Cracked valve retainer? Was the car ever accidentally mechanically over-revved on a down shift?

ive been a auto tech for 12 years and left the dealership to work for the govt because of dealing with these stories like you guys already mentioned. i also got tired of customers thinking they were experts and knew more about cars than the techs.

this thread is win, keep them coming.

Anytime I have an issue with a car and I don't fix it myself, I always just talk to the service techs and tell them what is happening and my theory on what is wrong with the car. Then I listen to what they have to say and usually go with any extra recommendations they want to do unless it's something I know I can just do myself. I try to keep a good report with the service techs, as it's their job to know what's going on, and how to diagnose/fix the problem.

And the customer is always right??

What do you even say to a customer who walks in with an issue like that?

I know the car can be fixed at some ungodly cost, but stupidity?

You know damn well its bound to happen again.

Edit: I guess what I'm asking is;
Is there a polite way to say " your a ****ing idiot" to your customer?

You just have to try and explain how dangerous it is and when a car starts making a noise outside of the norm you should get it checked. Also that people need to watch gauges and if lights come on it means something lol.

The melted dipstick engine was toast and the lady had it towed to another shop because she thought that we were trying to rip her off I guess. It's a common part of being in the industry people always think your trying to screw them because they don't think cars are that expensive to fix. Just wait till the Buick hybrid alternators start failing and it will be 1+ grand just for the alternator part plus the instal.

^^ easy, treat them as they were your friend.

Buy them lunch, buy their kids something silly at wally world. Buy them a case of beer. ll that is 10 dollars or less, They fix up your car like its their own. You pay the labour and parts.

You gain a friend, and someone you can trust.

easy as changing oil or making peach cobbler.

Also, communication goes both ways, not jus flapping your lips, but you have to attentively listen. You have 1 mouth and 2 ears for a reason.

And you have beefcurtains for... well you know why. Haha.

But that's good advice. Just shut your damn trap and listen. I wish more people could comprehend that.
