Thumbs up Clark Turner (merged thread)

I don't see an open thread in this section, so I thought I'd throw in my opinion of Clark Turner and his customer mail order protune maps.

I am only running a stage 1 map, since I am still reluctant to remove any emissions equipment till my warranty is up (well, and $$$). I was initially pleased with the OTS Cobb stage 1 map, but decided to bite the bullet and get a protune map from Clark.

I hear 99% good stuff about the guy's work, other than a couple of random threads where things seem to have been resolved behind the scenes or a couple of guys never gave him a chance to fix a mistake, so I went ahead with him.

So after a paypal payment and email the same day I had his map. I tooled around a bit for a day or so after installing per instructions, and the difference is night and day between his map and Cobb's. I noticed that boost wasn't quite hitting his target, so he revised the map and sent it back to me. Now I'm hitting 15psi give or take .7 depending on the situation and there is so much more power between 2000-5000 rpm that my car is extremely driveable in situations where it wasn't before, and overall is just a real joy to drive again.

His customer service gets and A, his map get's an A, and overall I would recommend him to anyone who either doesn't want to take the time to get a tune or can't get to a tuner locally. (I would fall under the first category).

Don't go to Clark for anything beyond a Stage 1 map and don't expect quick responses.

Do expect to be thrown under the bus and blamed for anything that is not your fault or you have no knowlege of or control over.

If you have a beyond Stage 1 setup, you had better have time, patience, money, alternate transportation and low expectations. If you have all of these, go ahead and email Clark.

Here is my experience.

At first I was really pleased. I purchased a stage 1 map for my 08 WRX on 7/29/08 and everything went smooth. The guy was nice, delivered fast and the car ran great.

Then I went stage 2. Clark is fast to take the money but extremely slow with support, if he supports you at all. When it came to taking the money, he accepted my PayPal payment in four hours and emailed the map right away. I gave him my list of mods which included just a downpipe and SPT CBE. This was on 10/24/08.

I was immediately overboosting and hitting the fuel cut. I called several times and got a voicemail each time. This was on 10/25/08. I requested either a phone call back or even a text message because I knew he was usually very busy.

After five days of no response, I decided to email. This was on 10/30/08. Three days after that (eight days after being ignored), I went back to stage 1. The other stage 2 OTS maps were not as smooth as Clark's stage 1. I didn't think Clark would ever respond and if he ever did, how long would I have to wait between sending maps and logs back and forth?

The next day (Nine days after my first request for assistance) Clark emails me and wants the map back to fix it.

I politely told him that I was going back to stage 1 and that I didn't think I'd ever hear back form him. I said I was not happy with the stage 2 map or the service. I didn't even ask for my money back because I knew he wouldn't give it back. I knew he would want to tweek the map and have me put my downpipe back on. I was tired of messing with it and didn't have the time or patience to mess with it. I was essentially quietly cutting my losses and just going to stay content with the nice Stage 1 map.

I thought that was the end of it, but then Clark emails me explaining that his Grandfather had to have open heart surgery and he had to drive to Nevada in the middle of the night and that all I care about is how my car runs. (how this took nine days I'm still not sure)

The part that upset me the most was Clark making me out to be a jerk. I had no idea what was going on in his personal life. Clark was making me out to be the bad guy.... I guess to make him feel better about keeping my money for crappy service and a crappy product.

I'm sure there will be people posting up saying Clark is great and they haven't had any problems with him. I wish I could be one of them. I'm sure a majority of people who use Clark's service will be content.

I just want people to know that if you use Clark's "services", there is a chance you will get screwed. That's business, I guess.

I was displeased with my experiences with Clark. I cannot comment on his maps as I didn't recieve one. Apparently he has WAY too much going on at once. Hopefully anyone else has a good experience with him.

THe issue here has nothing to do with my ability to tune your simple setup. THe issue here is that you where not patient. It was not my fault that I had to leave town because of my family. When family calls, I drop everything and I go. When My mom called me in tears asking for us to be there, I jumped in the car and left that moment.

To you, Your car is the most important thing to you. My family is the most imporant thing to me. When I got back, you had already made your mind that you did not want me to adjust your map and that you wanted a refund.

I am sorry you feel the way you do. People are very happy with me with all types of setups. Sorry you feel the way you do and sorry I could not answer every email and call instantly.

I purchased Stage 2 map from Clark. He emailed me the maps few hours after I sent the payment. Since I flashed the map, the car idles very smooth, pulls harder, and feels great overall. Very happy with the purchase and would recommend Clark to anyone on the budget and to those who would otherwise have to drive 3+ hours to get tuned by a respectable tuner.

Clark
See what I mean. Morphing facts into self satisfying fiction. That's Clark.

My favorite part is where he deduces I care more about my car than my family..... because I was seeking help from him on his product while he was dealing with a family emergency. (A family emergency I was unaware of at the time). Yeah, that makes sense.

I also love the part where Clark actually says I wasn't patient enough. NINE DAYS with no response and I'm impatient? Wow.

I called and left a voice mail and waited five days before trying an alternative form of communication (even though Clark said phone was the best). It wasn't until I sent an email and waited three more days that I decided I wasn't happy with the response time. Clark took NINE DAYS to respond. Does that sound like I was being impatient to you?

And Clark, I'm sorry your Grandfather was ill and I wish him a speedy recovery. I love the way you demonstrate your family care by using your Grandfather as an excuse for not getting work done. Classy. I looked in your thread and you didn't have any posting about going out of town until 10/29 and you were back a few days later. This accounts for maybe one third of the time you ignored me. I suspect the other two thirds of the time spent ignoring me is because you were too busy. You're in over your head. You're disorganized and flustered. That's a great problem to have. Good for you.... bad for me.

