Anyone have experience with wheel bearings? My STI is nearing 70k and is loud as ****. I thought t might be the tires, but I switched from summers to winters and the noise is as loud as ever. I'm not convinced its the tires anyway. When I roll down my windows, the wheels aren't audible in the way I hear the noise in the cabin. Also, when I transition between pavement surface types, my tires make different noises, but the cabin noise is persistent.

The noise continues to get louder and peaks around 70-75 mph and then starts to get quieter at faster speeds. But that 70-75 mph resonates so loud, it makes your ear drums hurt.

I've read wheel bearing failures are pretty common, although I don't have any proof short of an educated guess.

Thoughts?

^^^ sounds like wheel bearings to me. i know these are a weak point on the WRXs but i thought the STIs were more resilient...

Quick test might be to drive down a side street with the windows down. Does the sound get louder when you pass cars (i.e. the sound is reflecting of the parked cars and back at you)?

At least that will tell you if the noise is coming from outside, and which side it's coming from.

with the weather cold, I've only rolled down my window a few times on the highway. the tire noise is different than the cabin noise for sure. I can't hear where the cabin noise is originating from, but it sounds like its from the front and center of the cabin.

Just jack up front or back real quick and check it. Grab either top and bottom or both sides and rock the wheel back and forth. Should just BARELY move. If it's loose and there's play, your bearings are shot.

Not a weak point on WRX's or STi's. They were on the old 2.5 RS's and some Legacy's. But it's a weak/wear part on any car and can happen any time really.

ive been reading thats a good method to check for completely shot bearings/hub issues, but that bearing issues arent always detectable in that manner. ill give it a go, however. if it rocks, ill know for sure.

None of my wheels show excessive heat and there's no play when I try to wiggle them with the car jacked up. I made a video of the noise. Not sure if it helps.

Does the noise change with the RPM's or with speed? Sorry but cant really tell in your video.

The most effective way to check wheel bearings is to jack up the car, put one hand on the spring and spin the wheel with the other, the bad bearing will resonate and cause the spring to vibrate. The old check for play method really doesnt work much on newer cars.

I replaced the right rear on my '02 WRX about a year and a half ago. With it being my DD and not having another car at the time, it was cheaper to buy the rear hub/spindle assy from someone that was parting their car out ($75). I swapped it in on a Saturday. The rust I had to battle made it take all day though.

I've tried the redline fluid, would advise going to Turn In Concepts and getting/using Motul.

What's up bro? It was good to see you the other night. Sorry if I was kinda out of it. I was on my way to work and had only been up a little while. Damn 3rd shift lol. Plus I was about 1/3 of the way through an 11 day workweek. Ill have worked more than 120 hours in 11 days by that point. I felt bad for not recognizing you sooner and if I seemed a little sketchy at first. When you walked up on me I thought you looked kinda pissed off so I was a little defensive at first I think. Anyway, good to see you.
