Dom 1.5xtr JJ tuned

Default hta68/built motor 387hp/411tq

Shop: Maxwell Power Services
Location: Arlington, WA
Ambient Temp: About 50 degrees F
Elevation: 200 feet
Weather: Cloudy

Car: 2006 WRX
Tuner: Dominic
Dyno Info: Dynocom
Transmission: Stock 5-speed
Gear:3rd
Peak HP at RPM: 387 @6400 rpm (about 340 on a Mustang)
Peak Torque at RPM: 410.8 @ 3950 rpm (about 360 on a Mustang)
Baseline hp/tq for a stock Sti on same dyno: 245/245

Target Boost: 21.8 psi
Target AFR: 10.7
Fuel: 92 pump

Engine/Power Modifications: HTA68 with 10cm hotside installed by Dom, Helix catted downpipe, STi intercooler, Invidia Q300 catback, Gimmick inlet hose, 725cc injectors, Walbro fuel pump, APS Cold air intake, Agency Power UEL header, TGV deletes, Grimmspeed Uppipe, Prosport MBC for hybrid boost control.

Driveline Modifications: ACT street clutch
Suspension Modifications: Whiteline F/R swaybars, Stoptech stage 2 brakes
Tires: Federal SS595 215/45/17 on stock WRX wheels.

After my #4 ringland objected to 75k modded miles, I went with a Maxwell Power Factor SS EJ257 with some B25 heads. The block has JE pistons, H-beam rods, ACL bearings and is balanced/blueprinted. I also added some stronger springs and 264 exhaust cams, plus an Accessport so that Dom could do a speed density tune. A post-intercooler IAT sensor helps keep things safer.

The car's last tune (and the very last for the previous motor) produced 371hp at 5900 and 400tq at 3950. The new build has noticably more kick up top. Dom did the pull up to 7500rpm, but you can see there's not much point in holding it that long, except that in first gear I no longer bounce off the limiter (now set to 7700) and the extra headroom puts the shift to 2nd in a very good place.

The powerband is pretty good -- over 350hp/tq for almost 4k of range.

It will be fun to go bigger in the future, but the next upgrade, someday, will have to be the tranny.

Yea for sure get some work on that tranny.

Great job though! Good numbers and this a good read. I plan on running a 68hta with 850cc injectors and a walbro. I like seeing this because I'm aborting my plan on moving to e85. I'll be staying with 93 pump.

Thanks for the read.

Definitely go with the 850's -- Dom said my 725's were getting close to max.

I bet its fun to drive. What kind of valve springs did you go with?

I wonder how Dom likes tuning with SD?

Nice graphs. I am doing a similar build, but I will be using a 8cm hot side, I want the boost earlier that where you are getting it. I am willing to sacrifice some off the top end to get power earlier.

Looks very nice! I'm surprised you are losing the power in the higher rpms though with that 10cm hotside. Any head work done besides the cams?

It's got Manley single-coil springs.

He likes keeping the stock MAF for a better idle, I know that much.

The graph goes to 7500 rpm. At 7k it's still putting out over 360hp. Also, the graph is oriented such that the x-axis is more compressed, making the drop-off look steeper than Dom's usual graphs. I'm not sure why it was oriented this way.

No headwork was done besides resurfacing.

thats a great looking graph 68HTA even with the 10cm hotside..and on 92 oct

I think you should consider selling the 725cc injectors for 1000cc or even 1300cc and go with E85 if its in your area. That will be a easy way to see further power while running a bit safer fuel for making power with.

Do you have a Wideband in your car? you should get one since your 725cc can be pushed to their limit easy on a cold day where your boost might spike

There is some, but I make too many long trips in my car -- places where I need the maximum range from my fuel, and where E-85 might not be found.

The injectors might not be a bad idea. Then I could up the boost a bit more -- who know, I might break 400.

Weird my 11 is hitting 320 (318whp) on Akumas very low reading dyno with my HTA68, so are you saying I am around 350-360 on a different (higher) reading dyno?? I am going for the meth to get a little more so in theory I should be right around your numbers w/meth on a stock block, tranny, clutch?

To get my Mustang figures I used a CF of .88 based on head-to-head dynos of my car on the Mustang vs. the Dynocom Dom uses. I was running a VF39 at the time. This particular Mustang also had a low-reading reputation. I'd say your CF would likely be somewhere in the .85-.90 range.

I'd say meth ought to get you there, especially since you have a reputable tuner.

For sure man easily in the 11s with great spool time. (400hp on a mustang dyno is good for 11s)

I think it's slowly picking up a reputation as people learn more about tuning it. It was over-hyped and somewhat deceptively promoted in the beginning, IMO.

It only seems to work well when modified with the 10cm hotside. Even then it's dropping 30+whp up top. That's pretty significant I'd say. Still not impressed with it.

What more do you want from a stock appearing dsm turbo.

Well, you are running a Dom 3.

Edit: I see you had a bad experience with the hta68. Are you back on your Dom 3?

Is there any reason you chose to stay with the stock rod length over the +2 long rod iterations I see MPS going with so often?

I love the max effort build you've got going on with a 'questionable' turbo. It's taken a lot of work, but I'd say your results speak for themselves!

U would be able to get more out of this setup once u get a better TMIC or even FMIC...What are your IDCs with the 725cc?

Rods: I had budget considerations, as well as a desire to stay with a proven formula.

Turbo: Thanks for the kudos. I did want to see what this turbo could do as my contribution to the community. One of these days I'll probably go 20GXT. I shouldn't need to replace anything but injectors. Then we're talking 450 whp or so, or close to 400 on a Mustang.

Dom said they were getting close to max. Dom's not a big fan of huge topmounts. He says once they heat soak they take much longer to cool off. I'm sure a FMIC and bigger injectors would allow me to run more boost and timing, but I don't want to cut my bumper beam. Perhaps in the future, though, I'll rethink this.

Go with a smaller core man something like the injen one. But maybe a custom core by say pwr.
