious impacts on my skids and sliders. Gonna have to check in the daylight for any damage that wasn't obvious, but I think the worst casualty is the plastic clips that hold a rear mud flap on.

Stock suspension poser flex shot with my copilot.

Lifting the rear tire.

The deepest water crossing, about halfway up the doors. Not a drop inside, and went a little too fast and got it up over the hood.

Just about to dive in.

The finish line, Beaver Reservoir.

Unfortunately I don't have any pics of the actual trails, I was too busy bouncing off rocks. A couple spots involved dragging, repositioning, and even a bit of tire smoke.

that water crossing always makes me nervous, especially early in the season. Still, the deepest water I've ever been in was on the highway during last years floods

The first trip with my daughter went well. Did the 235 bypass on switzerland (I don't think it has a name), and caribou. Wanted to fool around on eldorado, but had to get back for a family get together. Mild trails but they were wet and sloppy so it was a lot of fun.

She enjoyed fingerpainting in the dirt.

I was a little nervous about the crossing at first, but then the group I ran into coming up caught up and their buggy didn't even bother slowing down for it. I knew I was going to be fine after their mildly modified ZJ made it, albeit a little slowly.

Nice! A crossing that deep would definitely have made me nervous.

Do you have a certain lift kit in mind?

It flooded that bad there last year?

Looks like a fun trip, can't wait to be there in a few weeks!

Well, I just applied for a job at Toytec the other day, so probably their Boss Coilover kit.

It did. There's still canyons blocked off near me that were just ravaged. If you make it up near here, some of the canyon roads are open, but sections are dirt and you can see where the original road crumbled and washed away. Some of the emergency alert texts I got that night talked about literal walls of water coming down. I even lost a car that night coming home from work on a dark stretch of road and I drove into about 2' of water I couldn't see in time. Engine hydro-locked and water came inside past the seat bottoms(Saab 9-5). Took two hours for a tow truck to come pull me out.

Since the start is also the finish, I'd say it's under the "E".

So, all this jeep talk has got me so jeepy. Once I get my cast off near the other of the month I'm going to go test drive some jeeps.

Any advice/tips on what wrangler to get?

The final piece of the puzzle is installed. Put the Slee sliders on yesterday.

We'll be going to Superlift ORV Park in Hot Springs this weekend if anyone is local.

Took the truck out the other day and attempted to go through some mud holes... Considering I saw pictures of a couple of trucks stuck in them in the past couple of weeks I thought they would be fun, and they appeared to be pretty deep.
I rode through them like they weren't even there.
End result...truck barely got muddy:

Seems like a failure to me...but it's tough to get a truck muddy around here when you're on 49's(by 15 inches wide).

Thank you very much. By far this has been my favorite vehicle I've ever owned.

In other news, someone on Mud owns a shop and is almost ready to release a plug and play 6BT swap kit for these. That would be far in the future for me but it would be awesome to have one of those!

Did an oil change the other day after the first time wheeling with my skids on. Had a few hard impacts on some large rocks and even ended up with a nice dent in the oil pan skid, which is 3/16" cold rolled steel. the surprising thing was what it did to the grade 8 bolts that attached them to the cross members. Thankfully Roy at Savage is shipping out a new set of hardware so I can get that plate back on.

Your truck is so damn cool!

Side note: Why are snorkels pointed forward? Doesn't that increase the chance of airborn water getting in there?
