Somehow, I don't think it would be worth the effort, either cost-wise or weight-wise. The coolant only runs through the IACV, so it wouldn't seem like it would be terribly effective at cooling your intake charge. Good thought though, I could be wrong...

The one downside I've found is that I've had ice form on my throttle plate in the winter when I use my water/meth injection. I can tell, because the car will idle just a tad high after doing some pulls. If I let it sit long enough, the ice eventually melts and the plate closes fully.

Not a big deal, but probably worth mentioning.

A very important point crazymikie, if you're injecting anything pre-TB, I either wouldn't do this mod (unless you live in places it doesn't freeze) or put a T-valve on one side and cross-connect the lines with another T so that you can flip the valve and bypass the TB when its warm out.

good reason to put the nozzle in the plenum, eh?

It makes for a good project/time killer. I have a bump of washer pumps, fluid level sensors, and enough electrical components to do it without buying parts (except maybe a pressure sensor and tubes). Plus, if you do the IC sprayer and the TB at the same time...I dunno. Plus it'd be cool to say, "Oh,that light? That's for the TB cooling system"

Sounds like fun. If it works, I'll buy a pump from ya.

^^ I just went to the junkyard and picked them up for about $5. Float sensors were found mostly on "high end" (read: buick, chrysler) cars and some newer ones (junk yard near me has mostly mid 90's domestic crap) and were $1 from 1 guy (listed as misc) and the next day they charged me $5 for electrical components.

Maybe if the WRX manifold actually had a plenum I could put it in there

I'll see if I can fix that......

EDIT: 06grayrex, have you experienced the TB failure they spoke of on clubwrx with the spec v's?
No I have not experienced and TB failure as of yet, nor do I expect any.. One guy with a different make/model/year doesn't raise an alarm. Now if there were 80-100+ people that own WRX/STIs reporting TB failures due to icing because of bypassing the coolant line then I would reconsider.

What do all of these people think happens anyhow in the winter time when the car that has been sitting overnight and they start their cars and just drive off with out letting their cars warm up? The coolant is just above freezing and it takes while for the coolant to warm up and the TB is not icing up. So how is this any different?????...........WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!

It sound like this person got raped by the dealer because he could have bought the sensor if it failed and replaced it himself. I think the TB failing was just a coincidence because of a faulty designed of the TB sensor, and not because the coolant line being bypassed......

Nawh, not a dumb question, but was eventual.
One cap is the inlet, the other is the outlet; therefore, there is nothing to be leaked due to "BYPASSED" joining of the 2 disconnected hoses with the double barb coupling.

I would of used black caps to give it a more stock look but the red ones fit the best and really highlights the which ports are to be capped off.

yeah the caps are just to keep dirt/etc out of the (now empty) coolant passage in the throttle body. The coolant is no longer in there.

I did it last night and could tell a difference. Drove the car around yesterday, got out and put my hand on the intake manifold. I could just barely keep my hand on it so it was probably around 120-130 degrees. Did the mod after that, drove it this morning to work and checked it and it was just above ambient i.e. cool to the touch. I had the phenolic spacers in for both checks.

Granted, the ambient temp was probably 10-15 degrees different but with both (bypass + spacers) I'd say it makes a big difference. I'm just glad I found the source of the heat my manifold was getting, I couldn't figure out why the thing was still hot to the touch even with the spacers.

Glad to see you have seen good results also with this mod. I do not regret doing this mod at all. I may have to look at doing the phenolic spacers in the future, maybe when it's turbo up grade time.

Shucks, I guess I'll have to try this when I do my turbo swap this weekend.

For something so easily done (and reversed if need be), why not?

Do the bypass, then on the coldest day of the next winter, I want you to drive your car for 10 min, and stay completely out of boost, so that NO compressed air goes through it. Then stop, get out, and put your hand directly on your throttlebody and hold it there.

Then go to the emergency room to deal with the burns. Yes we have heard of throttle body icing. Its the IMAGINARY condition (on subbies) that people who dont put a lot of thought into the subject keep talking about. Even with no hot coolant or boost, the throttle body is directly bolted to the intake manifold. Both get VERY hot. Before anyone says "But it will freeze when you arent running, and when you come out to your car in the morning, the tbody will be frozen!"
Ok then explain what magical forces will make the coolant be hot enough (or even remotely warm ) after sitting all night to keep it from freezing

Here is the reality, I know the people who spout about things like tbody icing dont LIKE things like reality, but here it is. People have been doing this mod for years. YEARS. Not once, ever, has a subbie had the tbody ice up. Never. Not one.

Now, with phenolic spacers you will not get the leaving flesh stuck sizzling on the tbody effect, but you still are never going to ice up.

** This info does not apply to those using water injection. Although I find it almost impossible to believe that anyone with water/meth would have it happen, because meth is antifreeze. Unless they are running a way low***37; mix. If it was anyone but mikie that said it happened I would call them a liar. Since it WAS mikie, I just scratch my head in curiosity. Still not convinced and think its something else though.
