So back in October before this thread got started and N7 integration really developed this well, I started my own project of putting a full blown PC in the car. Nearly 6 months later, all I have is a half-working project and frustration. I think I'm about to jump ship and do this myself, but I have some reservations, so here are my questions.

OBD-II - Those of you running it to your N7 for monitoring, does it lag? Are you using Bluetooth?

GPS - Are there any issues with reception?

Handsfree phone - I assume the best way to go about this is to squeeze a basic single-DIN head unit with bluetooth behind the N7 like some of you have done?

OBD2: Yes, using Bluetooth + Torque. No lag.
GPS: No reception issues whatsoever.
Handsfree: Best way I found is to pair your phone with the single-DIN head unit yes.

Nice, thanks man. I actually already had an OBDLink wired unit and did some USB OTG testing today. The N7 not only recognizes it, but immediately wants to launch DashCommand. It works surprisingly great.
I tried to fit a Pioneer head unit today. The faceplate was too big. Returning it tomorrow for something more shallow.

PSA - The newer Pioneer decks have ginormous volume knobs and press into the N7's back plate. I looked over the vast majority of the Pioneer offerings and they were similar. Went with a Sony this time.

back reading saw an alternate single din headunit so as not to lose FM reception and no need for amp on stock speakers. found an alternative which has a google app to act as the remote for the HU. your thoughts guys?

That looks kinda interesting but it doesn't look very powerful. I also hate JVC but that's beside the point.

Realistically I don't see a reason steering wheel control wouldn't be good enough so I'll stick to that personally.

Very clean install man! I just installed a double din pioneer head unit because I wanted a touch screen with bluetooth. I'm happy with it, but I would like more of a media server ability in my car. I never once thought about this! My galaxy tab might have a new home...

I have a Pioneer DEH-P8400BH installed behind mine and it fits fine. Just need to make sure you don't have a bundle of wires stopping it from going back into the dash. There's plenty of room in there.

Ran into a stupid issue today. My N7 ran out of battery last night, and when I started the car it powered on as planned with the fastboot mod, but all it did was get stuck in an endless power-off and back on boot cycle. I suspect it's my USB OBD unit drawing a lot of initial power and CPU resources and spike bogging the battery back down.

Only wires in the back of it were from the head unit itself, so not able to be moved.

message addressed to ppl who actually did the mod:

you guys think it would be possible to "slot" the trim for sliding the tablet in and out? (from the top)

I am aware you'd not be able to have it plugged in and charging tho...
Would need to pair the tablet to the car using bluetooth only.

I'm trying to evaluate if I want to do this or not. If I do, it'll be using an iPad mini, which I do not necessarily want to fit in the dash forever hehe...

You could do this by modding the bezel, I think it can be done without cutting into the dash. If you cut along the seam lines of the bezel then inward towards the radio opening I could imagine making a top part that snaps on/off giving access to the top of the tablet. It would be close though. With a iPad mini it might be easer since it is slimmer than the N7.

You would need to do some measuring and prototyping though.

Thanks, I'll look into it.

Also I just contacted those guys about their product
https://shop.soundmanca.com/ipad-min...-pending/dp/16

I asked them about dimensions in order to see if I would be able to fit this thing instead. Could be really sweet.

Result in a VW: https://www.youtube.com/watch?featur...ZkgNG-s#t=548s

edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCXJIjxvPNE that would be even better. if possible. I'll investigate.

Have those of you with charging issues ever thought about just using one of these?

http://www.zagg.com/accessories/zagg...p?default=6000

This one is expensive but the quickest I could find on the internet (I have a similar one that I paid $30 for).

Basically just plug it in and leave it overnight to charge your device when it isn't receiving charge from the car. You could also leave it plugged in to the tablet and leave it inside the glovebox. That way it keeps your tablet always charged until the charger's battery runs out. Then you take the charger out and plug it in overnight. This way you cycle your tablet's battery less.

Yikes I didn't realize the N7 wants 2 amps...that is a lot. This one "says it works".

I did this mod but went with a different method mounting it. My main goal was making this extremely easy to remove since I plan on using the tablet a lot out side of the car as well as in the car. Ended up getting the Scosche SU2027 to decrease the size of the hole left by removing the stock Nav Unit. Mounted the snap on back case with double sided industrial velcro (very strong).

Here are some pics:
Without the Schosche SU2027 (looks like crap):

After installing the Schosche:

Side view (need to trim the velcro)
