that Hottop is awesome. I kinda wish I had sprung for that one instead of my GeneCafe. Does it produce much smoke? Easy to hear the crack?

Not really worth it. They'll be stale by the time you get em.

first crack is audible over the high setting of the fan, second because of its pitch seems to blend in with the fan so I turn it off when I hear the first second crack |

Ordered a latte art pannarello wand to replace the crappy stock wand on the gaggia pure. I learned how to steam on a single outlet wand, so the stock one on this machine is just bugging me! (Already tried the o-ring adjustment. It helps, but it's not perfect.)
Is there any way to replace the whole arm? I've seen discussions where people can change out the wand on other gaggias, but never on the pure due to the way they designed it. Am I out of luck? I'm starting to pull some pretty good shots too. Still have a long way to go, though. |

I bought the latte art wand for our Gaggia after the original wand broke. Wifey does all the steaming, not me, but she says it works great and makes real microfoam.

Has anybody seen the show Dangerous Grounds on the Travel Channel? A bit over the top reality TV-ish but still kind of interesting to me.

Oil slick where? On the beans? On top of your brewed coffee?

I have the exact same one, and I've been using the **** out of it for years. That carafe is great, the coffee stays hot for a long-ass time.

During the day, after I pour in the water, I fill the carafe with hot water and let it sit for a couple of minutes. The reservoir in the coffee maker will hold at least 6 (of 10) cups so there's no rush to get it under the spout. Keeps it hot even longer.

Oil on the bean can be either a function of age or roast level (darker bringing out more oils on the surface). Oil on the surface of drip or espresso is normal; paper filters remove it. Some people prefer the 'cleaner' taste of paper filters.

I want to buy something to make coffee on the weekends, just for myself, sometimes two people. Should I just get an Aeropress and a hand grinder? Would I be able to make an espresso with a hand grinder (even if not perfect)?

I just bought the Hario Slim Mini Mill, and it does espresso grind quite well.

Personally, I prefer the Clever over the Aeropress, unless you want to make faux latte's, in which case the stronger brew of the Aeropress is idea. |
