Advice on motor swap
Hoping to get some help for a friend who is in Afghanistan right now. He bought a 1992 Legacy wagon AWD and decided to do a motor swap. He bought a JDM motor from a 1996 Legacy B4 I believe. It is the 2 stage twin turbo set up. Engine code is BG5 or EJ20H. He got the ECU, wiring harness, intercooler and tranny with it. His car currently has an auto tranny in it and the new tranny is manual. Does anyone know the gear ratio for this set-up? And will it just bolt right up and work with the current rear-end he has in his car? I told him I would try and see if the guru's here could guide me and help me with the info he needs to do this. Basically, I need to know (or he does) exactly what he will need to do/get to make this swap happen. Thanks for any help in advance.
Ryan

Is teh 92 Legacy wagon RHD? If it isn't he's going to have to convert to a single turbo setup. The twin won't fit LHD cars because of where the steering column is. The guys at Pacific Import Auto would be able to answere your questions better than I would. They've done a couple legacy swaps.

Thanks Erik, naw, his '92 is LHD. I was on legacycentral and just saw that exact statement. He is gonna be pissed. Oh well, if it don't fit, it don't fit. I will get a hold of Pacific Import and see exactly what he can do to make this happen. Thanks again.

No prob bob. I found a couple of twin clips when I was looking for a motor for my swap. It wouldn't be hard to convert to single. All he needs is a up/down pipe, exhaust manifold and turbo.

I've got a twin turbo motor at the shop... Was origionally the engine that was going to go in the 1990 Leg Wagon before we knew it wouldn't fit... We ended up finding a Ver2 Sti Clip for a good deal, so that went in it. Anyways, it would much better to see if he could get his money back for that package, and look around for a front clip from like a 1993-2001 WRX. I've seen those clips go for as low as 2,500. Ryan, You know how to get to the shop, don't you?

Ryan,
The early leggies had a tag on the rear diff with the ratio (3:90 or 4:11), most of them were 4:11s though. The main problem "your friend" (mine too) is going to have, is going from OBD1 to OBD2. That complicates the situation a bit. Also, as mentioned previously, the twin turbo interference issues. He's better off looking for a turbo leggy over there. Or better yet, one of those badass Toyota Hiluxes w/ a 50 cal in the bed.. Back on track here, an early Leggy turbo, WRX, or STI V1-4, that has OBD1 would be better if he was set on swapping.. ' I'm in the midst of the swap on the rally car, and the wiring aspect SUCKS..and that's in the same generation of car. Feel free to post, pm, or email me with any questions that you might have. Hope to see you at WW. |

Any Subaru before MY1997, Isn't considered OBD2 by the state, even though they have all of the OBD2 Equipment, they're still tailpipe tested. Therefore, you can swap any JDM WRX or STI engine, and not have to worry. I've heard the Version 7 and 8 engines will pass the plug in OBD2 test, but I haven't taken the shop car down and tried it out yet. The JDM engines will pass the Washington State tailpipe emissions test as long you use either a Stock WrX downpipe, or the stock JDM downpipe.
JDM Cars don't have the same emissions standards as we do (as most of you know), and as far as I know, they started using the OBD2 system in 2000 with the version 7 engine. The OBD2 aspect isn't a big deal, especially if you're doing a swap. It just requires swapping fuel tanks, and adding a few more wires. Like with my car, I have a 1995 legacy, which is technically OBD2, but it's missing half of the stuff that OBD2 system requires. They started adding that stuff in on the legacy's in 1998. I got a fuel tank from a 1999 legacy, and all of the emissions stuff was still attached, so all I had to do was bolt it in and run like 6 extra wires, and I had an official OBD2 compliant car. |

Barrett,
The car is here. He bought it before he left. And then he ordered a complete eng/tranny assy after he got over there. It's not Jody, but a guy in his squadron. I am helping Jody help him by trying to find out information for him. He isn't going to be happy that this motor as it sits will not work. So he should be able to use the block, anything else he can use off of it? I'm gonna let him know about all this tomorrow. Thanks again guys. Ryan |

If he could swap it out with a clip with a single turbo set up that'd be better. Or just convert it to single turbo. That will cost more though, due to needing a bigger turbo than the two dinks on there..

02 WRX Engine, VF34, STI Injectors, Perrin TBE, Perrin Inlet, K&N Typhoon... Also a bastard transmission, which I finally managed to break about 3 weeks ago. (1999 Legacy GT Gears, 1991 Turbo Legacy Transfer Case and Center Diff, and 2002 WRX Case). I swapped out transfer cases for a WRX Case so I could use my welded center diff, and so that I could also have the 1.1:1 transfer gears. I'm using a 3.7 Clutch Type LSD from a 1986 RX. With that 1.1:1 Center diff and the 3.7 Rear, that should put me somewhere around a 4.05 final drive (I was running 4.11 before I went RWD). After replacing 2nd gear and welding the center diff, I am RWD... First time driving it today. It's alot of fun to drive, but I don't get any traction in first gear after 5,000 if I'm in boost, and the same with second. I'll be at Wild West servicing for Erik's ( Roundthebend) car. We're the ones who built it (well most of it ), so you'll be able to see my Legacy at the rally if you're interested... Last edited by wrx_driver_2002; 09-03-2005 at 02:27 AM. |
