but seriously, you should hit on:

1. it will reduce time wasted on court proceedings.
2. it will reduce wasted resources.
3. with camera systems maintained by state and city officials the current reasoning that a front license plate helps easily identify cars is redundant.
Also appreciated, I've got the reasoning down but I was up until after 2 last night paper writing and then had to be up early for a test this morning, so writing anything longer than this post... just isn't happening right now lol

She asked the judge that if there were no plates on the car at all, how the officer was able to write the plate number on the ticket? The judge said it didn't matter that's what was written. The officer wasn't there to back up his mistake.

That's the one thing that sucks about any traffic citation...there's no way for you to PROVE anything and you're just basically taking it in the butt. Same thing for speeding. Basically if an LEO wants to give you a ticket they can, regardless if you were actually breaking any laws.

if your wife was actually at court the ticket should have been dismissed as a "failure to appear from the officer". Your wife probably only went to the first court date were you plead, contest, no contest or deferred. the Officer doesn't have to show up to that one. If your wife had pleaded contest she would have won the case since the ticket was miss-written.

I know this because i have had 7 tickets and i have only paid for 1. all the other tickets have been dismissed for different reason. i got one dismissed because the officer misspelled my name. I hope this info helps you in the future.

Apparently, the search function does not work on NASIOC. I started a thread on this same subject back in January. Either the search doesn't work or somebody is too lazy to search. I've been PREACHING the elimination of the front plate ever since I moved to Texas. I've been pleading with everyone to write/beg/plead with their state representative and state senator to get this done. So far, there are TWO bills filed. Sadly, they are both in the House. HB557 and HB657 are the same bill. Why can't legislators use the search function as well? What we need is a companion bill to be filed in the senate. That hasn't happened yet.

Sadly, it seems my state rep and state senator are more concerned about appeasing the Tea Party and sponsoring useless legislation that blocks the Feds from taking away our gun rights (let me know when the 2nd amendment has been repealed - I should be in my grave by then). I've contacted them through their book pages, and not even a response. Yet, the legislators who have authored these bills are of the same party as the state rep and state senator that represent me. My state rep is more concerned about going on tours, meeting CEOs and sports stars, and attending the "Day of Resistance" rally. He's authored one bill so far. It would exempt 100% disabled vets from paying Texas sales taxes.

I've went to the Facebook page of the legislators who created those two house bills and thanked them for authoring it.

By the way, if you are going to write to a legislator, the #1 issue that you need to address is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$! I cannot stress that enough. These people only understand that money talks. They don't care about camera systems and courts. It's all about the Benjamins.

You need to make sure they know that the state (and therefore taxpayers) can save $$. Keep registration fees the same, and eliminate the front plate. All of a sudden a 50% drop in manufacturing, supply, and other costs helps the state. That's what I usually bring up first. After that, I state the fact that all the states surrounding Texas (Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and New Mexico) all require a single plate, along w/ every state in the south. So, I try and make my argument about less government regulation. We're a very hypocritical state. The leaders claim to say we have less government regulation, but yet, they have a law that says EVERYONE in the car (back and front) must be buckled in. Yet, in New Hampshire, if you are 18 or older, you don't have to wear a seat belt, and won't be cited for not wearing one. Live free or die is their mantra.

The only group who really wants to keep the front plate, is law enforcement. Two reasons: it gives them an easy way for them to pull you over, and find other things to write you on, or see if there is an outstanding warrant on you. The other reason: it makes using LASER easier to tag you for speeding. That reflective piece of metal on your car is a nice target for them to aim at.

I doubt the bill will pass. As license plate readers become cheaper and are used by more law enforcement agencies, they will want the easiest possible way to scan that greatest amount of plates, which means plates on both the front and rear.

Also, although I think the front plate is hideous, I have always used it because not having one is giving the police an easy reason to stop you.

Also, on the current issue, a very long post on another forum by a lawyer said the writing is still there to ticket you for not having a front plate. This does, however, exclude "special" plates.

Well, right now, there is no companion bill in the state senate. The last day to file a bill is March 8. After that, we can kiss hb 557 and hb 657 good bye and wait for next time. I'm seriously considering registering my cars in Florida (at my brother's house). It would be one plate, cheaper auto insurance (he's in a rural area), and no need for inspections.

Same thing for Oklahoma. Coming from there and moving here a few years ago has been an interesting learning process.

Oklahoma - no inspection - no front plate -

Texas was interesting trying to get everything changed over for my Texas license... I couldn't get my license until I got my tag, couldn't get my tag until I got inspected, which I couldn't do until I got my license.. huh??

Then when the bastard at Huffines bolted the front plate on my car, I really was not a happy camper..

I know this thread is almost 6 months old but I just want to give a little update on the plate law. It'll be official Sept 1. Wife bought a Forester and receive her plates yesterday. Sewell Subaru didn't bother to put the front plate on because that date is just around the corner. With the law coming to affect the price will still be the same as getting two plates.

They will be alienating some customers, if they happen to get pulled over for no front plate. I was following the bill through the legislature and even contacted some legislators to try and get it passed. It had a hearing in a committee, and that is as far as it went. It died in committee. You better get the dealer to put the front license plate holder on there.

Looks like it'll be a penalty starting 9/1/13 according to this:

A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT
relating to the penalty for the operation of a vehicle without a
license plate.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
SECTION 1. Section 504.943, Transportation Code, is amended
by adding Subsection (e) to read as follows:
(e) An offense under this section is a misdemeanor
punishable by a fine not to exceed $200.
SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only
to an offense committed on or after the effective date of this Act.
An offense committed before the effective date of this Act is
covered by the law in effect on the date the offense was committed,
and the former law is continued in effect for that purpose. For
purposes of this section, an offense was committed before the
effective date of this Act if any element of the offense occurred
before that date.
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2013.
Now you'll get to pay up to $200 for the privilege of not running a front plate.

I already tried to help a number of you guys with this, there IS still a penalty for no front license plate. It's up to the local judge or not, if you fight the ticket, if he wants to enforce it or not.

At least subsection "d" is an option. Hopefully you get a decent judge.
Quote:
(d) A court may dismiss a charge brought under Subsection (a)(1) if the defendant:

(1) remedies the defect before the defendant's first court appearance; and

(2) pays an administrative fee not to exceed $10.

^ True. I've been using a front plate since I moved here. They don't have front tags where I come from, but I figure it's one less thing to potentially get hassled/fined for.

I ran my car through an auto wash and it pulled off the front plate. Stuck it in my seat pocket. Haven't had it on in 3? months. So, for the last few weeks I start counting the cars without the front plate. About 30% of the cars aren't running a front plate. Just from my house to TKD (13 miles) Counted 43 cars without a front plate.

Interestingly enough, they were mostly nicer cars or newer cars. All the old cars had the front plate, but almost every Mercedes, BMW, Vette, Camaro, Mustang, Lexus... Didn't have a front plate. Tons of cops... they don't care.
