Default 2012 2.0 trailer hitch?

I am looking for a hitch for my new 2012 Impreza Sport Premium 2.0 CVT hatchback. I did a search, and everything I found was either for a WRX/STI or someone modified something to fit. I apologize if it has been covered and I missed it.
I am also aware that towing is not recommended on the new 2.0. Just looking for a place for a receiver style bike rack

According to all the other threads on this, the Draw-Tite 24849 should be a fit for the 2012 Subaru Impreza Sport however please remember that your owner's manual says VERY SPECIFICALLY that the 2.0 Impreza should NOT be used for towing.

Hope this helps!

Area rep told me before I bought my Imp, that Subaru would not cover warranty if a hitch was installed. He didn't specify exactly what, and I didn't ask, and you can fight, but given the brand new engine and tranny, I decided it's easier to tow with our other car...

The XV can tow (according to the Canadian web site), and Aussie Imprezas can tow (according to the Australian web site), but North American Imprezas cannot? Anybody know why?

Most likely this is an 'Artifical Limitation' imposed by Subaru due to the rather new and untested tweaks in the Impreza CVT but that's just a guess. I doubt there is a reason why it can't, just that Subaru says YOU can not tow with it, not that the vehicle CAN'T tow.

I thought it was just the cvt that couldn't tow. manual can tow just fine iirc.

So I looked up the 24849 on the Draw-Tite site and it says it is for the WRX. I know that while both Imprezas, the 2012 WRX is a completely different car than my 2012 2.0 Sport. Pardon my scepticism, but does it actually fit without modification?

There are pictures on the forums here somewhere, sadly I'm at work and search isn't coming up with much on my iPad. If you do a search on the model number you'll no do but find the same thread with pictures that I pulled the original info from.

I believe the manual tells you to not tow on either the CVT or the 5-speed.

I have the Draw-Tite on my 2012 Impreza, made for the '08-'12 WRX. It does fit. There is a slight conflict of real estate with the muffler pipe; shorter exhaust hangers to tuck the muffler up towards the chassis solves the issue.

I have towed small loads (200-600lbs) easily, and was even seeing mid-32mpg with the CVT. Enjoy!

Greetings all, first post. I'm waiting for my 2012 5 dr to arrive and have been reading about hitches for this car. I only need it for my bike rack. Thanks to all on this forum for the pics and info. I spoke with Draw Tight today and they said that they are aware of the muffler clearance issue, but no news as of yet on a new hitch in production, suggested to call weekly.
So, for those of you that have installed the 24849, how much of an issue is it and what have you done to address the clearance issue?

Thanks , Dave

Anyone with a welding friend consider making one themselves?

I don't think it would be that hard actually, but since I can't weld, I can't say for sure.

I'd love to do dual exhaust on this car, but there will likely never be a dual exhaust capable hitch, and I'd like the receiver to be hidden by the cut-out in the bumper, so it will probably have to be custom made to fit with that kind of a set up.

Keep us updated as you find more. I'm looking to install one for a bike as well and would rather wait on one that fits without adjusting the muffler fit.

Curt Manufacturing has a hitch for the 2012. I haven't tried it myself yet.

IMPREZA 2012, What brand?

I was hoping the hitch would make use of the 2x2 (?) cutout that is just above it in the bumper.

So, if it doesn't use the port in the bumper... What is that port for?

I am looking at installing the Curt C11286 on my 2.0i Premium 5 Door for a platform bike rack, and I was really hoping it would be hidden behind this port. Do you have a picture of it from the side so we can see how far down it extends below the bumper?

Thank you for the pic above. That will help me explain it to my wife.

That's what I had installed by my dealer on my new Sport. I said I wanted it for using a bike carrier and they gave me no grief about it. It installs to the frame easily no replacing any bumper parts and it is tucked away nicely so it does not show much. That removable square in the center of the bumper is not for a hitch as some think but is for the European required lower Fog/Safety light. I just put a reflector there, looks fine
I'm happy with it as lifting mountain bikes to the roof is not something I can do without scratching the paint of the car.

thats fine and dandy but what if you diff goes out, or the transmission for some random reason. do you think that SOA ans the dealership wont try to blame you for towing something?

Well it's not likely there will be such a problem and if there is I had the dealer install it so I'm protected there and towing lighting was not installed so I can take the defendable position that there was no towing done just bike carrying. I'm more worried about the piston ring issue and oil consumption. I wouldn't have bought it if there were no bike carrier option.

Not sure why the US Impreza would be different to ours, mine has a Dealer fitted Genuine Subaru accessory Toe bar, I will only use it for a bike rack for my MTB but it seems an odd thing for them to say for a life style marketed vehicle, the Drivers manual contains the toeing restrictions wonder if those pages are absent from your manual ?

One negative worth considering is that the bottom of the bar scrapes too easily requiring care when entering and exiting driveways with even a mild dip or incline.

The brand here in Canada it's SRG. They use 4 bolts to fix it. I don't know if they have to drill it to be flush to my bumper.
