Default Safety: Let's see how the Impreza does later this year...

Here's a link to a recent test of side impacts on small cars. Lots of poor ratings with the Neon getting the worst. The Impreza is going to be tested in the near future.

doesn't suprise me that small cars are rated as low in side impact crashes. Cars have the least amount of protection on the sides, moreover, small cars have small masses and simply cannot offer superior protection in crashes.

The impact tests were part of the reason I bought my impreza.

The results were good to bad largely dependant on side airbags which teh WRX has standard. The one's that got poor ratings (the neon) were models without airbags.

Not bad, actually, about average/a bit above average:

Test Scores: Front 7 (44%) Side 15 (83%)

It's really not just about size anymore. Granted, I'm glad I wasn't hit by an SUV, but there are so many more protective measures these days than there were even 10 years ago.

At least now one can do teh SRT4 is teh saf3r

I wouldn't try to extrapolate from EuroNCAP side impact test results to predict IIHS results. They're very different tests (explained at http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...&postcount=111). EuroNCAP tries to predict what would happen if a small car (2,094 lbs) crashed into the side, while the IIHS tries to predict what would happen if a light truck (3,307 lbs) with a much higher bumper crashed into the side.

For example, ANCAP (Austrailia) testing and scoring is identical to EuroNCAP and the newly designed Legacy (called Liberty there) received a perfect ANCAP side impact score, 18 (100%) (see http://www.mynrma.com.au/liberty_03_...liberty_sc.asp). However, when the IIHS tested the new Legacy last year, it received only a "Marginal" overall rating on the side impact test (see http://www.highwaysafety.org/vehicle...side/s0411.htm).

It will be interesting to see how the redesigned Impreza does later this year.
