Interested in 1 DIN OBD-II Display?
Don't know if this is the right place to post this; so excuse me if there is a more appropriate section.
I plan on making an OBD-II module using the ELM OBD-II decoder for ISO vehicles. Pretty much this unit would fit in the single din are under my stereo. There would be a backlit display with two menu buttons to navigate through sensor readings. This module would display all OBD-II sensor readings on the 2x24 display; like MPH, RPM, Engine Temp, etc... and any trouble codes. I also plan on adding an accelerometer to the unit. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas as to presentation of the data or even if anyone might be interesting in a unit like this; or does one already exist.

i'd be interested.
maybe a post if FFI would be more helpful something with a grrn backlight to match the WRX would be good too. |

That one looks pretty much like what I was going for... L295 is that Euros? Im thinking I could make mine for $200 for the parts using rapid prototyping components. It would also be totally customizable. Adding a couple relays that would engage/disengage based on sensor readings seems like a good idea... kinda like their intercooler sprayer enable...
I think I'll still make one and see if I can do it for less then them. I'll post pics once I get the DIN pocket, LCD, and microcontroller put together. Once I get the ELM controller then I can start programming it. |

and make sure its readable in sunlight! i saw one of those s.e.c.s unit on a friends car and couldn't see for swat what the readings are!

I'll Definately put brightness and contrast knobs on the front. I'll also have select and enter buttons. If I have any extra output pins on the micro ill connect them to 5v relays capable of switching 50volts. And have those come out to a connecter. It might be difficult getting the ability to tell it to switch the relay based on RPM etc... You'd need a keypad for that and I don't think there is enough space.. I plan on starting to put it together tomorrow - I'll put some pics up

Here are two examples of what the sensor readings and Intro screen will look like. The display shown is a little too big for the single DIN opening but I have another smaller 20x4 on the way. |

If you can get a WIDE variety of stuff to display on that and still keep in the $200 range I bet you'd sell a ton of em! I know I'd buy one... Oh, and make the install easy...
Here's an idea, you could grab one of those pass-through harnesses that the OEM subwoofer uses so that you could power the unit via the radio harness.... |

Once I get a set way to mount this into a DIN pocket with a plexiglass front, all that would be needed is a cable to the OBD-II port on any OBD ISO compatible car and 12v and ground from the radio harness. I'd probably have to put a 12v regulator in there to make sure it gets nice clean power.
Tomorrow Ill pull out my DIN pocket and see if I can rig something up real quick just to see how it looks. |

Also, it would be able to display any sensor available with OBD-II and trouble codes (not interpreted though - like code 0303 Plug 5 misfire). There is 32kb on the EEPROM for the micro im using, that should be enough for all sensors with little descriptions. Maybe even graphic bars...

I am very interested in this. Do you know or is there already a thread which shows the supported parameters a WRX will let you monitor.
Another option I have been looking into is a Palm OBD scan tool. |

Also you will have the option of setting which ones to cycle through and also view just one at a time and press the select button to cycle or enter to get the menu. The only problem I have right now is finding a cheap way to get 5 volts from the 12 volts provided in the OBD II cable. The ELM module has its own DC-DC converter, but it only provides enough current for itself. The Micro and LCD draw atleast 250ma on their own. It works - but it looks like spaghetti now. |

Also, once it is figured out how to best enclose everything, there would only be one wire coming out (the OBD-II Cable) and this would plug into the OBD-II port of the car. The DIN unit could then pull all its power from the cable. (Only 400mA or so).
One problem, however would be that there is no static protection. It could be an issue a person plugs it in and out alot in dry weather. Personally, I don't think it would be much of an issue. However, the ELM module does cost $89. |

Would it help to run the power through a seperate relay? Anyway, you sound like you have more electronics-smarts than I do, but I like your plans so far... Too bad you live so far away. I'd like to see it in person. And does it measure voltage too? The one thing I hate about subaru is that there is no voltmeter...

Well When I finally get it put together and installed Ill make a video of it and post the link. Thats almost like in person. As to a voltage sensor, I dont think there is one available in the OBD_II readings. I'll check on it and see if Subaru has a special code for that. So far, Im only using the standard codes...

well, that would be cheaper than the subaru gauge pack and have more features if it did cover voltage too. Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing more when you do get it on video...

Another possibility I might try is the following
http://www.decadenet.com/bob3/B3screenshot1.jpg This module allows you to overlay text on a video screen. So if you have a LCD Video display you can overlay the OBD-II reading on it. It support 680 characters per screen so there could potentially be alot more information displayed at a time. I don't have an LCD in my car though so odds are this will be on the back burner till next year when I can afford one. The video overlay module is $99. Right now I have a working "prototype" that communicates with the car - but the numbers are off. Once I get this fixed I'll post the"working" video. Its still a jumble of wires and hasn't been mounted in a DIN enclosure. I think the Video overlay module might motivate me to buy an LCD for my car.. That would definately be better than a character LCD. The overlay lets you put the text on top of an existing video feed. Pretty neat. http://www.decadenet.com/ |

For now I decided to go with the following as an LCD Display and Button Entry

Don't know if anyone is interested for another update but here goes. I got all sensor readings working. Im having trouble with the Trouble Codes however. Some of the sensor readings, it turns out, on the Subaru WRX aren't there. Like some of the Oxygen Sensors they get NO DATA. I'm looking into getting more Sensor readings that are Subaru WRX specific.
I will add the ability to monitor the cars voltage, and the 2g Accelerometer. These will both be displayed as Sensor Readings. In addition to the OBD-II cable you will need to provide a switched power lead from something like your stereo. It turns out the 12 volts from the OBD-II cable is always on. So the connections will be OBD_II cable and 12 volt switched. The ground will still be taken from the OBD-II cable. I guarantee I will have a working demonstration Installed in the car by Friday August 22. It may not have the fancy face yet but it WILL work. I'm starting to get excited - Ive been spending all my spare time working on this. |

I'm VERY interested.
I had thought for you thought. The STI comes with a blank plate, instead of a radio, that matches the silver trim in the WRX. Could you possible get these plates and cut out an opening for the screen so that when mounted it matches the dash color? |

If someone is good at cutting a nice finished rectangle Im sure you could easily attach the display to the back. You would also need two holes for the buttons, unless you want it to just be in scan mode. Korpse, Im using the altera chip with a basic interpreter to make the programming easier. It has 32kEEPROM so you can put a good amount of functionality in it. Except the trouble code lookups those would need another 128k at least. Oh well maybe later. The OBD-II protocol breakdown is at http://www.obddiagnostics.com/obdinfo/info.html if you want to look. Its mostly learn by example. Its not TOO bad after you look at it for a bit. KwyJibo, Yeah I could put a piezo buzzer or an LED for a shift light. But, the scan rate that it would get the RPM is like 4 times a second. If that is a quick enough update then that would work, Maybe you could account for the lag by setting the RPM a little lower so that by the time you get to the actual RPM (0.25 seconds later) The light will come on. Also, the Matrix Orbital Setup came in, BUT!!! It didn't come with the display. I just wrote the guys at HVWTech.com in Canada about it. I hope they dont try to screw me. I'll still be able to put it together it just wont look as sharp. |
