Question Holy crap! Clutch switch -- how to replace?

Hi everyone. Quick background:

* My 2000 Outback Wagon Sport (aka studly Impreza) was having problems starting. Sometimes it wouldn't start at all, sometimes it would start up instantly.

* Replaced battery, cleaned terminals, no effect.

* I think I've isolated the problem to a bad neutral safety switch (that is, the switch mounted on the clutch pedal that enables you to start the car when the clutch is pressed). If I'm holding the key but the car isn't starting, I can get it to start by releasing and re-pressing the clutch, usually several times.

* ok, but here's the thing. HOW THE *$&! DO YOU GET THAT SWITCH OUT OF THERE? I can see it -- it's circled in the attached photo -- but I am utterly baffled as to how I'm supposed to get at it, jammed as it is way back up under the dash.

Anyone ever do this? Guidance gratefully appreciated.

There's a nut on both sides. To secure it, and adjust it.

A lot like this. It's a pain to get to, but it's doable if you're a contortionist.

Man, I just don't see any practical way to do that. I hate to send it to the shop and pay a fortune just to have a $20 switch swapped out. >:^(

If you're in the Fairbanks area, I'll swap it out for you.

JCharron -- Really?!?! I will totally take you up on that! So I'll order the part, and when it comes it, message you to set up a date/time!?

I will hold the flashlight and learn, like a 12-year-old kid!!
