Volvo C30 + R-Design + Polestar performance tune --> here is your Golf GTI rival.
But, Volvo priced the whole thing too darn high (plus the C30 could stand to lose a few pounds as well). |

C30 never was given any attention. It needed a little bit of help and would have been a great "hot hatch", but Volvo fell short. Probably going to happen again.

Better have an awesome Manual transmission to back up that "breathtaking" design... Seems every volvo I've ever took a liking to was never available with a real transmission

I'd love to see a Golf-sized sedan with a small turbo motor, a manual transmission, firm chassis tuning, and Volvo quiet/refinement for $25,000.
It'll probably end up with an automatic only transmission and cost $33k, but I can dream. |

$25k is asking quite a bit of Volvo.
I wish the C30 was a better package. It could've been in my driveway. |

The C30 always turns my head every single time I see it run down the road. EVERY TIME.
I do wish they would have pushed it a bit harder to get it into the hands of more people. I still say that the seats in the S60R are some of the best seats in the business for comfort. |

I would consider it for a runabout/commuter. 3+ inches of snow this morning, YES, on May Second... and 6 FWD cars, 2 RWD cars/trucks, and semi in the ditch before 7:30 am. Most of them... were facing backwards to the flow of traffic because the 40+mph cross wind was breaking rear traction, and spinning the cars out on the slick surface. It is for days like today that I own AWD cars, with good tires. Effective even at 30-40mph max speed, with slow and steady driving techniques. It isn't about being an idiot and speeding in bad road conditions. almost no plows on the road today... most municipal trucks have been de-winterized, and the plows removed for summer dump truck duty, and the heavy wet slushy snow is very slick and slimy/sticky. Today is the reason why I want an AWD coupe... because I would have had a much more difficult, and potentially damage-inducing commute in the Miata, or a Mustang, or a Genesis, or even other FWD coupes. Snow tires are usually off the cars by May, just as the plows are off the trucks. Even if it is rare for May, October through April isn't as rare around here for flash weather changes. |

But I kind of see your point. Volvo's in a funny place, being a European non-luxury brand. VW is sort of in the similar situation, but even with their economy of scale it's clear they think the only way to compete in the US is to move downmarket by producing lower quality, bigger cars locally. Volvo seemed to be trying to move upmarket instead, which wasn't really working out. Saab died trying that, as we all know. I don't know what they can do to be competitive in the long run. Apparently people either buy a sensible mainstream car, or pay twice as much for a full on luxury car. And with the increasing level of quality and technology for mainstream cars, the in-between place for premium priced brand without the badge appeal will only get smaller. When the new Fusion can be equipped with just about every fancy option you can find in a luxury car, what's the point of getting a Volvo that costs more, still FWD based with similar driving experience, and lacks a real luxury badge appeal? |

I had an '08 C30 and that was an absolutely wonderful car. Quick, quiet, predictable handling for FWD, the best drivers seat I've had in over 20 cars and it was phenomenal in the snow (with Dunlop Wintersport 3D) as well as being super safe. I got t-boned right on the drivers door/b pillar and the window didn't even break but the seat rails tore out of the floor when the car bent. Laminated side glass FTW!
Yes it was a bit more expensive than some of the other cars in its class but it was so much more pleasant to be in that it was tough to consider it in the same class. It isn't about being a hot hatch it's about being a really nice, somewhat practical small car. If I had wanted another FWD car there would still be one in my driveway. Oh yeah, it is still one of the best looking cars of the last 20 years. |
