Default What happened to GM/Ford's hydrogen car plans?

I remember hearing last year in some news story hydrogen fuel cell cars would be in production this year or the next. We've heard nothing. This would've been an opportunity for the American makers to get ahead of the Japanese, but I'm not surprised they can't deliver.

They saw file footage of the Hindenberg and reconsidered.

OPEC lined their pockets with gold.

This sorta reminds me of the old urban legend about the carburetor that could get a car to run at 50mpg.

it's gm and ford....besides GM's flop EV cars they aren't willing to risk another such blunder because their cars aren't selling unless they are giving them away.

Yeah, when the civic came out. Except it was called a cvcc or something like that. A friend of my mom's had one when I was growing up.

I doubt those got 40mpg. Hell, even my dad's Datsun 210 on four donut wheels got 30mpg. A slight gust would have that car sliding off the lane.

Did that 210 have a 600cc engine?

Maybe they finally realized that the only inexpensive way to harvest hydrogen is from natural gas wells which then makes affordale hydrogen fuel an expendable resource :P

Slightly off topic but, I think the companies are working backwards, instead of developing a new fuel thats super affordable and unlimited I think they should be focusing on a source of power thats unlimited (tide generators and the like) and just furthur developing the electric car idea. But that is of course just my $0.02

Cheers,
Tim Quinn

I can't recall. It was an extremely tiny engine. But it had 5 gears! Back in the 70's that was like the oddest thing.

It was a montage about GM and it included their hydrogen cars...but it was mainly about the GM employee discount and their cars in general.

With the trouble they're in, you'd figure they would have done something.
worker - "Hay guyz, i just invented something that allows our sedans to get 40mpg!"
bigwig - "WHAT, NEW H2 DESIGN? BIGGER YOU SAY!?"
worker - "... guys?"
bigwig - "GET RID OF THE SEDANS I WANT H2'S EVERYWHERE!!"
worker - "i hate you all.."
bigwig - "I EAT $8,000 DOLLARS FOR BREAKFAST AND $10,000 FOR LUNCH!"

The current Wired has an interview with the VP of product development at GM, and specifically talks about their hydrogen plans. Basically, they think Toyota and them are missing the 'big picture' in pushing hybrids, since hybrids are still reliant on petroluem-based fuel. But they also realize that they won't have a viable/affordable hydrogen powered car for sale for several years.

I'm gonna go with Toyota's and Honda's plan. And it's not like Toy and Honda aren't doing R&D on the same thing.

Sounds like he is missing something. Toyota is making a killing with thier hybrid cars and GM cant stop loosing money.

I thought Toyota lost money on every hybrid it sold. Maybe I'm thinking of something else.

I didn't say GM isn't going to sell a Hybrid. They mentioned that's just around the corner. The key point was that hydrogen is a LONG TERM solution, hybrids are merely a stop-gap based on a finite resource... There's many ways to make hydrogen.

Toyota's profit drive continues
Toyota Prius
Toyota's dual-fuel Prius hybrid is proving popular
Profits at Japanese carmaker Toyota are rising despite pressure from a rising yen and more expensive raw materials.

The firm reported a net profit in the three months to December of 296.5bn yen ($2.85bn; £1.51bn), up 3.5% from 2003.

Toyota, the world's number two carmaker by sales, said revenue rose 5.9% with gains in market share worldwide.

Its fortunes contrast with those of US giants Ford and GM, whose profits are now dependent on their financing arms rather than the car sales themselves.

The difference between the three is starkest in their home markets.

Toyota now has 44% of car sales in Japan - as well as clocking up a 10% sales rise in the US and Europe during 2004.

But both Ford and GM saw sales at home flag despite efforts to pile on incentives. Ford is now offering a free Dell desktop computer with its new-model Focus, while GM has upped discounts by $1,000 on a flagship minivan model.

If methane fume was a viable fuel for cars, I'd be rich. *prrrrrrrt!*

BTW, I'm not going to go to bat for GM here. Someone merely asked what's up with their hydrogen program, and I said where to find more info. If you're looking for a debate, look elsewhere.
