Unhappy I have a major problem

okay.. well i bought a 07 sti about 3 months ago. and i had a few bucks to put into the car. so i had bought a catback and a bov. instead of going somewhere profesional to have the parts installed i just had my buddy do it for my mostly because it was free and i trusted him...so i had the parts on for a few weeks and everything was running smoothly. but one day i heard sounds of a boost leak..i didnt pay any mind to it untill it started getting much louder.

i tried to figure out where the leak was just by looking but i couldnt find it...so the next day i was driving and by that point i had what felt lk 0psi. i basicly had an all engine sti..i finally got it up to the dealership after replacing all the stock parts..even though they seen that i had done work to it they decided to fix it anyways.

to make a long story short they found that the tubing from the intercooler that connects onto the turbo was folded in. that caused a blockage from the intercooler to the turbo which made the turbo become extremely hot and it actualy melted some of the tubing..luckily the turbo didnt blow. but from what they said everything from the turbo back was messed up. including the exhaust..

but my problem is that they had my car for 3 weeks and i got it back last thursday and it seemed to be fixed. then last sunday it started acting up again..i could feel the boost kicking in and out, i actualy threw a check engine light. so i took it back yesterday and i got it back today..they said that the wastegate had opened up but they took care of it and it was said to be fixed. but its deffinitly not.

my turbo used to kick in around 3 grand and now its not kicking in till bout 5. the boost is much less then what it should be when it does finaly kick in as well. i just dont know what to do. they are becoming clue less on what could be wrong.

does anyone know what could be going on here???
id apreciate all the help i can get right about now........

You need to have them check the uppipe to the turbo and make sure it is not clogged...I have seen a few at my dealership. We replace the up pipe and if done it time, does no damage to the turbo. Although, I have had to replace a few turbos.

All of this was on 07 Sti's. I was told the problem was from overboosting, which breaks up the stuff in the cat and it clogs the turbo, although I have not had that confirmed.

07 sti's don't have catted up pipes so can they still clog?

I would call up the service and explain to them that it is acting up again and tell them to take a look at it.

That will learn you to put a BOV on an STi. Do some research before shoving stuff on your 35k car next time. FYI, you got real lucky that they fixed your car. Usually if you do a normal mod like exhaust and tune, but you are honest about it, they won't care. You did the 'return to stock trick' which is usually a direct route to the shaft. Also, you put a BOV on. Double-negative, and they still fixed it. You better buy them some pizzas for lunch in the near future.

take a look at your wastegate. make sure its not stuck open you can try doing a pressure test to see if its opening properly. if the problems persists call subaru of america and ask them to replace it. Also the car may be in limp mode try resetting the ECU

Man, if that car is really in limp mode, resetting the ECU without knowing exactly what is triggering the car's built in self preservation mode is the LAST thing you want to do. Get it back to your service center, it seems you've lucked out and found the rare mod friendly dealer. DO NOT abuse your seemingly good relationship with them, at least they are covering things under warranty. Biting the hand that feeds you by accusing them of lying or being idiots will only cost you lots of money in the long run. Be firm with them and demand satisfaction, but do not let the relationship become abusive either way. You paid a lot of money for the car and deserve to have it working properly. You should not continue to throw aftermarket parts at this car until it is completely fixed, they have documentation that it is completely fixed, and you have done your due diligence on how to mod the 07 without killing it.

If i spent $35k on a car, i would at least get some EM before i bothered putting some mods on. I would've also taken it to a professional and had them install the parts. It's anyone's guess if your parts screwed up your car, but my suggestion like everyone elses, is to take it to the dealer and pay for your mistake. Tell them what you did to your car and maybe they'll have an answer for you. Good luck.

well neither of your mods could have caused any major problem, so whatever is going on, its not your fault.

You don't touch the upipe, turbo, ypipe or elbow or hardly anything to do either of those installs, unless your buddy took your car apart for fun when u weren't looking.

Exactly, all you guys bashing him need to chill. He added a catback and a BOV big deal. Yes the BOV isnt the best idea and can cause your car to run rich between shifts, but it is HIGHLY unlikely that it caused ANY of the issues he is having.

Not sure what could cause the rubber piping to fold and melt like that. Definitely make the dealership fix it until it is right.

Ahh with that BOV on with no tune, that could have added to the issue

As far as I know, you can't really tune for a BOV....

Definitely strange whatever happened and they they should fix it, especially since they seem really cool about you having changed anything to begin with.

there is no tuning for a BOV at least not on the factory ECU.

besides all it can really do is cause momentary rich condition and part throttle hesitation neither of which is serious, and alot of Subies have zero drivability issues with them, its hit or miss.

No matter what, I cannot possibly forsee that either of these mods could have contributed to these problems. They are very benign and harmless.

Because Rexy has actually helped me in the past with a question and I seem to think she's helped others on here. When dealer folks see issues in their shop, it can be great information for when a dealer is looking for a problem that's a bugger to diagnose. Anyway, I wasn't sure what your comment meant, but considering the help I got before, I'm thinking it was meant in a positive way, right?

Actually....it isn't a very positive comment.

Clogging the cat in the up-pipe on an STI? Not likely as it doesn't have one.

I was just stating what we've seen in our shop.

To be honest, I ignored, actually, read over, the fact he had an STi. On the most recent car I had in the shop, which was a WRX, we replaced the up pipe because it was clogged and also the turbo because it was damaged.

I still haven't gotten confirmation on what causes it....but i had one in the shop about 2 weeks ago, and 3 or 4 at the shop i used to work at. 2 of them were modified (one was returned to stock) and the other one was bone stock with only 2,000 miles on it. Do I have a solid explanation? No, and I didn't say I did. I just threw out there what I was told.

Oh, and all of them were covered under warranty.

You need to PM Uncle Scotty. He's the authority on the proper use of an aftermarket BOV.

OK, if your tune doesent help the BOV, why is it that people who have there car tuned have no issues with BOV, but the people who just throw one on to just get the noise are the ones posting threads about why there car is not running right

The reason for this is usually the people that have a need for a BOV have their car setup properly and deal with the rich spike between shifts. And there is no way to tune for a BOV period whether you are using factory ecu or aftermarket ecu. The only thing you can do is switch to speed density so blowing off the air does nothing to how the car meters how much air it is taking in.

People that throw it on for the sound are usually also the people who don't run any engine management for their mods and wonder why their car doesn't run right.

Hope this helps you understand.
