finished the Plasti-Dip on the new dash. dear god I hope there's nothing in my carpet I love the texturing too. Obviously, it's impossible to match the stock plastic dash texture (not talking about the stereo fascia... I mean the actual dash) but this comes pretty close and I'm happy with it.
OP - what clips on the backside of the JDM Double DIN replacement did you cut? The top center stereo fascia one? I think this whole power button business is probably very easy. It's less than an inch from the top of the new double DIN cover. I can't imagine it'd be hard to make a cut, sand it smooth, use the cut piece to fashion a button with 1mm space between the dash and the button, and superglue a 1" piece of plastic to the inside of the button, and then on the backside of the dash fabricate some sort of guide for the pushrod. It can't be that gorram hard. I'd bet my trip to Home Depot here in a few days (when I have the rest of the items I ordered) provides ample ideas. |

That's looking really good, Sabregen! What inspired the plasti-dip, just like the change in texture or feel of it?
I've been looking at the dash, air vents, Nexus 7 and radios and have come up with what I think I'm going to do with mine: I'm going to remove the air vents altogether, cut the little separator between the vents and install the stereo in that location with the N7 above it. I just did a test fit with an old Sony head unit I had laying around and it looks like it'll work! I *never* use the front vents in a car, I hate air blowing near my face, it's always on defrost + feet, so I'm not overly concerned with heating/cooling the unit past its thermal operating range. I'll have to fashion some wings for it and a spacer to fill the gaps between the dash and the radio, but mounting and depth, it'll work. I don't even have all the parts and I've owned the car for barely more than a week and I'm excited |

i have my front and rear WRX emblems plasti-dipped, and swapped badges out for a very understated look. i also plan to plasti-dip the front grill entirely (hate the mismatched colors there in the blacks). IA Performance didn't have my first choice faceplate, so i ordered the cheapest one and figured if i didn't like the color or it didn't match then i'd plasti-dip it. the Japan silver dash doesn't match the silver or gunmetal in the US versions interior, so Plasti-Dip it was. i actually like it a lot better than the stock faceplate coloring anyways, and I saved over $25 doing it this way (minus the cost of the Plasti-Dip of course, but that has many uses).

Looking into a reverse camera solution.
I do not care to have the reverse action automatically intiaited. I am okay with launching an APP to view camera data. Possible with a few IP camera apps. So now is the hunt for some small mountable cameras to use as backup cameras! |

this is quickly going from the nexus 7 thread to the "automate all of the things and have a mobile entertainment system based on an android tablet" thread.
i bet we could even get the IP camera to be Wifi and have it tethered to the phone or MiFi and be externally accessible. Does DynDNS or anyone else make a dynamic DNS/IP updater client for Android? |

Moving back to the N7 *grin* it looks like a dock will be available shortly for US based folks. This will use the contacts on the side of the device instead of the audio out (headphone) and USB ports. This might make dash installs easier, as we may be able to cannibalize the dock and get at the sweet parts that make the side contacts workable. Just a thought and it's not out yet, so don't go tearing you dash apart. Yet.

I wouldn't hold your breath on the dock doing anything for those of us looking to put them into our dash. the dock's rear ports (the ONLY ones on the dock at all) are the same as the ones on the Nexus 7 themselves (at least on this version of the dock, as seen here:
so.... nothing additional to be gained, unless you were looking to scavenge the ports in order to relocate them or incorporate them else where, we're all SOL on that version of the dock. |

my ae64 harness is "out for delivery" as of 9:07am, and didn't show today. got the USB 12v to 5V 3.0A charger, and the stock USB port (to the center console arm rest) male end interface. Just need the harness and the OTG connector to start testing the charging + USB drive functionality (this will be a very short test. it will either work or it will not).
Also considering adding a second 12v to 5v 3.0A interface and running it to a 2 port USB hub and cutting port openings for the USB hub into the back of the center console for the rear seat passengers to charge their toys. Ugh...wiring! |

All thats left is for my 12v to 5v usb interface, JDM av panel to arrive and ill be able to load in the Nexus. Few questions, how do you guys have your single din headunits mounted? I feel like under hard breaking it would slide forward. |

i'll assume you mean forward towards the dash, not forward towards the front of the car...? i haven't tarted my install yet. i need either the OTG cable to start testing charging+ usb storage, or i need the wiring harness to start soldering connections together for the HU.

zedix - did you relocate your BT module from the rear USB cable to the front port? I'm thinking doing this makes the most sense, as the rear port is then freed up to accomodate wiring in the USB port under the arm rest.

But if you want to keep it, then yes by all means you can relocate the BT module to the front port Makes sense. |

oh and one other question - what did you do about the BT mic that comes stock versus the one that comes with the JVC?

What I did for the JVC one, I routed the cable to the bottom left of the headunit compartment, there's an opening which brings you under the steering wheel. I stuck the mic right above the steering wheel column, so it's partially hidden yet still picks up my voice. The cable is also invisible behind the dash. |

I see. I may try to use the stock mic, and modify the connector from the wiring harness so that it's a 3.5mm male jack on the receiving end.
i'm chomping at the bit to get started... but i know that once i've started, i'll just want it to be done already. perfectly. with no time spent. such is life. |

i didn't mean to imply that i was going to cut into the oem mic... or the housing. i was going to modify the leads coming off of the wiring harness so that the leads went into a mae 3.5mm jack. this is very simple to do.

zedix - which clips on the inside (vent attaching or dash trim attaching) did you modify to fit the Nexus 7 in there?

The dock just sounded like a possible way to free up the ports on the bottom, but I don't know if using the dock would disable the use of the ports, probably
I should get my X80BT in tonight (after work and after classes) and locating it where the stock nav system was. In the future it'll go where the existing air vents are, I think it'll be a clean install and make the head unit accessible for whatever needs may arise. I don't know how much I'll need to use the head unit, but when I thought about the inability to connect an external HDD to the N7 (usb will be tied up with charging), the only other option is directly to the head unit. |

which is why I'm keeping the USB under the arm rest live. i tried getting my music into the clous and using Google Music to stream them on my drive from Phoenix out to CA the other day, but when cell service slows to 3G, the amount of buffering makes for a ****ty music experience. I suppose it would work around town, though.
Also, for those of us planning on doing this mod, grab the 50 Scanner app from the Play store. Local police and fire scanner chatter. You know... because racecar |
