I don't think it's a VG on the 06/07 STi's. VG's are all about re-energizing the boundary layer. The roof aerodynamic device looks like it just redirects airflow. I could be wrong, though. I've never seen one in a wind tunnel.

You are absolutely right.

Mitsu's VG creates turbulence. Subie's Roof Vane redirects airflow precisely into upper plane of hte wing.

Sounds like that's as good a term for it as anything. That's why I just called it an aerodynamic device, I didn't know the actual word.

Yes, Mitsubishi's Vortex Generators are just that, they create vortices (aka turbulence).

Subaru's term is "Roof mounted Spoiler". Everybody just calles it a Roof Vane. Technically, its a wing, (since air flows between it an the body), but due to the direction of the force created, we try to avoid that term.

I was at MOROSO this past weekend with my kid bro and one of his friends. A lady friend of mine has an 06 5-speed impreza came too so i drove her car. After we watched the drift event we went to the dirt field to play around and i had the car drifting amazing (even though theres no LSD) After the 10 minute dirt cloud disappeared i slowly pull out of the dirt and some guy comes running up to the front of the car and said what the hell is wrong with you? I replied "nothing, whats wrong with you" He proceded to explain that what i did was really dangerous, especially at a racetrack. That what i drive isnt a racecar and i shouldnt be messing around in the dirt like that. I asked him what he drove and he pointed at the winnebago parked next to a tent and bbq setup. I let him know that he wished he could be me, and to get over the fact he doesnt have enough balls to go sliding with me. I actually got this guy in the car and went sliding in the dirt again. I made another believer!!!!

^^ I totally agree. People don't know everything about everything. Give em a break if they don't know much about your car.

"Does it need that wing and stuff?" - from a pretty skilled software engineer, who unfortunately would rather write a(nother) php backended, ruby-on-rails, useless web 2.0 widget tracking application that anything else in the world.

I was contemplating explaining the integral functions of all the bits and pieces he was questioning (the usual - scoop, roof vane, intercooler, rear diffuser), since he's an engineer of a sort, but then just smiled and said "Nope. Just for looks" He chuckled, maintained his smug countenace, and happily climbed into his Solara and drove off in blissful ignorance.
