Yep you can definitely paint it, although it is highly recommended that you find a way to remove the 'chrome paint' first. The paint will not properly adhere if the strip still has the glossy chrome finish on it. You can probably just use some fine grit sand paper and paint thinner to get rid of the stuff.

Search for some DIYs on painting the strip, there are a bunch of them out there, and they all give a general idea of how to do it properly.

and to the OP, nice job! Looks fantastic, I'll probably be doing this some time soon also

Its just like doing the headlight painting, you sand, clean, primer, then paint. Just its waaaaaay easier to do the hatch strip, haha.

I think it's great all of the work you guys are doing, plus it looks great!

However, doesn't anyone find this a little ironic? For years, red taillights were never enough and the Altezza taillight craze made everyone go for clear aftermarket taillights. Automotive makers caught on and now make a fair amount of factory clear taillights. NOW, people are changing the clear taillights to a solid red color...once again, not knocking what you guys are doing, because it looks good, but, seriously....does anyone else find this funny?

Yea, but it's just how trends seem to work.
I really enjoy the technology behind the tail lights being and LED and never really thought much about them until I saw this thread. Within a day I had all the tools and was painting away. Who knows, maybe Subaru checks this forum/threads and they will change the clear taillights for '11.

I remember seeing a lot of complaints on the '08 impreza's of the amount of chrome present on them and it looks like for the '09 they listened and removed some of it and left stock colors.
Has anyone had any experience using this before?

its a tape overlay to put over the rear chrome strip, i just wonder if its even worth it or just buy the unpainted part and paint the strip myself.

I would stay away from it. Taping over the chrome piece is just asking for water to get trapped in there and peel the chrome paint or worse. If you are that concerned I am sure there are shops in your area that will paint that one piece a factory color for the same price or maybe less.

Just so you all know, you can buy unpainted STi hatch trims from SGP for about 55$ (before shipping).

That way you can go back to "stock" if you ever needed to, for whatever reason

55? Where are you looking?
I see $111, before shipping.

Has anybody used another type of paint for this? I just went to Michael's and no Krylon stained glass/transparent paint there, so I got the Valspar stained glass in "red". The cap looks a little pinkish, so I'm a bit worried it won't work. I'm going to test-spray something else before attacking my lights, but I figured I'd check to see if anybody has tried this other paint.

When you applied the tape to the lights, did you use an exacto knife to cut the lines cleanly?

From what I've read, the best long-term results have been from Duplicolor Metalcast Red with Duplicolor clearcoat overtop. But, a lot depends on the pre-painting prep -- lightly sanding the surface and cleaning. As well as wetsanding the painted surfaces or not... so I'm not sure enough people have done this so far to make a judgement on which paint is holding up best

Did mine with Krylon a few months ago. This has been kicked around IWSTI for a while.

I'd stick with the Krylon, even if you have to order it from somewhere. A friend of mine did his with Testor's, and it's noticeably more dull. The krylon come's out very glossy.

Yup, here's a tip. Mash out the reverse lights with the key on and the car in reverse. You can see the outline of the reverse light section shining right through the tape. If you mask the turn signal area, do it with the lights still on the car, so you mask evenly across the reverse light/turn signal areas. Guess how I figured this one out. I fixed mine by just respraying over the turn signal area...

Also, if you spray the turn signals, I suggest a clear bulb rather than keeping the amber one. Of course, maybe you like red-orange turn signals... I keep meaning to order up some red LEDs for the turns, but haven't gotten to it.

I didn't clear coat mine, they held up well for about 3-4 months in the FL sun. Then I just resprayed 'em dark again. They were starting to look pink instead of red. I also didn't sand them, either. I just cleaned them real well and wiped them down with a bit of rubbing alcohol.
