Default Tire wear and autox

After my last autocross in which I got in over 10 runs, I noticed that the tread on my tires seems significantly scuffed. I have 17/45/225 Sumitomo HTRZ II's with approximately 8,000 miles on the tires. I ran with 39psi up front and 37psi rear. The tires aren't rolling over. My suspension mods are Eibach springs, a Cusco rear swaybar and a custom alignment with -1.0 degrees of camber in front.

I'm not complaining (I had way too much fun for that) and I fully recognize that running tires to (and beyond) their limits of adhesion will result in the tires wearing very quickly. I am wondering though... How many autocrosses can you run before you trash your tires?

Depends on three things... tire, surface and course.

A combination of the three will determine how fast the tire wears. A soft tire on an easy course on asphalt will last longer than a soft tire on an easy course on concrete.. becuase concrete eats tires.

There's too many variables to say... a novice will also go through a tire faster than an expereinced autoxer because they tend to overdrive their tires in corners.

So that said.. tires are a consumable when you auto-x... which is why many have two different sets, even in ST classes.

make that four

driver/driver skill means more than anything else in an autoX as far as tire wear goes

if you're not that good, you can always go slower to save on tire wear....

Given what I've seen from local autocrosses, if you're not that good, going slower will probably mean better times as well as better tire wear.

Here is a link to a picture and little story of the tires I got for my Miata in my first autocross season. Brand new Falken Azenis lasted 3500 miles, 3 months, and about 250 autocross runs -- none on concrete. Of course this is a much lighter car than a Scooby, and the 14" Azenis are half the price of most 17" tires. A very small price to pay for an incredible number of runs to help me learn how to drive.

The Azenis on my STi seem to be doing pretty well. Heavier car and more aggressive driving, but I have a bit more experience now. They still have a lot of tread after something like 30 runs on concrete and another 20 on asphalt. I'm using them as street tires and "test and tune" tires -- tires that are relatively cheap (both in price and longevity) so I won't feel any remorse about "just one more run" when given the chance.

In contrast, a semi-local test and tune day on concrete saw lots of corded tires. A new set of Victoracers on an S2000 lasted about 70 runs. Some of the Civics that seemed to be practicing their drifting skills corded some Azenis to nobody's surprise. My new RA-1 tires lost a lot of their tread but are still going strong (though they now have no tread).

I definately noticed this. On my early runs, I was pushing too hard when I was already beyond the limits of the tires. On the later runs, I backed off a little and had much smoother runs.
