I like it. Not surprising on the mpg, since 2.4L Sonata is rated 35mpg on a highway.
Hate that "turbo" on the seats though. |

saw this car on the road the other day, the styling definitely makes you do a double take ... however for a 3 car hatchback, I was a bit surprised as how large the car looks in person

Toyota's interior is ugly as sin. The slight performance gain is certainly not worth having to stare for years at one of the ugliest, most mundane interior out there. Hyundai wins in that respect.

Where did I say anything about interiors? I said that the Sonata turbo doesn't perform where you'd expect given the "official" numbers. Motor Trend simply used the Camry Hybrid as a comparison in performance.

V6 Camry was about $4k more expensive than 2.0T in that comparison test. TDI was about $8k more expensive than 2.0T.

We don't know how differently the cars were equipped. MT didn't say if they were equally equipped. Navigation, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring and such can swing the prices quite a bit. The Passat was a 3.6L V6 gasser. Again, I was just commenting on performance relative to the numbers.

I think it looks pretty darn good, except for the "turbo" on the seats (I could stomach it if it had like 300hp, but not for 200). Power is what we had heard about all along, but still sounds very underwelming. Should have at least 220hp+. Why would you want this instead of a GTI?

Got news for all of you who love the flat paint scheme. It is a fad. It will fade and will age BADLY.
It will be just like this color in the 90's. Plus the flatness will not last long as washing will make areas shiny. I would love a veloster in shiny uber gloss black or red. |

Did they release pricing yet, I didn't see anything (not sarcasm)? A new GTI can be had for 22-23K for the 2 door, that already comes with a ton of standard equipment, a little more power, and I would bet a lot more refinement. Even as questionable as VW general reliability is, I would not say that it is worse than Hyundai with unproven tech/parts. VW may have the windows stop working, a sway bar endlink crap out, or have a cooling fan die, but the engine will keep going. I would still much rather have a turbo VW engine under my hood than a turbo Hyundai. The current GTI engine has been around for a while and is pretty well sorted out and capable of handling a good bit of power with no to minimal upgrades/work.
Don't get me wrong, I like what Hyundai has been doing and am certainly impressed with all the changes they have been making, but I just don't see this as being something all that interesting unless the car is priced below $20,000, without being stripped out. I just don't think they went far enough with this car in regards to performance, which is what this little car is about (so says the styling, "turbo" on the seats, and that they already have a slower, mundane base model for those who don't want a sporty driving experience). Maybe I am just expecting too much......... |

Well all good points for sure...
But the Veloster is pretty light compared to the GTI, so maybe its charm is the way it handles...At 2800 lbs. 200/200 is pretty darn nice. |
