Default 2010 wrx vs 2010 sti

Hey guys!

im going to be leasing either a wrx or an sti in the coming months. But i cant seem to decide which to get. im sure this is a common problem.

the wrx is 460$ a month here, and the sti is 550$ a month. im looking for a 48 month lease. now here is where im torn the most. i belive the wrx is better value, but it just doesnt look aggressive enough for my taste. i love the way the sti looks. however its 1k more expensive per year on lease, and more expensive on insurance.

recently i test drove a wrx 2010 with intake, catback and rsb, to sum it up:

I just got the 2010 wrx wagon and am loving it. I test drove both and decided for my 40 mile drive (both ways) to work, the slightly softer ride of the wrx is better. The price is nice as well. Yes, the STI looks amazing, but I guess it depends ultimately on what you're driving it for.

Yeah that reaction is what I still feel in my '04 WRX, cant wait for Stage II.

I would say for the extra $$ go with the STI. You get the 6 speed tranny, DCCD, better brakes, etc etc etc

Yes they lease STI's.

I have a 2010 WRX 5-Door SWP. Only options are Shift Knob, arm rest extension, and interior lighting. 42 months was the sweet spot. I haggled for about a month until I got what I wanted. I am paying $310/month for 42 months and 15k miles per year, with $500 down and all maintenance included. A total of $13,210. The OTD price was around $25k. Residual is around $12,900.

The lowest I got on the STI was $430 per month on a 39 month at 15k miles per year. I did not think the extra $120 a month was worth it, after driving them back to back several times. Not to mention the change in insurance premium which was around $50 a month higher.

I like leases when they are a good deal. I like buying too, but I did take a bad hit on resale in my '06 S4 because some dude rear ended me causing about $10k in damage. His Insurance picked up the tab, but I took a beating on resale because it was on the Carfax. Leasing takes this risk out of the equation.

$550/mo for a lease on an STi? You can buy one with low miles that's less than 2 years old for less than that.

Actually, if you have around I dunno, $8k on the down payment, a decently equipped and a decent warranty (gold plus) would be around $550 on the payment if I recall from my 08 for 60mo. My 08 actually was more expensive than the 2010 but let's not get into details but I owe way more now on my new one but I'm happy, and kicking myself but happy :LOL

$35,000 STI Purchased at 2.8% APR for 60 months is $625.80

If you keep the car for 3 years, like most people do. The loan payoff is $15,769.

Assuming you could sell it for $20k. Your net monthly cost of ownership is $505.75

True, if you keep your cars longer, buying is a better deal. But I have purchased enough cars to know that 3 years is pushing it for me.

Also putting down more cash changes the interest. In the example above, at year 3, you will have paid about $2,000 in intest. If you put $10k down would save you about $500 in interest. Tying $10k up in a car for 3 years to save $500 is not worthwhile, if you ask me.

I still want to know how his lease payment would be $460 for a WRX, that's absurd. That's over 22,000, not including the lease fees. You can pretty much buy a brand new base sedan for that much and actually have something worth money sitting in your driveway and not a rental.

Maybe he is in Canada.

From the US website

Impreza WRX

Starting at $24,995*

Lease a 2010 Impreza WRX for $279/Month on a 42-Month Lease (Standard model, code AJN-01)**

That is with no negotiating and a sedan.

Work them on the price of the car, not the monthly payments. Every dollar off of Asking price makes a big difference when leasing becuse it does not effect the residual value, that is fixed.

Actually its $475 (payoff is only $14,589 after 36 months)
And if you buy it for 33k and sell it for 23k, which is a bit more realistic IMO, your monthly cost of ownership is $333

Sure, but show me a 3 year old STI with 45,000 miles that sold for $23k. Most people are asking $17-19K

Also show me a 2010 STI that sold for $33k OTD.

That is called wishfull thinking and only gets you in trouble.

my 2010 wrx premium with a few light add ons and stupid extra waranty my wife wanted is I think 430 or 440 a month for i thnk 42months or something like that...so I can understand how this would be 460.....general rule of thumb for leasing is take the advertised price and add $100-$200 to it.

Those are the prices for 04-05 STis...07 asking prices are around 27-29k, with a bit of negotiation you could get them down to 23k, but even that's a bit on the low side. Just do a quick search on autotrader for 2007 STis, the top 17 matches are all over 26k. The 07s sold for less when they were new than the 2010s are as well, which means theoretically the 2010s will be worth more in 3 years than the 2007s are today, but there's no way to know that for sure.

I can't show you somebody who got a 2010 STi for 33k because I don't have those kind of resources in front of me and I don't work at a dealership, but it happens.

I'm guessing the OP is from Canada considering he has MTL in his name.

'10 STI's in Canada are $42k base price. I leased mine for 48 months for $560/month.
