Default 200hp SOHC 2.5?

two part question, how hard would it be to swap from a DOHC phase 1 EJ25 to a SOHC Phase 2? and how hard would it be to get 200hp out of it.

Lets see if you do the full swap (ecu harness and all) mildly difficult

The second part

You should forget about swapping and buy a EZ30/6R or turbo EJ equipped car if you want 200Hp and not have to spend an azzload (yes I evaded the swear filter on purpose )

200 hp at the crank, not too difficult and if you are capable of tuning. plan on $1000-$2000 ish range. 200 at the wheels, not going to happen without serious $ and skills. far more economical to swap to a EJ255/EJ257 if your goal is the latter.

I dunno, Monson hit 200 at the wheels, didn't he?

Basic formula would be something like the best possible headers (TWE), high-compression pistons, PnP heads, and cams. Nothing in that list is too crazy and wouldn't set you back more than $3200 in parts.

Where this all goes to hell is in actually building the damned thing into a working, semi-reliable streetable engine. It's not the least bit outrageous to say that you're easily going to spend another $4000 in coatings, bearings, seals, gaskets, supplies, special bolts, valves, springs, etc before the first time you turn the engine over.

I don't know what the goals are here, but 200hp has become some sort of a "mark" I guess for a bolt-on SOHC EJ25. I would think that it would be best to just put in cams, get exhaust and tune it. Intake seems to be an iffy mod on these cars.

I have a 2.5i and its good enough for me running at 92oct tuned for now. Maybe delta 1000 grind cams or the WRX later. Otherwise, its a waste of money unless obviously money is of no concern or NA is your choice.

Why 200hp?

Not really that important that it is 200, I just saw that as a somewhat attainable number, but from the discussion it sounds like 200 is out of my budget. honestly it is all pretty much a pipe dream at this point until i get a better job.

as someone who's lived the pipe dream for years.... if your on a budget & you're going to swap it anyway. put in a turbo. unless, you're looking to be NA for a specific reason.

Fun is in just about everyone's budget though. First of all, you can do suspension in cheap chunk and that'll make the car more fun and faster than anything else you can do to the car. Second, if you feel you have to have more power, good headers and street cams will make the car a lot of fun and will cost about as much as a full suspension.

Nope. I hit about 220 at the crank on stock pistons/compression. IHE, cams and headwork will get you there. There's another 10-15bhp in high compression and yet another 15-20bhp in tune. 250 at the crank isn't all that hard. 300 at the crank is major...

It's worth noting that you can do cams, headers, exhaust, intake, and reflash/tune with the engine in the car.

Weight reduction is your friend as well. light weight battery, hood, bumper beam, flywheel and you've knocked almost 100lbs off the front end which really helps make the handling more neutral.

Since I'm basically dealing with the same car (95 L coupe, 1.8L), I'll tell you what I'm about to do and I'm thinking you will want to follow suit...

2.5L sohc phase II
EJ257 head gaskets
Delta cams
headers
GD STi catback

Use your 1.8L manifold/parts and maintain the 1.8L ecu.

I'm thinking that will get you close to what you want, and certainly won't break the bank...

i am near 200HP with intake, crank pulley, header, high-glow cat, and catback. i gained 25WHP with those mode wich is at least 25CHP, which comes out to at least 190-195CHP. adding suspension stuff helps too.

if your 1.8L heads have the same coolant passages as the 2.2's did you *might* be better served with the custom hg cometic does for the 2.2/2.5 hybrids, plus what's the volume of the combustion chamber on the ej18's, it might shoot your compression past whats possible on pump gas...

I just built a 2.2/2.5 hybrid and with the port sizes and manifold they are better suited to making torque than hp, i am shooting for 200 crank hp, i hope the port job/cams/El header, will flow enough up high to get to 200 hp

on my 2.2 i could see where the cams/heads were limiting the power up top ~5500+

Unless you happen to have the TWE header, which I know you don't because you're an Xcelleration fanboi, either you or your dyno is lying.

I noticed in my first post that i forgot to identify the car I am talking about, this is actually a 99 Leg GT that i just bought. and that said weight is even more priority. I am actually selling the 95. I am already planning to swap the Prodrive P1's from my impreza to the Leg.

It seems like these same items are mentioned over and over... nothing really new out there.

I remember Extrude honing being very popular awhile back. Has anyone ever had their intake extrude honed and documented the results?

Also, Is the 05+ intake better than the earlier 2.5 SOHC intakes and does it easily bolt on?

Yes, the 05-07 intake manifold is significantly better than the older models. It does bolt onto the heads directly, but you'll have some fun fitting an cable throttle body and IACV to it since it's a DBW manifold. It's been done, but it requires a little custom fabbing.

yes, because the crank pulley does not add any power. It is freeing rotational mass and you can feel it to an extent, but it has ZERO impact on the actual numbers. So you are saying you are within a few ponies of 200 bhp with an exhaust, header and intake... Now I had all of your mods on my RS and I had the opposite.. According to my butt dyno I was not a few under 200 but more like a few if any over stock.

When I bought my Audi back in 09 and brought it home, I still had my RS for a week until I sold it. The stock engine in most 2.0T's then besides the TT is 200HP. I had tested a GTI and went with an A4 in the end for practicality, not a jetta guy.. I can safely say my RS with all of your mods was a DOG compared to the heavy 200HP GTI and 211 HP heavier A4.
