Default DAM inquiry

So ive been on Stage 2 ECBS OTS map for about 2 weeks and everything has been great . There have been small instance of FKLC and Feedback but nothing out of the ordinary. Today my DAM dropped to 9 and I feel like I can almost peg it to going up a decent hill in 5th and being on the throttle. Does this make any sense? How long would I drove another 30 mins and it remained at 9. I reflash the map later on and it's been to 16, but now blipped to 15 even after like 40 more miles. How long does it take for DAM to restablish itself at 16. Car is running fine and all my readings on AP look fine. Should I just be continuing to drive and let it get there?

this is a good article about DAM and how knock can change DAM values: http://www.cobbtuning.com/subaru-kno...logic-changes/

if conditions are good, the car will learn appropriately and go back to 16. It is possible you have filled up with a bad tank of gas, which can cause knock/lower DAM.

Also, make sure the mods on your car match EXACTLY the map notes. if even one small item is out of place, you'll need a different map or a protune if no OTS map exists.

this is exactly whats happening to a friends car, except with a fresh pro tune. the car was mint for a few weeks until it started to get super hot out. DAM drops to 9 even after resets, really no knock occurring. I have to take a guess that its a combination of possibly bad gas and the heat, its been 90 degrees everyday for the past few weeks.

I'm in WI on 91oct. It's still pegged at 15 and was told that if it gets set to an odd number it won't go back to 16 on its own. I need to reflash. I'm positive it happened while being on the gas going up a hill in 5th when I should've shifted. It has been humid here but car is driving fine now at 15. I will be changing plugs and timing belt and getting a tune from Eric at Tp.

what would a reflash accomplish that a reset would not? nothing that i can tell. get a custom tune. do you not have access to 93 out there? if your DAM wants to drop, i would NOT keep resetting it to a higher number. your ecu is dropping it for a reason.

^ that bold section is incorrect. it will go back to 16, did you read the article I posted?

Yes I've read the article and it doesn't really mention the return to 16 for older models. At this point I'm still driving and it's still a 15. All my readings are fine as i have my AP displayed while driving. I've had nothing but -2.1 for knock and nothing +/-1.05 for fine knock. I've only reflashed that one time when it was at a 9 after accepting in 5th uphill. I would have thought this would have returned to 16 by now.

This was a log from the other day:

log looks good to me. i think you're worried about nothing. the learning is positive in that log, so you're on your way back to a higher dam unless something else happens. (someone please correct me if i'm wrong, i'm still learning here also!).

^ you are correct.

Here is another article from Cobb to clarify that the DAM does learn back up to max value if the car is running its best:

The key when analyzing data logs is to keep in mind that the knock detection systems on these cars is not overly sophisticated and can report knock events when no knock has occurred. This is fairly typical at lower load or with bigger throttle changes. Also, some occasional small corrections can be normal and do not necessarily indicate a problem. Some general things that I look for that may indicate that a car has a knock issue to be addressed (based on logging):

1. Feedback knock correction or Fine knock learning -4.2 or worse at low loads (i.e. cruise/low throttle situations).

2. Fine Knock Learning of -2.8 or worse during wide open throttle (WOT) run.

3. Fine Knock Learning of -1.4 if it consistently covers a large portion of the WOT run (indicating multiple cells involved)

4. Feedback Knock (-1.4) in the middle of your WOT run that is fairly consistent run to run, but does not start near when you mash the throttle. The first time it drops (ex. goes from 0 to -1.4) is when the knock event happened for feedback knock - the rest is it just ramping back to zero (unless it drops again).

5. Feedback Knock of -2.8 or worse at WOT if not due to mashing the throttle.

6. If your dynamic advance multiplier (DAM) drops from 1.0 (for 2.5L Subarus) or 16 (for 2.0L Subarus). Keep in mind that some maps start the DAM at a lower value when you reflash or reset the ECU and this is normal and not a cause for concern - will eventually learn up to its max if all is good.
