Premium?
Has anybody tried calculating these numbers while running premium fuel?
I'd be interested to see the results. I get much better economy in my Cadillac when running premium fuel, and it made sense monetarily. Not to mention the seat-of-the-pants feel! Still waiting on my Imp, or I'd try it myself...

With my last car, I got another ~2 MPG from running premium. It wasn't enough to offset the extra cost though (premium is like 40 cents a gallon more than regular in my area). Still, if the car shows any improvement running premium, I will use it for long highway trips since it can reduce the number of stops. |

ah... I just learned this
"This is a lame and well-worn excuse. The fact is that fuel specs in Canada, unlike the US, don't change with the season." (http://www.canadianbusiness.com/arti...tre-in-ontario) So, no summer/winter blend for Canadian eh?! |

Also yeah, being a former Canadian, as soon as the CAD tanks and gets back to late 90s levels (if that ever happens!) I'll be moving back from the US for the sole reason of healthcare - it is a downright scary system down here. |

new Impreza owner here...only 30 miles (by me) on the dial, but i have already seen what thom mentioned before:
when warmed up, this car gets great mileage. for mixed driving yesterday from the dealer (with a 5 hour pause at work where it cooled down some, i'm sure), i got 32.5 mpg which sort of blew me away. but this morning, for my commute to the train station of in town driving, i saw that mileage plummet quickly, and the 4 mi drive dropped my average to 30.6 mpg, and most of that drop occurred during the first 3 miles of my 4 mile drive. my back of the envelope calc suggests i got a low 22 mpg for the drive this morning. and this is in a warm climate of CA where it was 49 oF outside according to the car thermometer and it was garaged overnight. i really dont' want to try leaving the car idling in the garage to boost my fuel economy as some people have suggested, but man, the mileage is certainly going to be affected by short trips from a cold start. |

Suspected issue with "TCM" is reason for low MPG?
Hi everyone,
I just called my dealership to discuss the low MPG I am still getting with my Impreza Sport. Last weekend I drove on an extended freeway trip for the first time and while the MPG was better it was still low (about 32-33 for a 220 roundtrip on pretty flat roads, avg speed 60 mph). Better but still on the low end for a purely freeway trip. Overall though I am still looking at about 20.9 for my combined city / some highway driving (70/30) so not good at all. When I spoke with the service guy at my dealership he told me that they are getting slammed with calls about the mpg on the 2012 Impreza. He said about 1-2 per day (which he indicated is a lot). He told me that he thinks there is an issue, even their sales guys who have the Imprezas are bringing this up (the comment was from the sales guys that the cars shifting patterns seems odd). The service guy even mentioned that there are Outbacks getting better MPG which shouldn't happen for a car that is 500 pounds more and has a bigger engine. He thinks it's an issue in the transmission and that Subaru might have to address this with a software update for the "TCM' (Transmission computer module?). Anyway bottom line is he has an email into SOA (local rep) and asked me to call back in a week for an update. I know some people are getting exactly the MPG that they should be getting so it may not impact all cars but clearly there seems to be a growing pool of data to suggest that something is wrong with some Imprezas. I'll keep y'all posted |

i apologize: i know i read about this somewhere but my search forum skills are alluding me...
What does each "tick" mark represent on the MPG/mileage gauge under the speedometer? i know dead center is the current trip average, but is it 1 mpg per tick? more? thanks! |

thanks for sharing. there does seem to be a very wide range of mileages being cited out there. i know people drive differently, but the variability is a bit larger than i should be, IMHO.
seaflipper: with your 20.9 combined, does that involve a lot of short trips/drives where the car is starting from "cold." how long is your average drive/trip? Quote:

I am driving 1200 miles over Easter weekend. My car already have 6500 miles on it so break in is over. If I don't get ~36 MPG (or above) with conservative driving, slow speeds, cruise control and long expanses of open highway, I will plan to get another car this fall. Already had my first oil change as well. Also I am not surprised that people with the older 2.5L cars are reporting better MPGs. I can easily beat EPA number in a 2004 Outback with the ancient 2.5L EJ engine under the hood. |

I certainly think my commute is such that my MPG would be on the low end, I understand the cold start issue and I know city driving impacts MPG. So do I expect to get 30 combined on my partial city partial highway drive? No. But 20.9 is just not hitting it, especially since I have tried to be eco friendly - I have done a couple tanks in super conservative no lead footed ease the gas pedal, keep the eco-meter above nuetral as much as possible AND I have done one tank as a lead footed maniac not worrying about the eco-meter at all and the difference in MPG? Not much, lead footed got me .2 mpg worse than eco-friendly! |

If you drive 55-60......all flat highway.......you may see mid 30s is my guess......let us know how you do......for me the car fits the bill.....and Im very happy with my MPG as Im up from averaging around 26 in my 04 Chevy with 200K on it......also have an 11 Outback Prem.....but I get around 26-28 average on it......but MPGs was secondary to me.....with AWD the primary reason for purchase... |

The car I had before the Impreza was larger, more powerful, drove better, and could easily do low to mid 30s for MPG on long trips. That was rated 30 MPG HWY. The 36 MPG + AWD sold me on the Impreza. I will post up something when I get back from my trip. |

I realize what your expectations are..but also realize that its EPA testing standards that established the MPG range not necessarily Subaru.....with emphasis on the word range......I would bet at this point based on your expectations above that you will be trading the Impreza in the fall......
for me it meets my expectation.....is my daily driver...but at the same time is the third car sitting in the garage along with the 11 Outback and an 09 Cadillac CTS.....so my MPG range varies greatly between the three vehicles......I can get 30 MPG in my V-6 CTS on some extended hwy trips over 400 miles, however since its rear wheel drive....its lousy in even the smallest amount of snow...thus my other two AWD vehicles......the outback is my wifes daily driver..... |

When I trade my car in, I would be getting a Legacy, with a 6 speed. I don't think the MPG hit is nearly as severe as the window stickers would lead people to believe, and I would much rather have the bigger car. |

I just finished a roadtrip of Philly to Detroit. Calculated MPG of 26. Spent most of the trip at 70-85 MPH bouncing between 5th and 6th on the CVT.
