I don't know...but I tried it and got denied. So I had to use my paper one to get served. This also happened to my boyfriend on his 21st (a Sunday) The bartender wouldn't serve him because his license was expired. I don't get it either!

You need to go to the RMV after your birthday. Be sure to do your hair and wear a nice skirt, because they need to take your picture.

Age and Date of Birth

*snip*

A customer who renews his/her Massachusetts license/ID card before his/her 21st birthday will receive a vertical Massachusetts license/ID card with the text “UNDER 21 UNTIL MM/DD/YYYY.” It does not matter if the Massachusetts license/ID card is manufactured after the customer turns 21; as long as the renewal is processed before the customer's birthday, he/she will receive an “Under 21” Massachusetts license/ID card. This Massachusetts license/ID card will be valid for five years. If a customer does not want to be issued an “Under 21” Massachusetts license/ID card, he/she must renew the Massachusetts license/ID card on or after his/her 21st birthday.
I bolded the important part. Do it the day after. I'm assuming you want to go out and drink legally on Sunday... going to be difficult in the very least.

Here's the wording:

License and Massachusetts ID Card Expiration and Renewal
A Massachusetts license/ID card expires every five years on the customer's birthday. A customer's first Massachusetts license/ID card will expire on his/her fourth birthday following the date of issue. A customer can renew his/her Massachusetts license/ ID card up to one year prior to the expiration date or up to four years after the expiration date.
Bolded the important part that was missed in previous citations. 1st license is (4) years/4th birthday after issue. Many here got their license shortly after their 16... so the 4th birthday is 21. If you got it when 17, that's 22 years old.

Hopefully this clears up the 5-year confusion. As far as V.D's girlfriend... really weird it was only 7 months... unless she moved from another state? Licenses in MA always expire on your B-Day.... so it's odd that it wasn't on her b-day for starters. (unless it was a lost license?)

I understand it's expired as a valid drivers license (its primary function), but it is still legitimate proof of DOB. Is an expired passport invalid for buying booze as well? That's nuts.

Unforunately, that's the truth.

Say you go to a bar and your driver's license is expired, they can refuse you alcohol. This happened to my friend just the other night, he accidently pulled out his old license. He had a new valid one also.

She went for her road test in January (when she was 20)

Her license expired on her 21st birthday in July.

I had no problem being served on my 21st birthday with my ID. Granted that was a few years ago. It really depends on where you go. Most bars will serve you on your 21st birthday with a legit ID even if it expires that day.
