Default Mach V Dan vs. Tarzan Yamada..who wins???

So, the Mach V crew was at GT Live at VIR and did some karting, courtesy of the fine folks at Subaru of America's Southeast Region. Anyway, we're all suited up and sitting in our karts when "Tarzan" Yamada, famous pro driver/TV personality/wacky picture poser shows up, helmet in hand. He hops in the last car in the grid...and we're off!

Perhaps because of my light weight, or maybe because I randomly got a decent kart, I managed to be in front for much of the session. But as the final laps counted down, two karts were breathing down my neck. One was Mach V friend Larry, who used a combination of clever driving and brute force to get by me. (Drat!) The other was Yamada-san! I think I was saved by the checkered flag, but Larry finished first, I was second, and the famous Tarzan was third.

Of course, Tarzan did have to drive through the entire pack to get to me. And he DID have the fastest single lap of the whole heat. And I'm certain that if there was even one more lap, I would have lost another place.

But it made for good talk at the barbecue that night.

Mach V Dan leading Larry and Tarzan

Yamada-san was very gracious and said he had a lot of fun in the karts.

heck yeah, Yamada is a funny guy most times.
You see it on his face tho, that i think he's getting tired of showing off the whole act that made him so popular when he was younger. Hard life of a celebrity i suppose.

my "hanging with Yamada-san" photo, also courtesy of GT-Live as well...

The kart track at VIR is awesome! A number of Spec Miata drivers rented it out for a double race weekend in May, it was a great time!

Great story!

Glad you guys enjoyed the karting event, and I'm glad Subaru and the dealers Flow & Folger stepped up to make that stuff happen.

Now for my Tarzan story.... hehe...

First - I must apologize to any innocent kart persons who may have been slightly rough-housed in my run to take down Tarzan.

Tarzan showed up for the last Subaru karting session on Sunday - Grided 4 spots ahead of me when we got ready to run. I showed no mercy from the start, passing two karts on the way out of the pits. I knew I had to get close to him early if I wanted to get a pass on him. I managed to fight by the last person between Tarzan and I about 1/2 a lap in. Now I have him in my sights! He looks back, sees me, and really starts wheeling the kart. I was able to stick my nose in on several corners for a lap or two, but could never quite get by him. Finally I take a shot at an inside move with lots of curb, and a little bit of tire wall. This move doesn't get me past him, but gives me enough momentum to run the inside on him coming onto the front straight. We came onto the front straight with our karts locked together, both of us bouncing like mad to get the karts speed up. I managed to get clean of him by turn 2, and then proceeded to drive my heart out to put some distance on him. I'm happy to report, I caught, passed and expanded my lead over Tarzan during our session.

(For what it's worth - Steven Kornhaus managed to beat Tarzan's time on the kart track Saturday by 8/10ths of a second!)

Tarzan ran a 49.5, I ran a 48.4. I was in the same race as Pleiades, and it was so much fun! I started 6th I think, and finished 1st!

Damn, I think I ran a 49 flat on Saturday. Tarzan was in the group ahead of us though.

There was a lot of variance in the karts. The tires suffer a lot; many blew tires during the event. My second round, on Sunday, I had a kart that was showing cord on the front tire. As a result it had no front grip, and I was sloooow.

At least it wasn't the kart with the duct-taped gas tank!

#5 was pretty quick as well. FWIW, During the saturday session that Tarzan ran, they installed a new front left tire just before he went out. This would have been a major advantage on this course, as 4 of the most critical coners are right handers.

Yeah. #6 was ok, but had no grip on the off camber right hand turn. I was using the same line I did in #5 and #7 and it couldnt hold it, just pushed out. THe tires were crap

I think I had #8, and it was like glue all over the track. I wasnt even lifting in the last turn at the back stretch. I was bouncing over every gator however

That Last session I ran when you me and the other Guy( sorry cant remember your name) we pushing and bump drafting each other each other around the whole time. I lost a tire and had to finish the last lap with no front left tire.

I had a blast...shifter kart is coming up with me next time. I think maybe machV should get into the kart business

I was in front of Dan for about 3/4's of the first lap until he decided to pull his "Tony Stewart" stunt on me......

I heard Steven Rankins was way faster... and he outweighs you, Dan, by at least 100 lbs.

In other words, Tarzan is slow. Just like he was last year.

I'm not sure about lap time for lap time, there were quite a few people that were running the same lap times I did - Kornhaus was actually the fastest lap I saw out of the Subie group between both days - of course he easily has 120lbs on me! The part that made me most happy was actually coming from behind and passing Tarzan.

I placed first on the third session on sunday. Right before tarzan came so i did not get to kart with him. Me and another subie enthusiast(yellow helmet) were neck and neck but i got out in first at the last turn. The mach V crew was also in my group.
