True, but the original debate was a full season of spec miata compared to one grand am race.

With that said, it is as easy as the following.Put together a car in a competitive class and win.

Win a lot.

Then put togethere a competitive car and team in a more difficult class and win, and win a lot.

Then, if you have won lots of competitive races and championships. Go out and find more money. Lots more. And put together a privateer race team in a meaningful series.

In the said meaningful series do well. Show you can win.

Now put together a program in a meaningful feeder series. After getting some experience. Win. Win a lot.

At somepoint if you really have the talent, and develop the networking and business sense you will find a ride. Talent won't get you very far in a career in motorsports. There as many true talents sitting at home or at desks doing day jobs as their are mediocore talents buying and financing their way into "careers" in racing.
Oh. If you haven't won anything by age 18. And really, won something competitive. You need to have huge sums of natural talent, ambition, and money.
Consider going to the UK and winning the Formula Ford championship. That would be a great start.

Rolex 24 hrs is boring... go get into the world of outlaws dirt series and get yourself a late-model... thats the fun racing... trust me

And look at what Tanner said in his post.

He learned the business. I know he has worked very hard to develop and refine his talents and to build a business savy and network.

Having worked with him I can tell you his is very sharp and works as hard or harder off the track as he does at the track. A lot of the success he enjoys now is from knowing and understanding the business of motorsport in combination with heaps of natural developed ability.

Motorsport sponsorship is a business decision. You have to master that or win the lottery. I know lots of mediocore local drivers that get to enjoy their hobby for free because they are willing to put in the time to make the deals and make the deals worth while to their supporters. They will take time from fixing their broken race car between races to talk with the passer by that stops for a minute to highlight just how valuable their sponsors products and support are. Being a race car driver is like being in sales.

You can save a lot of time and effort with real racing by instead focusing your efforts on E racing. Here's what you'll need for both a car and for your own preparation.

You need a new car. It has to be either an STI or an Evo and you have to only race in Time Attack events. No wheel to wheel because no one on the forums cares about that.

Your car will have to be equipped with at least a GT30 sized turbo. It should also have stickers in the spirit of Japan, flashy chrome stickers with brands of sponsors you don't actually have. The car must also have a Voltex wing, canards and a diffuser, whether it functions or not. It should also have one Japanese cartoon character sticker on it to be legal.

You may not use any real telemetry or data logging. You may not do wind tunnel testing but you can revert to the manufacturer's tagline on testing when challenged. You are prohibited from doing suspension tuning because you spent 3000 on Ohlins and they are just fine out of the box. For tires, the wider the better. You should have at least have the number 275 in the aspect ratio for Street class. Wider for unlimited.

The car should not be tested. Testing might damage the car and then the car won't be ready for photoshoots.

For yourself-

You need to be able to type fast. The internet moves fast and you need to keep up. What if someone calls you out because you were 2 seconds slower than they were in their street car around Lime Rock? Type fast and tell them that you have a Spec Miata and you hit 145 on the straight there, and that your current car is still in testing and running "low boost"

Follow further challenge with a confusing series of emoticons.

If you are racing and not performing well blame the car. It's the easiest thing to do. Blame something complicated like cross camber, or brake bias that way no one will be able to substantiate your excuse.

If you do race to your standards and end up on the podium, dress professionally. Clean up, remove your race suit and put on something classy, like a vintage T shirt from Hollister and a sideways trucker hat. Nothing says race car driver kid like a "I'm too cool to conform" look on the podium.

Good luck! See you sometime at the track.

Just to give some kind of idea what it's like...

A top driver currently driving for Stasis in Speed World Challenge paid over 300k for one year of racing. This is a good driver on a pro team, he still had to pay for a seat. Given sponsors probably paid for a lot of it.

Of course if that's too rich you can do the entire national season of Skip Barber for roughly 30-35K. But then you have one less excuse since all the cars are equal.

Not a chance. That was the stupidest move that Russel did getting a real expensive racecar to run in their series. They at a minimum tripled the cost of everything on that chassis. I'd bet good money there is going to be a big drop off in the number of people running that series for that very reason. Hopefully Barber doesn't go off and do the same stupid move. There have already been a couple that have jumped ship to Barber.

All that aside, the car is pretty darn cool.

Bimmubishi, that's a lot of ****in' effort for sarcasm. Get a life.

And in case you missed it, the guy has since said he's no longer interested in racing.

ITWRX- that kind of attitude will not get you on the podium. For SCCA you need to be much more uptight. I did miss it because I was really trying hard to convey the right attitude of being totally cool and nonchalant. Try again, this time really lambast me for something like race numbers that are the wrong size or whip out the classification book and demand that my computer be torn down for tech inspection.

A whole new company did buy the school, probably a pretty darn big company if they got all new cars. Not to mention new facilities. Either way, there going to be very fast. Stock evo motor in a light weight open wheel car.

I'm not denying they will be fun, but I fear that they are going to price themselves out of the market. It's more the fact that there are a number of young kids who have no concept of money that race in these series and can't comprehend that knocking off someone's rear wing is going to cost that person 2,000 bucks.

I'm not but they're all the same.

KC- I guess that you get off free this time because auto crossers are simply too familiar with racing rules and quite frankly the glamorous lifestyle that accompanies car racing to be criticized.
