Default Jiffy Lube says '04 WRX needs special oil filter?? Say what??

My girlfriend took her brand new 2004 WRX to a Jiffy Lube-type place for the 1000-mile oil filter change and was told that the 04 WRX needs a special oil filter??!! I know the body is different and all but isn't it the same 2.0L engine as the bugeye models? I did a search under Oil Filter here but found nothing on this....any input? Is the guy at Jiffy on crack?

Thanks,

Mako

And Please, Please don't take the car back to Jiffy Lube, ever. Way too many horror stories about bad things happening to cars serviced there. Either do it yourself, it's easy, or take it to a dealer or local shop you trust.

"the 1000-mile oil filter change"???

I got my first oil and oil filter change at about 3000 miles. Why not take the car to the dealership to get it changed? It should be about the same price.

Remember to check the blinker fluid while you're at it.

reciting what a Subaru parts-guy told me:

They revised the oil-filter when the '04's came out (or very nearly at the same time), but that's not to say that it is "04-Specific"... merely that a new filter supercedes the old one (from Subaru, that is... no idea about after-market filters).

The new one from Subaru has a different part number (15208aa080) than the previous one, and it's slightly smaller in diameter... ostensibly to avoid getting heat-soaked by the exhaust and so on that runs nearby it.

However, if you have an old one that you never used, it should fit your '04 no problem. They did not change the threads or do anything that makes new vs. old incompatible as far as installation on your car goes.

If you get your oil filter at Subaru, they don't even ask "what year", they just bring you the new part (presuming you live in a town where the dealer keeps up with such things )

FWIW: my '04 WRX Sedan came with the old, fat filter on it. That's how I found all this out, when I went to get the new one, it was smaller.. then I got the explanation that I just gave above from the parts-counter guy.

Don't forget to get a new crush gasket.. the counter-guy doesn't always ask... it's only like $1 anyway.

AGREED!

98 Ford probe GT V6 + Jiff Lube = dead

99 Toyota Corolla + Jiff Lube = Spun bearing (oil starvation) traded......probably long dead.

Both cars lost all the oil from loose drain plug on one and loose oil filter on other.

Please don't make us cringe by taking it to Jiffy Lube. Dudes working there making $6/hr touching your car=big no-no. My 2 cents...

Since your doing that might as well replace the muffler bearing.

Most likely. And, yes, please do not take your car to Jiffy Lube for any reason unless you want the full service: change air in tires, inspect/replace the fetzer valve, check brake couplings etc. And don't forget to fill up with the green boost fluid, not the red that GM cars use.

There are probably local guys that are willing to help you with the oil change if you're not willing to take it to the dealership. I routinely change oil for two of my neighbors and several people at work.

I have an idea! I want to make a how to change your oil video

Step by step with what tools you need where to get them how much they cost proper jack points on the car where to place jack stands
I have started using Adobe premiere and I could do this.

My only concern would be the overall file size of the video.

Maybe I could split it up into two video files.

What do you guys think? I'm serious I'm not talking about changing blinker fluid and Jiffy lube.

I have read horror stories on here anything from some ones oil pouring out in a parking lot to smashed in oil pan from a jack.
This would be a big job and would be nice if it was put in a place where everybody could see it and find it easily

A new WRX at Jiffy lube? I hope they didn't take it out for a "road test" afterwards...

Funny. I walked in to a Subaru dealer I happened to be driving by & said, "I need an oil filter for an 04 WRX" The parts guy started hunting & pecking on the keyboard, and after about a minute, asked me "Is that the 4-cyl or the V-6?" This still bothers me months later.

Needless to say, I'm not ever going there again...

at first i thought about the 6 cylinder legacy, but it's an H6 not a V6. subaru has never had a V6. ever! i hate people who are incompetent at their jobs. come on. these people work with subarus every day, and every EJ20 motor uses that size filter. but what am i thinking? most subaru parts guys have no idea what an EJ20 is.

yeah, never go to jiffy lube. you'd think they do a good job because they change oil all day, but no. they suck. you'd be better going to wal-mart, seriously. you don't need a special oil filter. if you get a purolator filter, it's ALMOST the same as the OEM filter. but to be honest, fram or any filter works fine. easy street uses fram filters and they're running 9 second quarter miles in their wrx. so it's probably not going to be an issue.

You can hardly compare the loads that the easy street car experiences to what a normal street car sees. They'll kill that bottom end long before they will get any wear and tear from poor oil filtering... so at that point, the cheapest filter will do.

Purolator does make excellent filters, though, I'll agree with that.

The only thing that is wrong about this thread is people bashing this guy for changing out the factory oil at 1000mi. Many of us did our first oil change this early. There is nothing wrong with an early oil change after the initial break in.

And an FYI,
That new smaller oil filter is what they are using on all EJ series engines, not just the EJ20. I picked one up the other day and got the new 080 part number vs the 060 fatty filter...

Great idea, or at least easy directions with pics. I am one of the many too scared to change my own oil.

ok oil change write up

1. remove drain plug, drain oil
2. remove oil filter
3. install new oil filter, lubercate new gasket with fresh oil
4. install drain plug w/ new crush washer
5. fill to proper levels

this all can be combined into one step

1. change oil

maybe cky211 will do a write up with pics....its mind numbingly easy....i cant even think of a way to mess it up...unless u strip the drain plug back in?....but if you cant insert a bolt into a lubercated hole then you should probably take it somewhere anyway....

smashing in oil pans?...wow i'd love to be there to smack that guy after he did that and say "now what did you learn?"

You don't even have to jack up the car to do it.

Oh yeah, torque value for the drain plug bolt is like 32.5 ft/lbs.

[or at least tight enough to just crush the crush washer. you did get a crush washer, right? Right?!?]

[old crush washer or no crush washer = leaking oil. and yes, i'm speaking from experience.]

[oh yeah, there's a write up with pics on www.scoobymods.com]

Remove the oil filler cap first, it will allow the oil to drain better/faster.

Yikes!... that's a pretty crummy dealership then. I agree, I'd avoid such a place. I guess I'm lucky that my parts-counter guy knows enough to know about the new stock filters offered by the company he ultimately works for (in addition to knowing what fits what on Subaru's in general).

Good thing you knew better and left... gives me the willies thinking about stuff like that going on to the average Joe who has no clue.
