anyone know if the process is significantly different on a 2015 WITH the HK nav?

i ordered it with the car but am thinking i will probably get tired of it pretty fast. wanted the push start and something to start with; i'm not happy about the price but just din't want to mess with it.

in any case, i'd hoped that at some point a more or less plug and play option would exist which would allow me to remove the stock HU and install a pioneer or kenwood unit more or less plug and play and keep the steering wheel controls, stock mic, GPS antenna, etc...the easier and simpler the better. i haven't messed around with this sort of thing since the 90's so i know much has changed...since then i've driven cars with good built in nav, etc - so not as versed in what's possible nowadays.

TL;DR - anyone know how realistic it would be to remove the HK headunit and slide in an after market HU with some harnesses/adapters, etc and have all the buttons/features work, and not have to rewire anything? want to be able to return to stock when i sell the thing

I'm in the same boat as you, ordered a 15 with nav and keyless and will want to swap out the nav with aftermarket, especially once Pioneer updates their NEX models with CarPlay.

I was doing some research on it and if the 2015 nav units are the same as 14, they use a different harness than the non-nav units. I e-mailed svxdc and haven't heard back yet to see if he carries the required harnesses.

If not, assuming not much has changed, I'm thinking you can go to Crutchfield, put in that you have a 14 Crosstrek with factory nav, and get the required harnesses. Steering wheel controls I'm not so sure about. I might be willing to be the guinea pig after I get my car. But I'm not going to cut into factory wiring either.

I've also contacted svxdc but haven't heard back. In the mean time i'm going to prepare the harness myself and try install without his harness, i'll try document it and report back. There are a few things I won't be able to do yet though without some of his harnesses like redirecting the reverse camera to my new HU.

I just got my harness from david (svxdc) today and got almost everything soldered up and ready to go for my future 2015 base wrx. I'm just waiting for my parking brake bypass to come in and I'll be all set.

I haven't soldered since high school, but with svxdc's website it was pretty easy. Anything and everything is explained very well and he did a review over my setup before I bought his harness to make sure I got what I needed. I'd say that's why it takes maybe a day or two for him to respond. He was very knowledgable and helpful in the process, and I highly recommend going through him for your 20-pin harness.

As far as a complete plug and play, I agree it would be nice but I dont know how feasible. There are too many combinations out there. This website was the next best thing, since I am able to join all of the wires before I even need to remove my OEM head unit. Then when I finally go to install the new one, it will all be plug and play.

Another bump for a great reference site:

I haven't heard from David (svxdc) in two weeks so I have built my own harness as a temporary solution...its very dodgy but everything works!

Here is my Pioneer AVIC-F950BT with appradio mode & ARUnchained doing a full mirror of my Nexus 5 while taking a photo of itself

http://i.imgur.com/oAxxGi5.jpg

I bought the facia kit that was recommended on several other 2015 wrx threads but I think those kits are for the non-nav OEM units. The nav unit has a large radius on the corners so it doesn't fit:
http://i.imgur.com/r9Fb5D9.jpg

You can see the larger radius on the trim with the facia sitting behind it:
http://i.imgur.com/7ib7gWR.jpg

I'm taking it apart again to finish off the job over the weekend once I get the proper facia kit, so I will share my harness for those hanging out to hear from David.

Aww man I'm jealous! I'm one of the poor saps that bought the Nav/Hk upgrade, just because I heard the stock stereo/speakers on my test drive and I'm pretty sure my iPhone sounded better. Plus the HK has the sub behind the rear seat headrest and liked that location better than the kicker taking up trunk space. I'll probably wait a while to justify the $1K head unit and try out a couple to see what I like better. Plus I end up turning off the stereo anyway during city driving cuz I love hearing the fa20 purr!

What did you use for the gps antenna? Were you able to re-use the factory one? The plugs are different and wondering if there's an adapter out there somewhere.

I just left the factory GPS and used the pioneer GPS that came with my nav unit.

Fixed up the facia kit with some of the toyota 'ears' instead of the facia kit recommended on the first page of this thread. The ears didn't really fit either so I made some minor reshaping to the ears to make it fit until I find a better solution.

Yeah I don't really like the look of the finish but it will have to do for now...I might try and mould one myself if I can be bothered.

I used the toyota ISO harness which pretty much got the basic stereo functions working.

http://aerpro.com/APP0141

For the other features like VSS, parking brake, reverse gear etc. I made my own dodgy pins to individually plug into the factory 28-pin harness (I can't find this adaptor anywhere so waiting for SVXDC to send me one).

Facia kit was for toyota as well, they're called 'ears', I can't really find a model number but these were the ones I bought

Thanks.

I found http://www.amazon.com/Axxess-AX-TOY28SWC-Steering-Controller-Connector/dp/B00BXF5A74 which I think will give you SWC and AUX but no VSS or reverse, but I don't think VSS is required for navigation (it might make it more accurate, but phones and portable nav units seem to work fine without it) and neither is reverse if you're not messing with a reverse camera. But yeah, if SVXDC has one that gives you everything that's probably better.

Were you able to retain the factory USB port in the console, if so, which adapter did you use? And did those ears need any modifications?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm planning on installing the same Pioneer unit in a WRX with nav and want to make sure I get everything I need.

Oh wow that's great! Thanks for sharing that - I think it would work perfectly. I already have some pins that I could just add to that harness to make it a full fit for VSS and reverse

Yeah the ears needs some minor modification, I had to shave off some of the back part of the ears (not visible from the face once installed). It's kind of hard to explain sorry.

The factory USB port can be kept with the adaptor on the first page of this thread, I didn't use it though because i'm using the USB on the rear of the pioneer unit already for a connection to my phone via HDMI.

Thanks. I can only find those ears from eBay sellers in Australia, but looks like they do ship internationally. Although I'm wondering if a dash kit for an XV Crosstrek or 2014 WRX with navigation (which use the same head unit) would work in a 15 WRX and I'd have no problem getting one of those here.

So, my first wiring harness hook up. I will tweak it with zip ties and some more but after reading and reading and watching video's on youtube I think it came out pretty good for my first time. If it works...lol

http://i.imgur.com/Cx8cNne.jpg

It's not complete, still have to cover unused wires also but let me know if you see any warning signs or something wrong. This is my first radio install so I'm all ears if you spot something wrong.

Lower Left White Plug: AE64's 20 pin connector (no cutting of wires)
Higher left black shrink wrap: Video Bypass
Lower Right small black plug: Pioneer 4000NEX connector
Upper Right black box: Axxess Steering wheel controller
