never seen this done before, but several things are absolute-
you'll have no problems with fitment. the wiring might be an issue, you cannot simply plug the legacy's halogen bulb female socket into the HID ballast. you might have to construct a wiring harness: an excellent write-up of that is available here: http://www.hidplanet.com/forums/view...fdbb3fac52ceeb the aiming, however, is going to be a significant issue. JDM rhd cars have a VERY different beam pattern than US lhd cars... not only is the cutoff opposite, but the intensity is different. you'll have to aim them farther down and you'll lose a significant amount of roadsign illumination. since these are reflector HIDs, you won't be able to modify the cutoff. basically- good luck. these will give you great output and color, if you are ever driving on RHD roads. otherwise, good luck reading the street signs without crawling to a stop and putting a flashlight out the window. not to mention, they'll be illegal. |

Some information from Australia. The 3rd Gen. Legacy came in two flavors - early and late. Early was 10/98 - 7/01 and late was 8/01 - 7/03. The US (possibly Canada too?) only came in the early flavor. Pictured above is the late model which has slightly different shaped headlights and what not. So it looks like these won't work.
Does Canada get the same vehicles as US or do they have the early and late model 3rd Gen. Legacy like Japan, Australia, etc.? Just trying to figure out what part of the world I need to sell my new lights to. |

Just received the HIDs. Different than the ones pictured at the very top, but they fit my 01 Legacy Outback perfectly. I can swap out the turn signal and parking light bulb assemblies w/ the stock ones w/ just an 1/8 of a turn. The big question is how is it wired? You can see the green and yellow going into the back of the high/low beam bulb assembly and then there's red and black going to the ballast. Can anyone help here? It looks like yellow and green are the high and low beam switches while red is battery and black is ground. Can somebody confirm?

I found my security bits and was able to open up the bulb assembly. Green and yellow go to the high beams. The green wire is the same as the stock wiring and is the switched ground. Yellow ties to the constant +12V common which is gray or black on the stock wiring.
(HID) Green <-> (Stock) Green = high beam switched ground (HID) Yellow <-> (Stock) Gray or Black = high/low beam +12V common *(HID) Red <-> (Stock) Gray or Black = high/low beam +12V common *(HID) Black <-> (Stock) Red = low beam switched ground * - these connections need to be upgraded. I ran a fused 12ga connection for the +12V. The switched ground will have to run through a relay. I temporarily hooked everything up to the driver side light and fired it up. As others have metnioned, the beam pattern is not good for oncoming traffic. The beam has a nice cutoff, but once it gets beyond the car to the left, it rises at about 30 degrees to illuminate the left side of the road (for RHD) which blinds oncoming traffic. I just went around the block and got a good look inside all the parked cars on the other side of the road along w/ the trees and what not. I didn't test the passenger side yet. I'm still running on the stock lights for the time being. |
