So,

I have just bought my first Subie and I have spent my life on the forum. I looked up this and only see old posts about them. I would love some feedback as I start pulling and rebuilding tomorrow.

I see they have a head gasket kit for the 2.0 WRX with head bolts for $160 that's well over $100-$150 cheaper than OEM. What's the catch?

I have the same question of pistons and rings $150 really?? I don't want to throw away money and rebuild again later anyway, but I am going back to stock?

Any feedback??

My opinion is don't buy cheap unless there's enough good reviews to see that it's not a crap product.

Grats on the first subie! You'll love it! Post some build pics, those are always fun!

If you were asking about something like a turbo inlet, I would say go for it. But since you're talking engine internals, aka something very important, don't cheap out.

If you use anything but oem headgaskets, you will be doing them again within a year.

Search for some reviews about their products online, on this forum and other subaru forums to get a mix opinions about the product. OEM is still a better choice for reliability.

Congrats on the new Subie

I've bought about 30 gasket sets from Mizumo over the past few years, with 0 issues. Mostly EJ22 kits. I can't speak for anything forced induction, but their kits are good if you take your time and do it right. Eristic is another good brand, but their customer service is dog crap. Mizumo overnighted a timing belt to me when they sent the wrong brand with my kit, and didn't ask me to send the other one back.

What I would do in your situation, would be to contact Mizumo and request the MLS (Multi Layer Steel) head gaskets; if they're not already in the kit.

NPR is actually an OEM supplier for rings. I've used several sets of them as well.

Sorry, I am not sure I understand. Spend more and not use NPR or spend a little more and use NPR. Are the parts cheap or the Toyota's. Sorry, English double meaning for me. please clarify. At the end of the day, happy with NPR or not?

spend more and replace pistons even though 99% pistons are good but new ones are so inexpensive that its good to replace those

NPR is very good, never ever issues

I might put cheap pistons in an old cheap toyota truck or something.

In a turbocharged vehicle different story however. Weisco's are a good brand and can be had for well under $500 for a set. If your going back to stock and looking for longevity however I'd go with OEM for engine internals.

Hi, I have a question for you.

When you install Mizumo MLS gaskets, do you use silicone/sealant on them?

Just got my failed MIZUMO head gaskets off... they failed miserably, very miserably.

I really wanted it to not be them that failed, but they did.

I have pictures to show how badly they failed.

The auto tech that did my GH only uses TOMEI, another very reliable brand if you don't want to go OEM is COSWORTH

I could have bought the Tomei kit for $300, but I opted for the Mizumo for $150 (shipping inc.).

I could have saved myself $700 and the aggravation of an over heating car, if I had just gone with my tech's kit. on top of the $850, I bought a new Thermostat $40, radiator cap $12, had it tested to see why it was over heating $40, and endless amount of coolant $60, and the endless pulling over to let the car cool... the highway was my favorite spot to pull over and wait for the car to cool down, to avoid redlining it.

Thank you MIZUMO, you added excitement to my summer driving experience!

I have to thank my tech for giving me a deal of $850 to redo the job.

Stay away from the MIZUMO MLS head gasket kit!!

No, and after reading your posting, I hope your "tech" doesn't either. Adding any sealant will throw off the tolerances of the sealing surface (Assuming the heads and block were decked properly to begin with, and guarantee a leak.

I get that your balls are chafed, but your mechanic probably screwed up. And when your $300 hgs fail again, I hope you see where the problem lies.

I hate to necro bump a thread, especially one that's a year old, but I was searching to see if anyone had used a Mizumo oil pump. They've got 12mm oil pumps for $75.00.

I've used probably around 50 Mizumo head gasket sets for EJ251/EJ253 engines, never had a problem. I've used three EJ257 head sets and they all went by smoothly as well.

Used their water pumps, head gasket sets, timing component kits, and all have worked well. I don't use their timing belts or DOHC valve cover gaskets due to a few problems I've had, so when I buy EJ255/257/25D head gasket sets & timing component kits, I discard the included timing belt & valve cover gaskets and get gates belts & dealer gaskets.

These 12mm oil pumps I've never seen before, does anyone have experience with them? Anyone know what brand they are? $74.95 w/free shipping sounds like a killer deal, but I just want to find some reviews before putting this on a car.

And the reason I decided to necro bump this thread is because of this single post. You can see there in the picture where the mechanic screwed up. On the gasket in the right of the second pic, look at the center head bolt hole, the gasket was pinched before it was torqued down. That type of damage doesn't occur upon removal and it's not going to happen with the car running. The only way that happens is upon installation. When you look at the first picture, the head gasket failed right there in the middle where you had combustion gases passing into the water jacket.

I've seen this happen a lot, it usually occurs when people change the gaskets with the engine still in the car. The gasket falls off the dowels (I've even seen people hang the gaskets on the head bolts instead of the dowels) and either the center or one of the bottom three head bolts pinches the gasket.

Edit: Looking at it again, it appears he pinched both the gaskets, so I doubt it would've been long before the second gasket blew out in the same place.

Not only that, but the right side gasket was pinched twice; once in the middle and the other pinch came from a dowel pin which is where you see an oval shaped head bolt hole.
