Default Axle Replacement Advice

My right front axle is rattling. I guess the heat form the downpipe finally got to the boot and it is now time to replace.

Any suggestions on aftermarket? New axles are something like $400 vs $80 for aftermarket.

Any luck with any particular brand?

Car is a 2002 WRX wagon with a 2.5 hybrid and STi 5 speed.

Thanks,
Greg

Thanks for the help. The only reason I asked was because I saw a thread somewhere (can't recall where...) that said the aftermarket axles weren't as strong.

someone local said they had been using AutoZone axles with their lifetime warranty. They are 0/2 right one, one failed within 50 miles, the other one had 200 miles on it before it started to make noise when turning.

The stock STi axles (dunno about wrx / rs axles) are actually very well designed - according to a post by DSS a while ago. The reason why new ones are so expensive is because they are very stout. Sure, $400 is a lot, but they seem to be expensive for a reason.

I haven't had any experience with the brands on Rock Auto but have you called DSS and asked to see if they can sell you an OEM equivalent for less?

I had 300 whp on my 02 wrx and didn't have an issue with the Cardone Axles. I believe the one I got was $100.

Another shout out for Cardone axles.
Personally I would choose the new option versus rebuilt Cardone.
I think the return shipping on the core makes it a better option to go new.
I've used quite a few on different cars and never has an issue.

Cardone (napa sells them) new have a lifetime warranty but the remans only have 3 years. Remans don't cover torn boots either I believe... Don't quote me on that.

I got a torn boot in like the first 4 months with mine. Called RockAuto, they shipped me a new axle. I replaced it and then didn't have issues for years.
I can't remember if it was a reman or a new axle though. It's been to long ago.

I got an EMPI axel from rock auto for around 100, it seems to be holding up fine. It probably has 20k miles on it now.

I put on an EMPI from RockAuto a few thousand miles ago (for like 70 bucks or close to it) and it looks to be running fine. I actually just picked up another for the other side that I need to install now.

I figured I'd post here rather than starting a new thread. The Cardone axles listed on RockAuto are only 45 bucks. That seems a little too good to be true. I know they're not OEM but is this legit? Just wanna make sure I'm buying the right ones before I pull the trigger on this.

Third part down on the list. Part number 667281
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,ca...,parttype,2288

Thanks.

I did some searching here and the EMPI units were reccomended by a few. I don't know if they are any better or worse than the ones you found. But given they are cheap enough and have confirmed fitment, I might spend the extra fiddy on them.

Okay thanks for the advice bro. Those really aren't much more expensive and if you are speaking from experience on their quality, I might go for them then. Thanks again.