And as I said before, I was willing to just let this go until you accused me of being a jerk. I found it offensive and decided to let people know who the real jerk was.

If you do respond, please stick to the facts and leave your poor Grandfather out of it.

I got a map of clark's and my car runs a whole lot smoother and boost hits harder now, I can't fault him for putting family first, I would have done the same.

Clark FTW!

I think its now clear to everyone what happend with this transaction. Sorry, I could not get to you in your time restraints.

Hella STI,

THanks for the comments man. Enjoy the car! I am partial to bugeyes and with that map and the tall 5mt gears, you will suprise alot of STI;s!

KB, Thanks to you for the comments man! I know your car is strong!

Alot of people are now running mid to high 12s on my 06 and 07 STG2 map! It took alot of time to get the Throttle and cams mapped the way I wanted. Its always a good thing when the stg2 WRX is consistantly beating STG2 STIs at the strip!

If anyone needs anything, Just let me know, I will be in the office all day today and most days throughout the week.

I must say I've emailed Clark twice over the period of about a month and never got a response. Could be communication break down somewhere, but either way I haven't heard back from Clark.

Another happy customer here. Clark's map is great, it's a lot more powerful than the Cobb stage2 OTS map and SO much smoother. Clark also responded to all my emails very quickly and provided me with several map revisions until my car was running perfect. I definitely recommend his service.

Happy Customer here.

Clark has been great about communicating, updating my map from datalogs, and the performance on the VF43 is nothing less than great.

I decided I needed a tune because my car had been pinging lightly with the Cobb OTS map, and after hearing so much about gaining power from a ProTune since Cobb's were conservative. I'm the skeptical type, especially when you are forced to trust someone else to do the work and you don't know what they're doing, so my only goal in getting a map was to get rid of the pinging and to keep my motor happy.

I went with Clark after a lot of research on the different online tuners since there aren't any tuners within a few hundred miles of me, and I have to say that I am very happy with the work and time he put into tweaking it for me. I chose him over the others because first off he reviews logs and tweaks the map to your car. Secondly, although there were several negative reviews of him that I could find, it seemed reasonable to believe that it was an issue of patience in the buyers as opposed to Clark's quality of work. To balance the few negatives, there were many positive reviews so I believed it to be a safe bet to make.

Taking into account that Clark is one person who is working on many different maps at once, he was very prompt to get back to me (within 20 minutes - 1.5 days) which I think is completely reasonable for something that isn't a life or death situation. I can see how someone would get frustrated waiting a few days for a response, but again he is one person who isn't working in a sweat shop, and it is not a life or death situation.

Today, my car runs with 0 pinging, no negative KC, a noticeable power gain (which I am quite happy with), and I no longer fear putting the pedal down because the marbles in the tin can are gone!

I would absolutely recommend Clark, and would look to him for another tune in the future. My advice for contacting him is to be patient since he has so many people knocking on his proverbial door, keep your message clear and concise (bulleted list), and to send ONE message at a time. If you bombard his inbox with emails, it will take longer for everyone to get a response.

Thanks Clark!

Talking Two days, Three revisions, Done.

Very happy customer here. The Cobb OTS was o.k. but I knew there was room for improvement. The closest Tuner is 200+ miles for me, so that wasn't really an option. I bought a stg2 tune from Clark and I have to say I am impressed. My car idles smooth and the power strong and steady. It feels like a different car. My car is very driveable in town and on the highway. He also answered a few questions I had, very professional. I am looking forward to my next round of mods and tuning.
I had a great experience with Clark.
Thanks Man.

Talking Clark Turner

I just bught a protune map for my AP V2 from Clark Turner today online and he threw in a fuel economy map of his too, free of charge. The transaction went as smooth as anyone could have hoped. I emailed Clark earlier today and was promptly respond to with answers to my questions. Then, once the paypal went through it was like he was right there with you through the whole proccess of data logging and emailing the map and logs back to him so you truly get a custom tune. He will also keep tweaking it till its right with no extra cost on top of the initial cost of the map which was $150. As for the quality of his tunes, Clark was tuning suby's when he worked at Vivid Racing in Chandler, AZ when I first heard of him. I can say without a shadow of a doubt Clark Turner is THE man when it comes to tuning and Subaru's. So his tunes F***ing rock and I would recommend him to anyone and everyone in need of some sort of tuning. Thanks again Clark.

Very pleased with my Clark Turner e-tune. 02 WRX with headers/uppipe, turboback and Grimmspeed EBCS, felt a major difference from the Cobb ots map.

I totally agree. I had Cobb's stage 2 and it was ok, but what a huge difference with Clark's map!

The car is very, very smooooooth.... pulls nicely in all ranges. It is really a night and day difference between the OTS Cobb and Clark's.

To those who say they had issues getting in touch, I've had a totally different one.

Emailed Clark yesterday at about this time. He immediately responded, I sent over my specs and within about 20 minutes I had the maps to load (I got two, a 91 and 93 map).

Loaded them last night, logged this morning. Sent over the logs and got a response right away. Did another log, sent them over and I have my maps in place.

So 24 hours for the entire tune, and a great, very smooth, strong pulling stage 2 wrx!

I'm very pleased, and to top it off Clark was nice enough to throw in some extras for me.

I would absolutely recommend his maps!

Thanks Clark - Ed

Well, I have just received my second tune from Clark. Personally, I've been very happy with his response times. Usually I get an email back within a day, and sometimes within a half hour (even on weekends no less ). He's been very helpful, especially when I had a problem with the car for the first tune.

I'll definitely be going back to Clark for updated maps down the road. It's hard to beat them especially for the price.
