Default So about the 08 Impreza hill start assist...

In theory this seems like a good thing. I was wondering what people with 08s have to say about it. I've read good and bad comments scattered about this forum.

I have a few questions:

1. How steep of an incline is required for it to activate, or is it everytime you stop with the clutch depressed?

2. Does it work the same in reverse? (I would assume so but..)

3. How long do the brakes hold? (I've read anywhere from 1 to 12 seconds, which is it?)

I've seen posts on here with people complaining of having to slip the clutch, 1st gear sticking, grinding noises and whatnot. Personally I wouldnt mind having this feature, is there some reason I shouldnt want it?

Just learn how to drive stick better...

BMW adapted this technology to the new 3 series a few years ago... my moms 330i has it, and i think it's annoying as hell.

I have no experience with it, but here's a Subaru article explaining it.

I drive my 5sp just fine, but it is a really touchy scene on a steep hill. When in my old jeep I could "float the clutch" to avoid roll back no problem. In my 2.5i its a different story. Let the clutch out a bit too much and its stall city. Plus there is the throttle lag that still plagues me and doesnt make it any easier. Please explain what makes it "annoying as hell".

And thanks for the link 05wrxmatt, I've seen that before but it don't really answer my questions. Apparently the new system does release at some point. Trying to find out as much as I can about it since I'm seriously considering upgrading to the WRX next spring.

I think subaru also had it on one model some 20 odd years ago.

Its on 07 and I think 06 foresters as well.

If its "annoying" or you ever have any need to do ANYTHING special when you drive with it, then its not adjusted properly. If you have to do weird clutch slipping or first gear grinding, then your hill holder is not adjusted properly.

1. Doesnt take much of an incline.

2. Only works when the nose of the car is higher than the rear. So no, it doesnt work if you are backing up a hill.

3. They release as soon as you release the clutch. Or it should. Its a mechanical mechanism, there is no timer, if its holding after the clutch pedal has come up more than an inch off the floor, then you need to take your car to the dealer to have it adjusted. Its supposed to release IMMEDIATELY.

Can it be disabled (30 years of stick driving here; no need for hill-holder foolishness)?

hmm..I'd sure like this on my rex..would be quite helpful where I live. I don't have any problems with hillstarts, but what the heck.

My mother in laws 03 Forester has it, and it works very well. Just push in the brake with the clutch in, and release the brake, and it sticks. It is easy to use. I have heard that they had lots of problems, and had to discontinue it. It is a nice option to have, but I have no problems starting my wrx on a hill, unless the AC is on!

umm... i just drove one the other day, and it had nothing to do with the clutch pedal. on an incline, with feet on clutch and brake, release brake, you have about 1-2 seconds to start moving forward, or the 'brake' releases and you start going backward. it's plenty of time to move your feet, and makes hills a bit simpler. i personally don't have a problem with hills, but i can see where it could help someone out.

There is no 1-2 second delay on it. If there is, its not adjusted properly and is sticking. Its a mechanical device, there is no timer. It doesnt release after 1-2 seconds if its working properly either, it will hold pretty much indefinately until you lift off the clutch pedal.

I used to think they were stupid as well, and I hated mine, then I adjusted it properly and you never even know its there till you stop on a hill.

this is correct. i have it on my 08 forester and at first it was kinda a pain, but now that i have driven with it for two months i dont even notice it (well i do if i drive other cars that are stick). And i love how when friends jump in to dirve my car the always say its the wierdest thing

Mine stuck on flat ground when I got my FXT. I adjusted it and now its awesome. I think the guys that always say how they hate it have probably only driven cars with hill holders that were not adjusted properly.

This is nothing new. My 15 year old Legacy has it. Like most of the others have said, I find it quite convenient.

So it sounds like those who are complaining may just need an adjustment. Thats good to know, thanks for the info Defiant Autospeed.

And for the record, I wasnt asking because I can't pull out on a hill. I just don't particularly enjoy it. Why raise my blood pressure in the morning if I don't have to? A little help is welcome, as long as its not intrusive.

I'm going to put this in large letters.. not because I'm yelling, but because it needs to be noticed in this thread:

The Hill Holder device is completely different on the 2008 Impreza. It is electronically controlled via the brake system.. no longer a valve on the master cylinder as it was in the previous system still used on the 2008 Forester. It works completely differently and should never need adjustment.

I hope that clears a few things up.

I'm pretty sure it was on all the models 20 years ago. There were a lot of complaints from the Subaru faithful when it started disappearing with the introduction of hydraulic clutch actuation. It was extremely simple when the clutch was still cable operated.

Edit - BB beat me to it.

No. It is new for 2008.

It is called Incline Start Assist, and is integrated into the VDC. Not mechanical at all anymore.

Quote
"Incline Start Assist is designed for when a vehicle starts off on a hill, the brake remains on for approximately one second after the driver removes his or her foot from the brake to prevent the vehicle from rolling backward. This is designed to assist drivers who are not well versed in hill starts to start up smoother and with confidence. This feature is only on models with manual transmissions.

End quote

I have owned a few with the old mechanical system, and this one is much less intrusive, no initial jump when the brakes are released. Totally slick and seamless. Wife even commented that she like the new one. LOL

....."Some drivers struggle to simultaneously work the clutch, brake and accelerator pedals to prevent rolling back after stopping on a steep hill."......

I hit a steep hill first day on my manual learning car years ago, and didn't have a problem. Just used a handbrake. Clutch realased slowly, press gas, handbrake down, go....Now its a walk in a park less handbrake....
