Default '11 WRX rough idle when coming to stop

Hi, my 2011 WRX has started hesitating a little bit when I'm coming to a stop. Just after I put the clutch in shift into neutral to come to a stop the RPMs dip to 500 or so and I can feel the stick shift vibrate a little. It feels almost like the car is going to stall for a split second and then the revs come back up to normal. Seems to be happening since the weather got colder.

Any ideas what might be causing this?

The car is bone stock. I've done the break-in and subsequent oil changes myself with Rotella T6. The last oil change was 11/06 but this behavior just started within the last week or so.

mine just started doing it with the colder temps as well. It's probably a rich condition caused by the cold, dense air?

Is the heat in "auto" mode? Try manually turning the A/C off, it might be running to defog/dry the air. If it stops in that case, you might have a failing compressor or a refrigerant leak.

The compressor should not be going out on such a new car... I think the stock tune could also be to blame, because I have not seen the problem even in some temps down below 20 deg F

The A/C compressor went out on my 2011 WRX with less than 2000 miles.

Subaru replaced it no questions asked.

Yeah, I use auto mode. I'll switch it to manual for a while and see if that clears things up. Thanks.

@JordanM9 - Regarding things that shouldn't happen to a brand new car, I've had the passenger side blinker and driver side daytime bulb blow already. So I'm willing to accept that anything could go wrong.

Did you have the car in defrost mode? The compressor only turns off on manual heat or vent settings.

I had it on manual heat at the floor setting and no defrost.

Yeah, it's not all the time for me either but it makes me feel like something isn't right. Ran like a top all spring/summer/fall and now notsomuch, so I feel like the cold has something to do with it.

Doesn't seem to matter if the engine is cold or fully up to temp.

My 08 has done that in the past except mine was sometimes during 75 degree weather and sometimes with 20 degrees. It didn't seem to matter to much. It worried me when it would do it because there is nothing you can do. The clutch is in and im stopped, you hit the gas to get the revs up but that doesn't help. Im glad to know im not the only one who this has happened to.

I had an issue like this on my 08 wrx. The tumbler valve generator had to be replaced. The master tech at the dealership knew what was wrong and said its common to have to replace them. You can thank the EPA for having to have them in the first place.

have had this problem since I've owned my 2011...happens randomly and is often the cause of a random stall (like when reversing out of a parking space, then shifting to first and starting to move). If the dips coincide with when you try to get rolling, it makes stalling very easy. It doesn't really bother me any more because I am now used to all of the shifting quirks of my car. I do recall seeing a thread a while ago on this same topic and having other people quote the TGVs as the issue as well.

I blew an email into my dealer last night to see if they had heard of this happening before now that it seems at least a few of us have had the problem. Probably won't hear back. Now maybe I'll call and ask about this tumbler valve generator.

I've read that this is normal behavior for all subarus in cold weather, heat on, etc.

My 2012 occasionally will dip at idle but all the times I've noticed it happening was with the air compressor on manual mode (i don't use auto). It doesn't bother me because of the infrequency. If it actually affected my drive, I'd be a little more concerned, or if my air didn't work....

This is pretty much what I have experienced (minus the actual stalling). When backing out of a parking spot, or pulling into my garage, the revs seem to dip almost to zero. I plan on asking about this when I go in for my next oil change.
Edit: forgot to mention that I can replicate the issue consistently, whether or not the a/c, defrost is on.

It's sounding more and more like it's common, but it didn't happen on my 2002 WRX (or any other car I've owned), although a lot could have changed since then at Subaru. Regardless, the car nearly stalling on a regular basis shouldn't be considered 'normal'. I can't see the engine basically choking itself regularly as a Good Thing™.

It effects my driving very much. I'm constantly anticipating it now, which is annoying. And I have to wait a beat every time it happens for it to sort itself out rather than proceeding. I admit I'm more of a rolling stop kind of guy, shoot me.

I've set up an appointment to have the car looked at on Thursday and I'll report back.

These low engine speed conditions are somewhat common on newer cars to lower emmissions at idle and similar situations. As long as the car doesn't stall, it's nothing to spend too much time on. The ECU is trying to keep the injectors off for as long as possible and doesn't turn them back on (idle is about 2.0-2.2mS) until a little later. Then as you sit there, the ECU is trying to run as lean as possible to save fuel. A rock solid idle is not something that is expected these days because most people have no idea what that tachometer means anyway.
