Default Broken crankshaft pulley bolt

Hi all

I've got 1993 Imreza with 133k on it and it runs great and all, everything works just fine.

Now, this Friday when I left my driveway I heard 'bang' and my wheel stopped turning and saw the batery light came on. I got out of the car and to my dismay found a crankshaft pulley and seared in the middle bolt that was holding it. The other half was still inside the crankshaft!

Sure thing, I desided to look closely and this weekend removed radiator and A/C (well not really removed A/C, just pulled it up so it's not obstracting the view).

Here is what I saw. The crankshaft sprocket is chipped (but it's OK, I can get a new one I quess) and wodruff key that seats at the end of the crankshaft is broken as well, and, most importantly, peice of the crankshaft is chipped at the end.

My question is (actually two):

- is it worth it to try to extract the broken part of the bolt, given the fact that it may be really really hard based on prev post in this forums even with the whole bolt.

- also, if the first question is positive, i.e. it's worth it, how safe is it to still use the crankshaft that has a small piece of it broken off (in the spot where the woodruff key fits in). I mean I'm not up to changing the crank :-)

Any help from you guys will be greatly appriciated.
Alen

Default broken bolt

the same thing happened to the car i just bought, the crankshaft bolt didn't break but it wasn't tight enough and the pulley sheared the key off and damaged the timing gear. I just pried the gear off with a chisel and used a hammer and screwdriver to remove the broken key now all i have to do is replace the main seal and put in a new key and i hope everything will be ok. hope this helps you. damon
