Its a Perrin EL, still on the 910cc injectors. I have some five-0 1650's standing by for the built motor. Plan is to build the motor then see what I can do with the 1650's before I step-up to 2000+cc.

so far so good on pretty much everything. i dont rev the engine past 4600rpms, but i did notice in 2nd gear, i peak 10psi at around that time with no issues which gives me a lot of hope for 3rd gear i only have 500 miles on the engine, good enough to dyno now on pump gas. so look within the next week to see what this turbo can make on pump. |

Up because I saw some clown on evolutionm is going for the stock bottom end record with an HX40.
Has anyone strapped one of these Holset's into a subaru with a drop in kit, or has everything been one-off'd? |

Mine is installed with a standard Rotated kit. You'll need to make sure the Rotated kit will work with one of the available Turbine housings. T3 to VBand, T3 to 4 Bolt etc.
I'd like to try a HX40 to see how they would do, after I finish my build. |

351 cold side is same as HX40 (wheels are interchangable and flow the same 69-71lb/min), and hot side is 9cm, so very close to FP Black in terms of turbine size and lb/min capacity.

^ Isn't that the one you are running? So the main difference is the Turbine housing and fitment, correct?

Yea thats mine. Pretty sure the smallest 40 comes in a 14cm and they are rare. More commonly in a 16 or 18cm housing. The 351CW has a forward facing compressor that the 40 does not have as well. This makes it a bastard turbo for the DSM crowd and most traversly mounted inline 4 platforms (complicates IC routing/plumbing) but awesome for rotated Subaru. It eleminates the need for a welded on 90* or silicone elbow, its cast right into the compressor in a low profile. 35/40 hybrids are common and all kinds of stuff available for mixing and matching 35hot and 40cold sides. The 351 is specification wise no different than a 9cm 35 and 7-blade 40 hybrid. It was the last Ram Cummins production turbo before they went to the 351VE (VGT turbo). BEP makes a batmowheel for the HX40, same wheel drops into the 351 as well.

^ Agree. The only downside is that there is no aftermarket turbine housing available for the 351. You'll have to fabricate the OEM housing to fit 4 bolt or VBand, Like Albersondh did.

I'm pretty uninterested in that route. hx35 or 40, bep housing, profit.
Simple math to a big, uncharted win. POST SOME RESULTS IN HERE! |

looking at a holset turbo to go rotated with. but heres the catch: for now (and as long as possible till i can get a 6mt) i want to make only between 300-350whp since im also on the stock 5 speed im getting a large turbo also to keep the torque low early in the RPM range to protect the trans. im trying to decide between the HX35 or HX40. looking for spool between 3-4k and power holding solid to redline. would the stock HX35 12cm hot side do the trick or is it too laggy? if it is id look into an aftermarket BEP or tims hotside. that being said is the stock 4 bolt downpipe flange the same as the BEP/Tims 4 bolt flanges?
also, the HX40 compressor cover is larger than the 35 correct? also, which of the covers is the cleanest most "normal" looking cover, that dosnt have any nubs or brackets hanging off it? |

10 cm is non existent and would be too small for that turbo anyways 12 cm for a 40 is rare, 14 is fairly rare but not like the 12 and 16's are everywhere.

wait.. are you saying the 12 is rare or not rare?
when i say 10, i mean the .63 its actually 9.65cm right? and how do some of you feel about making a twin scroll? |

I'm saying it's extremely rare. So rare in fact i've only ever heard of them. We certainly dont see many of them come through the shop (cummins distributor in the northwest) and believe me, I've looked at 90% lf the turbos that have come through here. And reguardless of scemantics there is not a 10 cm (.63) twin scroll housing available for the hx40, or any holset turbo for that matter, at least to my knowledge. Bep and Tim's turbo offer some .63 single scroll options though.

So what would be a good option for a EJ257,, HX35 or HX40?

Either. Hx35 is like a gt30 flow and spool wise and a 40 would be similar to a 35 but would flow a bit more I believe but spool a pinch slower too

So i just spoke to tim at tims turbo. and he seems very turbo wise. he told me that the .63 turbo will flow a flat four up to 7200 rpm on my turbo setup. i questioned him and said well im running a 2.5l not a 2.0. and he still says it will support 600+ whp on a 2.5 up to redline, he has seen it.
i still dont know.. also aparently there is no such thing as a mathematical formula to figure out cm to ar. i searched a little for myself and found HUGE arguments in the diesel forum about it. there is also a .70 single volute and a .75 twin volute housing elsewhere i can get. what do you guys think is best on a 2.5? btw i have the hx40 with a 60/86 cold side and 70/60 hotside 12 blade. |

Im starting to see what a would setup would be, but first the turbo, ive seen some o ebay, as there was no yards were i can find the turbo localy, what would be a best bet, to find a used one and rebuild or buy one rebuilt already?
Also an adapter flange would be needed right?? (Want to use regular headers not custom) And as far as downpipe, it would have to be completely custom right?? |
