Default Headers Q

I have Tomioka Racing UEL headers & up-pipe combo. I don't like the raspy tinny sound that they make since they are thinner than the stock cast iron mofo's lol
I was wondering if I sprayed them with VHT ceramic coating and wrapped them if it would dampen the noise a bit?
05 STi.

Thank you.

You are also doomed as we have no idea what you are talking about. Tinny at the front of the motor as in the sound emanating FROM the headers or tinny at the rear as it exits the tailpipe? As to the front of the motor, not even Jesus can tune header sound, so wrap them with bacon if you like as NO ONE can tell you that XXX product will do YYY to sound. Try, try, try is your only hope with acoustic theory leaning more towards wrap than coating and if you are going to wrap, use boss level wrap http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2303664 As to the tailpipe, there is zero you can do other than MAYBE putting in a resonator in the piping and that might be a $100 losing proposition.

Yes at the front. I was just curious of people noticed a sound difference after they wrapped theirs. The stock headers are so quiet (über thick). I would assume spraying them then wrapping them will help with the sound a bit. I love my exhaust note at the rear but don't like the tinny sound up front. I'm trying to decide on spraying and wrapping or just reading someone for stock headers.

I've never noticed a tone difference in the exhaust between unwrapped, wrapped, and coated headers. So I am going to say it will make no audible difference regardless of what you do.

Could it possibly, in theory, make a tiny difference? Yeah, maybe .. but the difference will be so minor as to be almost undetectable.

If you hate the sound of what you have, then your only real option is what you suggested ... getting different headers.

Wrapping may help if you put like 5 layers on...

NO, NO, NO do not wrap them anymore then the normal amount, the right way. Over wrapping a exhaust header will over-heat the header pipes and will weaken the material the header is made off. Causing cracking and rusting.

Physics say anything you insulate will also insulate sound.

Pretty cut and dry answer.

Wrap a bunch of stuff around your muffler and let me know if it changes the sound at all coming out of the exhaust pipe.

You may get a sound deadening effect in the cabin from that, but the exhaust volume and tone will not change at all, because that sound is traveling through an open hole ... just like a header.

If one could simply change exhaust volume by wrapping exhaust we would all be running straight pipes "wrapped" to our sound/volume preference .... it don't work like that at all.

You do realize he's essentially talking about cabin noise, right?

Wrapping would have an effect (theoretically) on volume out of the tail pipe. In practice? Very very minimal if at all detectable.

So if I switch to OEM headers with an aftermarket up-pipe would I need a retune?

The op was very clearly asking about the combustion sounds radiating through the thinner wall of the headers compared to the muffled sound the thick cast iron manifolds have. Adding insulation will.... Insulate. Heat AND sound.

All sets of headers on all cars I've installed all clearly radiate noise through them substantially more than the cast manifolds from the OEM.

In his second post he should have made it clear to anybody that he was NOT talking about noise coming from the exhaust tip.

Ask your tuner, it is hard to say, but my guess would be yes.

The OP only says his headers sound "raspy and tinny". Does he mean from inside the car or outside? I have no idea but the answer is that same either way.

We seem to agree the answer to his question is that wrapping or coating won't fix his complaint.

I've run the same headers on a 2.5 without anything, then wrapped, and then coated ... it did not change the sound in any way that my ears could detect.

He's talking about noise from the header itself. I'd say make sure there's nothing rattling on it, then if you really want to, wrap it. It'll give you a chance to make sure it isn't leaking or anything as well.

As I stated above, I have tried each method and noticed no sound change at all from the header. But hey, I put it on to deal with heat so maybe there was some miniscule change in sound and I didn't notice it.

A performance header is going to be noisier than the stock unit no matter what you do, and minus wrapping it in some flammable sound deadening material you are not going to change that.
