Post Poll of RS owners: mystery noises from your Sube

I was wondering whether there is any pattern or uniformity in the various squeaks, plunks and rattles that I hear in my car, so I though I would invite responses from i-club members. I have a '99 and I have the following irritating noises (non of which the dealer has been able to diagnose or fix):

(1)metallic plunking noise from left front when coming to a stop. Sounds like it something related to the brakes.

(2) plunking noise from left rear/trunk area (yes I have looked in my trunk), when I go over speed bumps, etc.

(3) dashboard "buzzing" at freeway speeds from instrument panel.

(4) rubbing noise from steering wheel (bushings need lube?)

(5) "rattling" noise when power locks are released.

There are a few more but I feel like I am sounding too anal already. Please include year of car and any diagnosis/fix you have had for the problem. Thanks.

1. buzzing at speed from somewhere between the driver's side kick-panel and the driver's side air vents.

2. sunroof/dome-light buzz/rattle

3. whole lotta engine noise since replacing the transmission mount w/ the hardened STi mount. Kinda covers up #1 and #2.

4. Side Mirrors whistled at 30mph and up. Fixed w/ silicone. (I noticed a bit of a whistle on the WRX's mirrors too now.)

5. clunk from rear anti-sway bar/bushing. Fixed w/ teflon tape.

Ever since I got my alarm installed two weeks ago there I can hear the engine louder. Especially when accelerating hard - a whooosh coming from the left side of the dash. Anyone have any idea what that is? Is it just more holes in the firewall from them running the alarm wires or something?

When I kick the A/C on I hear some crazy sound like winding up is the best I can describe.

When I first got the car my keys/keychain would hit the steering colum for a week I thought something was broke until I said oh its my keys.

Going fast, hitting turns or on dirt roads everything in my doorpanels and center console ping pong and konck.

I hope this helps!

Yeah I don't know about any of your noises, but I have a noise that sounds like a turbo spooling-up. I know it isn't the mirrors b/c I will go to shift and let off the gas and the whistle dies. I hit the gas pedal agian and it happens again. I didn't buy the car used and just curiously looked under the hood for maybe a turbo. Hoping that they imported the wrong car and I got it. That would be great.

RS22b, the turbo sound you hear may be an exhaust leak.

RS22b,

Could that noise you're hearing be coming from the speakers? Sounds like you may have electrical interference in your audio system - the alternator can cause a whine in the system that fluctuates with RPM.

1. Clunking from driver's side rear section during moderate to hard cornering. Possible strut rubbing on wheel well.

2. Insane noise from shifter at high RPM's. Have to check that S-bracket / transmission mount area posted earlier.

A search would have resulted in the fix for most of these. these are some of the sources and fixes:

1.rear squek. The rear deck lid rubs on the rear window. Stuff a piece of small thin foam material btween the two.

2.rear clicking/clanking. There is a piece in the driver side rear pillar. you need self tapping screws to put in there to hold down the piece of loose metal.

3. steering wheel clicking. As stated above, your keys. That drove me nuts for a few days...

4. Tapping metal sound fromt eh firewall area. There is a bracket attached to the tranny, that is tapping the firewall. Some peopls have also had the wires zip-tied as well to stop the tapping noise from up front.

5. Winding noise. Electrical interferance comming through your speakers. I have heard that this is due to any # of things. Such as bad plug wires, cheap/small gauge wifre for your stereo, or having all your wtereo wires too close to each other.

6. Sunroof squeaks. Several fixes. Some have said additional small layer of weather stripping. But others have said that a very thin coat of vasaline/oil on the rubber gasket that seals the sunroof panal to the roof. I tend to agree with the latter, but to be honest I don't have this noise......yet, so I can't say for sure.

That is most of the ones That I have heard of since being here. If you find more/and the fixes, please let me know so I can add them to my mental list....

I kept hearing this noise every time I shifted. I couldn't seem to locate the exact source of the sound. Then it dawned on me that I'm just hearing the exhaust pops. Sounds crappy in the stock exhaust system. Kinda like the sound of a wet mop smacking a hollow metal container. That's what it made me think of.

1.) Whenever I brake and the brakes are cold, there's something like a gurgle/boiling sound... I think a rock is stuck there somewhere...

2.) The fan for the airconditioner is ticking depending on speed, disappers the stronger the fan is. That is really annoying. Yes, it does sound like there's leaves there... how can you remove that?

3.) The keys!!

I have a MY01 2.5 RS with about 4000 miles on it. It has been making a creaking (actually popping) sound whenever the chassis experiences flex. This happens when driving over irregular pavement during a turn or when turning on to a street from a higher parking lot ect...The sound seems to be coming from the upper rear portion of the car near the back pillars. I took it in to my dealer and they said they hear the same sounds. However, instead of investigating where exactly it was coming from they decided to drive another customer's RS to see if it made the same noise. Of course they said it did so they feel it must be normal. I feel that they now have 2 cars with the same problem. Is anyone else out there experiencing the same sounds? Is the chassis these RSs that weak? 2 days later.....There are 2 location for my dealer here in KC, so I took my car into the other location and they had a tech ride with me. He said there is definitely something not right. He spoke with the service mgr. and they feel that a Subaru rep. should look at the car. I didn't want to wait for them to contact SOA so I did it myself and today a Subaru Midwest technical rep called and is setting up a time to come to KC and drive the car and figure out what the next step is. This sucks, I really love this car more than any I have owned and now I have this big problem with it. It only has 4800 miles on it and already stuff is not going well. I'm sure everything will work out but it may take awhile.

3days....Subaru rep is coming here to drive my car and figure out what is wrong.
