Modifications and Insurance
I saw a forum on the Toronto Subaru Club with numerous threads on the effect of modifications and aftermarket parts on insurance rates and insurability. More here
It seems that in Ontario you are obliged to inform your insurance company of major modification. To quote from one of the threads there: Quote:

Nope... if they did this in Alberta the government would be killed by Oil companies since a lot of oil company trucks are modified to accept higher loads or go off road... Red Deer would be devoid of half of it's vehicles! Plus, farmers like to get rid of cats in their exhaust systems... that's modifications.
If you modify your vehicle way beyond stock you can file for "special vehicle" insurance... you will need to have your vehicle appraised, though. |

when you get your insurance they do ask you if youve modified your vehicle. you then sign the form that says no you havent, if youve lied. so i guess they couldwalk away if they found out but only if your mods cause the accident

I have never been asked if my vehicle has been modified on any insurance I have gotten in alberta. And when my car was hit last fall my insurance company said they will put my car back to the way it was before the accident.....modifications and all.

Last time I checked with my broker, before upgrading brakes and suspension, there was no problem with that or minor power mods. They get a bit concerned about power mods like nitrous. They did suggest getting a licenced mechanic to do brake works, and to keep receipts.
It seems like there is more of an issue in Ontario right now, but I haven't heard of anyone having problems in Alberta yet. |
