Fear no Ice, I'm a bad mama jama
So yesterday I woke up to see all the Snow/Ice that came down. It was about 7am so when I stepped out it was solid ice (about 4or so inches) so that meant back to bed, no work. Around 11, I heard all my neighbors shoveling their driveways and I said to myself, HA, I drive an STI no need for that. So to show off I get in my car (after warming it up) and decide to plow through the snow/ice and go for a nice drive. All my neighbors (with their BMWs, Benzs, and whatever else are looking at me with evil eyes). Inside I am thinking hahahaha keep working on that snow, you won't see me doing that. I come back and forth a few times and had no problem getting into my garage (small incline)...... until 6pm. Hmmm why didn't I think about the fact that slush/snow, plus freexing temperatures equals ICE, very very bad ICE. So I go outside thinking I am going for more donuts in my neighborhood, when I almost bust my butt walking out my door. So I decide to jump up and down with all of my 145 pounds of rock solid muscle (keep laughing) and nothing, not even a dent. SO I had to call my co worker to pick me up this morning because there is no way I would be able to drive down my driveway.
So tonight, I had no choice but to try to shovel the ice because tomorrow I have an appointment to fix the dent on my car. I tried everything but the ice would not budge. So my friend tells me "Damn it Al, you have a freaking STI and you brag about it all the time, just drive through this ice" I say ummmm nothing is good on ice. He says, well drive down, and then I will help push you back up backwards so that tomorrow you can just go straight down front first. So I went down (very easy) and then going back up in reverse I was very nervous, but my STI did not let me down. I jacked up the heat, turned on the seat warmers and put my girl in reverse and said "ice, I will rule you today"... my STI turned into a bad mama jama tank and plowed through that ice like it was its job, right up into the garage were it knew it would sleep nice and warm tonight. As I got out of my car, my friend says " Holy **** man, I honestly thought you would of had to park your car on the street cause there was no way you could get up your driveway in pure ice" I just looked at him and said.. "please, I drive a subaru". |

i pretty much did the same thing with my wrx but i have no incline on the driveway, but my neighbors were shoveling and even getting their fwd cars stuck all i can do is laugh cause i started doing dounuts in 4-5inches of snow , they just looked at me like i was crazy while they kept on shoveling.
i wouldnt be surprised if some of my neighbors got subarus after this winter. i hope they learn. lucky for them my good friend and neighbor has a huge 07 diesel with a plow and plowed out cul-de-sac |

I've been running full lock the last few days and it's just awesome when stopping in crappy slush/etc.
Helps keeping the car pointed straight in the ice too. -- Dave |

I fear ice. Specifically, my front left suspension / wheel fears ice
This storm, however? Oh, I conquered it. I conquered it good. |

Heck yeah, the damn ice at the bottom of everyone's driveways is killer!
My neighbor has been buring wood in a metal pale and sticking it in the ice to try to melt it..... It ain't doing much though |

Pour anti-freeze on it! Two birds w/ one stone... get rid of your ice, AND relieve the local stray cat problem
... I'm kidding, of course. |

There's only one thing that works on ice... usually.
Studs on your tires. (These are a Nokian Hakkapeliitta 2 and 4, respectively.) But around here, where 95***37; of the time you don't even need a winter tire, something like a Nokian WR would probably be better. I had a Hakka. 1 set for 4-5 winters, they were great when I was in NH. Moved here, got the RSi instead. Should've gone with a WR. Sure the RSi was nice the other day, but the temp is supposed to go up again, soon. So I'd personally rather have something more all-season-ish, I guess. |

^ I'll definitely get a set of those on a set of cheap wheels when I move to Arizona for winter trips to Flagstaff, etc. Could make for some fuuun driving

I'm sure they're great for what they do, but I've read an awful lot of reviews/accounts by regional members, who have said that braking, with studded tires, is really scary on no-ice roads. Like dry-weather braking.
And unless you have fourteen sets of wheels/tires, a lift and a pneumatic air gun, and want to change tires depending on the day, life's too short. If I lived in Alaska, I'd have them. Or Oswego County, NY. |
