Default Main bearing choices

Has anyone on here used Clevite 77 bearings for EJ257? I am in process of building a motor for my 06 Sti and need to get some main bearings. Car is around 400whp and this build wont see much more than that. Motor being built is OEM crank and rods with Mahle power pack pistons.

My choices are
1. OEM bearings and they will run me around $130 with no shipping

2. Clevite 77 bearings which are same part number as Mahle bearings that I have been finding. Different part number than old Mahle Vandervell bearings. Not sure if quality of these are good and I would like to know if any engine builders have used them with good results. ~$50 + shipping

3. ACL bearings, Im kinda trying to stay away from them since I have read quality had went down and they are around $90+ shipping and that would put them around same price as set of OEM bearings.

I've heard ACLs had an issue with clearance consistency. Kings can take a massive amount of detonation from what I've seen as well.

^^^me too the acl rod brgs have been good but the mains are all over the board in consistancy.

I have read the same info about ACL, thats one reason Im trying to stay away from them.

I have read good things about Kings, and looking at there website it shows they try to keep them consistant.

Have you guys been running the standard or extra oil clearance bearings. Looking to set my main clearance around 0.0012". Should standard set get me in ball park?

I recently built a new ej25 and had originally ordered clevite main and rod bearings. Installed the clevites in the block and rods to check clearances and they were all over the place, very inconsistent. Decided to order all acl race bearings. Main clearances specd out at with only .0003 variance, rods were all exactly .0021 clearance. 1300 miles later and they are doing perfect, no metal on my drain plug at the 1000 mile oil change. Also the mains I used were std, rods were hx's.

i built a couple motors with king bearings and wasnt thrilled at the prep work i had to do to them including deburring to make them the same quality as a ACL bearing. If the customer is doing it themselves ive been suggesting Cosworth as they are pretty close to on the money. if im doing it i use ACL both h and hx. Bearings is not somewhere to cut corners... for the extra 40 bucks that the cosworth ones run they seem to check them twice before sending them out. just my 2 cents.

I've already ordered and got a set of the kings since I have heard pretty much all good things about them.

For what I read in past IIRC Cosworth bearing are made by ACL.

Yes they are made by ACL but cosworth checks them over before they send them out. My cosworth/ACL bearings were spot on the first try which to me is worth the extra 40 bucks to not have my motor apart for another week waiting for more bearings to show up.

All my builds and friends builds have been ACL and never had issues with them. Clevite; Ive had a spun bearing under 200 miles on a fresh shortblock build and never used them again.. may have been a fluke incident but spun a rod bearing on break in. Whats the difference between Kings and ACL's?
