There are only a few test days allowed per year, do you really think that she could help making this car better?

It was a publicity stunt that went wrong, **** happens
FYI sparky, this was a straightline aero test. Drive down a runway, turn around, drive back. Repeat that for a couple hours with assorted aero measuring devices attached to the car. She wasn't there to help them set it up better. She was there to drive it in a straight line.

And IMO, she had plenty of experience for that test. Several years of Spanish F3 and some WTCC under her belt.

in 2011 she was replaced after she made one race in the superleague formula
in 2010 she participated at nine races, best result was a fourth place
in 2009 she participated at nine races at the superleague and three races at the formula palmer audi

now, letīs take a look at the other teams and their test driver

Red Bull Racing: Sebastien Buemi
McLaren: Oliver Turvey, Gary Paffet
Lotus: Jerome DīAmbrosio
Force India: Jules Bianchi
Sauber: Esteban Gutierrez
Williams: Valtteri Bottas
Caterham: Giedo van der Garde

search for them, everyone is a winner in minor race series, or a champion, everyone is a professional driver.

I canīt say the same about Maria de Villota

Are you saying that she is only driving an F1 car because she is a (decent looking...or was) woman and that attracts extra money or press attention?

I fully expect her to recover from this and carry the mantle of all the previously successful women in F1 that have spanned history

a woman did finish in a points-paying position in an F1 race, it just wasn't a lot of points.

Marussia test driver Maria de Villota has lost her right eye and remains in critical but stable condition following her crash on Tuesday.

Marussia said a surgical team at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge "embarked on a lengthy procedure to address the serious head and facial injuries sustained" in the accident.

The team said the operation began yesterday afternoon and she was in theatre until this morning.

Team boss John Booth said de Villota has lost her right eye as a consequence of the accident.

"We are grateful for the medical attention that Maria has been receiving and her family would like to thank the Neurological and Plastics surgical teams," said Booth in a statement.

"However it is with great sadness that I must report that, due to the injuries she sustained, Maria has lost her right eye.

"Maria's care and the well-being of her family remain our priority at this time. Her family are at the hospital and we are doing everything possible to support them.

"We ask for everyone's patience and understanding with regard to updates on Maria's condition. We will provide further information when it is appropriate to do so and with consideration for her family.

"In the meantime, we would all like to take this opportunity to praise the emergency services at Duxford Airfield, who were on stand-by yesterday, as is usual procedure for a Formula One test.

"With regard to the accident, we have embarked on a very comprehensive analysis of what happened and this work continues for the moment.

"Finally, we have been overwhelmed by messages of support for Maria, her family and the Team and we would like to express our sincere gratitude for those."
This is horrible.

The Lotus team has joined forces with The Dark Knight Rises for the upcoming British Grand Prix.

The deal means the team's cars, as well as its garage, driver helmets and overalls, will feature the film's iconic logo throughout the Silverstone event this weekend.

Lotus said the movie's Tumbler vehicle will also be on display during the British Grand Prix.

"This season we have been the dark horses in the championship fight, so this partnership with The Dark Knight Rises is a fantastic match," said team boss Eric Boullier.

"Our car, the E20, looks superb with the Batman branding and we are looking forward to seeing the reaction of our numerous fans when it takes to the Silverstone circuit this weekend.

"We are certainly hoping for an epic conclusion for The Dark Knight Rises E20 in the grand prix."
I am totally getting pics!

that idiots made a bad decision to let this girl drive a F1 car, and if the rumors are true, she lost more than her right eye

So it has to do with her lady parts? Or that she didn't win lower class races?

So if the same thing happened to say a Conor Daly (tested the FIF1 in a similar straight line test a few weeks ago) it would be a tragedy but because it's a woman with a CV that you don't approve of it's their fault?

I am truly disturbed by this line of posts if I am following correctly.

High res photo or Maria's accident:
http://twitpic.com/a3duh9/full

Sources are blaming the anti-stall device, which kicked in when she slowed to enter the makeshift pits. Pretty sad.

Who the heck leaves the tailgate down?

Holy crap. She's lucky she didn't get decapitated!

Nice Micky Mouse operation you've got going on there, Marussia.

Apparently it's abundantly common to leave the tailgate at that level to allow easy access to the trailer, using it as a step. It was also nowhere near the actual testing area. As for everyone wondering "How could they have the trailer so close!?", well when an F1 car takes off unexpectedly, placing the blame on the object it eventually runs into is a little silly. "Who put the pit wall in front of the teams garages!? Engineers sit there!" I wouldnt be surprised to see it change in the future because of this, but everyone's acting like Nostradamus.

The fact that this happened to a woman doing her first F1 test is egregiously skewing the armchair experts' opinions. We will see when the report comes out what caused it, whether it was operator error or a mechanical failure, but the bottom line is if it was Timo at the wheel, a lot of you idiots would be singing a different tune (I'm looking at you torquederp).

Yeah, that seems to be the preliminary cause. The good thing about this is they have all the data in the world to confirm exactly what happened.

As soon as I heard about this accident, I knew the ignorant bigots wouldn't disappoint. She was more than capable of piloting that car in this test, and her experience behind the wheel of an R29 Renault last year is evidence of that.

I can't help but feel terrible for her and her family.

cold carbon brakes wouldn't stop the car. can't wait to see what the telemetry reveals.

Also, they haven't had foot clutches for a while, correct? So "pulling" in the clutch might not be the most intuitive movement.

forgot about that point. even then there is something Massa (spring to the face) like in her ability to respond to the way the car lurched.

I meant brake, not clutch. I assume that most if not all F1 drivers left foot brake.
