The "I Want an iPad in my Subie" Thread
Before the mac flaming starts, consider the possibilities:
iTunes, GPS, 9.5" display (that orients vertically or horizontally), software that's touch oriented, the App Store, Accelerometer, web browsing. The big key to this will be "will the release OS allow multitasking?" We don't know. Additionally, how much freedom will we have with the dock? Can you connect cameras, external hard drives, other USB devices? What we do know is that it will be able to run any app that can run on the iPhone. We also know that future versions of those apps will have iPad optimized designs. So visualize this: The screen is divided top/bottom, with the top running GPS through software like Navigon ($60), and the bottom running iTunes. Through the docking station you input OBDII (USB) and run a secondary program that allows for customized digital gauges. Whatever the ECU knows, you can know. Boost, pressures, temps, whatever. Float those guys along the sides or top and have your glorious interface. Want a new song? No problem, you have the iTunes store right there. Videos? TV Shows? It's really great. -------------- Now, I run a nice setup in my car, but it had a price tag. Mac Mini 2.26 GHz ($800), 7" Lilliput 629NP ($230), USB GPS antenna ($90), Car-USB radio antenna ($180), Mounting brackets ($150), Power Adapter ($135), not to mention audio equipment. Total up all that system specific stuff and you're will into the $1500 range for the system, AND I DON'T EVEN HAVE INTERNET. Price point on the all-in-one iPad: 16GB: $630 32GB: $730 64GB: $830 (I'm including the 3G option as you need the GPS and want the internet. If you don't, then just subtract $130 from each) Relocate HVAC somewhere. Ditch center 2 vents (or just adapt the vents on the new bezel you'd make). Beautiful.

Why not just use an iPhone? The iPad is completely useless.

While it is really neat, I'm gonna wait for 2nd gen. Just think back to the major advances between 1st and 2nd generation iPhones...
And without multitasking it just doesn't seal the deal for me. With that said, I still kinda want one, lol. Patience is a virtue |

schweeet! another non multitasking touchscreen toy from apple! i dont think theyll fix the above problem with a second gen considering you still have to use email to recieve pictures with the iphone. why after 3 or 4 gens they couldnt come up with multimedia pix messages is beyond me. as for the iphad, my buddies and i are thinking its a huge joke/prank that apple has come up with until they have something better to present to us. insert crappy april fools joke here. its nifty but its just a giant iphone that cant make phone calls and has no usb ports for accesories.
C.S. ipad = expensive apple fail. |

On a side note, what do you mean about having to use email to receive pictures? |

Yeah a lot of people aren't really informed ITT. Or just seethe general apple hate. The "can't MMS" argument just makes you look ignorant from so many standpoints. I'm more interested in software version 2 than hardware version 2. It's been long rumored that iPhone 4.0 software (due out summerish?) will enable multitasking.
The beautiful thing is that the 3G chip is SOFTWARE ENABLED. How long until that gets hacked and any jailbroken iPad can get unlimited access? Or if it checks for ID before allowing you on the network, how long until we can tether our iPhone (already w/ the data plan) over BlueTooth and use its internet? Watching the keynote, my first thoughts were similar to many stated here. "No place for it." "Why wouldn't I just get a laptop?" "Why wouldn't I just use the iPhone?" The iPad isn't supposed to be a netbook. It isn't supposed to be a laptop. It isn't supposed to be an iPhone. Start thinking of it like a piece of paper. A digital, interactive, musical piece of paper. Hell, look at some "futuristic" movies and the iPad is a large step in that direction. And the cost is really, really great. Cannot stress that enough. Take a quick look into the carputer world (www.mp3car.com is a good place to start), and you'll see how much utility this provides for such a low price. If I can figure out where to relocate the HVAC controls, I'm doing this. |

I have heard that 4.0 will also support multitasking. As long as it's a setting that can be turned on and off I'm all for it. Personally I won't use it unless I'm working on a document and want to listen to music at the same time.
Flash support would be nice, but not a dealbreaker for me at all. I totally understand and even somewhat agree why Apple is anti-Flash, but until everyone switches to HTML 5 it is a needed evil for many people. Last edited by Daishi00; 02-01-2010 at 07:33 PM. |

Who needs HVAC controls? Ditch em. I definitely like your idea. Now we just need to make this musical paper voice controlled and it'll be perfect

My 3GS can play and control music while using Navigon GPS (8Gb of maps on the phone) and will still push email in the background and pause the music to answer calls. Granted, it will exit the App you are using during the phone call.. but immediately after hanging up it will resume the App where you left off. The way some people talk about it, they apparently think the iPhone can't do any two things at once. |

i tell ya though, i'd still love to be able to have my alarm app run in the background without having to have it open all the time. i've woken up to a few texts or calls more than once only to forget to reopen the app and then wonder why my alarm didn't wake me in the morning be nice to have skype with push and background enabled run mode as well also one password. fantastic app, but it's a pain to get your cc info when you're trying to buy something online if you have to close out of safari, reopen the app which requires password, etc etc |

Although the info hasn't been released to us apple licensees yet, the iPad has the 30 pin dock connector. This suggests that any radio that is made for iPod or works with iPhone should be able to get audio/video from the iPad and control the audio/video. But, the other apps will need their own sets of controls. But on the bright side, the USB may be able to charge and pass audio with no drama.

it definitely has potential for in car entertainment.
It would take considerable amount of work to get it to seamlessly work as your headunit though. Fitting it in the dash wouldn't be impossible. people have fit up to a 10 inch screen I believe with a little fiberglass work. Just having it control everything else would be the hard part. Now is the time for them to team up with one of the big aftermarket deck manufacturers (alpine, pioneer, or kenwood) and make a decent double din unit for a change. I'm still not impressed with any of their offerings on the market right now, and the features that the ipad have added to a solid unit would be an amazing headunit. On the otherhand, I wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of an overhead dock so you could use it for the kiddies in back. Heck we just got an overhead unit at work with a built in PS2. |

I am going with the optimism of the OP.
As soon as I saw the special announcement I sold my Kindle. I am definitely buying the 64GB non-3g version. My iPhone is already jailbroken and can multitask and tether (BT or USB) so I plan to use it's 3g connection for the iPad. Split screen would really open up the possibilities. Maybe someone will even write an app to take bluetooth data from Garmin's new EcoRoute ESP: http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/05/g...-car-sentinel/ |
