Chassis question - STi chassis different?
Is there anything structurally different on the STi other than cosmetic? Are there any factory mods, is it stiffer, heavier, lighter??? OR, are all the shells the same?

It's different. Rear wheel opennings are pre-rolled (the sheet metal lip isn't there). The U brace has additional bolt holes and body mounts. There's a brace that connects the control arm mount points to the subframe. Holes aren't even there on the WRX. The spec-c's have re-enforced strut towers in the front. I've read that they used more spot welds on the STI chassis too.
On the 08's there's supposed to be more high strength steel. I'd love to get an STI chasses I could stick my drivetrain in. Don't want drive by wire but, would love to have an STI chassis. |

As far as the '04-'07 STI- I know for sure they have an extra fender brace from the factory to improve chassis stiffness. |

04 STi does not have pre-rolled fenders.
02-07 WRX also has those fender braces, but the 07 STi got a beefier one than that POS stamped steel piece on the earlier cars. there's a couple of braces that are different. As far as I know the chassis is the same, everything that is different is just stuff that can be bolted on. |

I'm sorry you're confused speedy. Car body's aren't constructed from the same kind of steel throughout. Some parts are mild steel and some are made of "high strength steel" which is stronger for the same thickness but, more expensive.

This brace that ties the suspension together on two sides, that one can be bolted in? I thought the holes were missing on the WRX? The jack point brace, not that pretty red one. Last edited by MasterKwan; 12-26-2007 at 10:51 PM. |

For the record that's the much prettier stamped brace. The one on my 04 STi is just a plate welded to a tube with crushed ends. |

We talking about the B2 bomber looking jack point brace? If so I'm pretty sure my 05 WRX has that on it from the factory. I can try and take a look today or something to verify.

Yes that one. My 03 doesn't and there's no captive bolts to mount one. All I have is the mini-jack point plate.

It CAN be bolted in...but you'd have to bolt in the newer/STi crossmember too.

my 06 wrx also has that piece.
also, the sti never got that alu fender brace (cowl stay) that is just a opt piece from STI. the 06-07 did get a different cowl stay, but it still sucks. Shane |

I figured I'd have to swap the subframe. So basically it sounds like the later WRX and STI's got the upgraded subframe. Perhaps the same time they got the upgraded rack mounts? At least the WRX's are easier to come by (assuming I want to mess with it).

Well, maybe you should have looked it up before you posted! The benefit would be in crash tests, etc. Not necessarily chassis stiffness. |

Depends of course on what steel they are using, but most likely, it is of the same stiffness. |

I never said anything about stiffness. I said it was stronger. Stiffness of thin sheet metal parts in a unibody structure is controlled more by it's shape and how it's welded rather than absolute strength. High strength steels let you make a car lighter because you can use thinner sheet metal for the same strength or it lets you make the car stronger if you use the same thickness as the mild steel it's replacing.
Kind of pointless arguing about it. Clearly Subaru and other car companies think using more high strength steel in their performance flag-ship brings something to the performance party. I trust real engineers who actually build cars for something like this. I saw an interesting show about the "Fit" the other day (Best Motoring's VTEC Club). They specifically mentioned using different strength sheet metal in critical sections to improve chassis rigidity as well as 3d structures including a large cross sectional area in the sills to make the whole chassis stiffer. |

Speedy was talking about using it to increase STIFFNESS (as the OP had asked). You told him he was wrong. He wasn't wrong, again, he directed his post specifically at stiffness. Last edited by REX8; 01-01-2008 at 07:53 PM. |

Speedy's saying using high strength steel makes no sense.

You can read into his post whatever you want. It was a throwaway and he hasn't been back. I'm convinced that subaru uses the HS steel to improve the chassis stiffness but, I'm not an automotive engineer so, I'm not pretending to have all the answers here. The FIT uses HS steel to increase chassis rigidity, that I know. It doesn't seem far fetched to assume that subaru does too. http://www.autoblog.com/2007/10/24/t...wrx-sti-debut/ Quote:
