Default 02 03 bugeye WRX front end to 05 STi, Who has done this??

I have a white 05 STi with WRX hood, suppose I find some one in the NW that has an 02 or 03 bugeye WRX and wants to swap front ends. Other than bolting on the hood, fenders, headlights and bumper and the wiring changes for the headlights what else does it entail?

Is the Conversion thread the appropriate place to post a thread looking for someone who wants to swap these parts and if not where?

Does someone have the headlight wiring schematics for the 05 STi and the 02 WRX?

When I'm done I'm going to paint it 02 Blaze yellow.

Thanks Guys

Default radiator support

So you have to custom build new radiator brackets both for the 04 with the 02 sheet metal and for the 02 with the 04 sheet metal?
Thanks for the info.

That front core support is welded and seam sealed into the car its part of the front frame. You can just order one from subaru and then weld it into your car. The bolt the rest to the front. This is what locates the entire front of the car.

Default front core support

So, I have a complete 02 WRX sitting next to a complete 05 STi.
I have to cut out the front core support from the 02 and weld in a new 05 front core support in its place and then cut out the old front core support from the 05 and weld a new 02 front core support in its place?

Can't just swap the old ones? Is "front core support" the correct name so when I go to the Sub dealer he knows what the heck I am talking about??

Thanks

Cool Is this the right forum to swap clips??

So I want to put the bugeye 02/03 WRX front ent on my 05 STi, is this the right forum to look for someone who wants to swap front ends with me?
Any other input on the mechanics of making this swap? By the way my STi is white.

Thanks

the local forums, and especially classified local sections, would be good places to find swap partners. just make a 'WTT: 05 front end body parts/03' thread.

Lets not let this thread go without a definitive answer tho...

Are we talking all bolt-in parts, or welding?

I thought i've seen people talk about this swap that have done it, and didn't have to weld anything? You can't simply remove all the necessary parts from the donor car on either side, without having to cut and re-weld?

I would like to upgrade from a WRX to STi, but my fav body style is still the 02-03. I am not quite sold on the 06 style yet, and i hate the 04/05 and couldn't own it. So i either buy a 02/03 that has an STi swap, or else buy an 04 and swap front and rear-ends from my 03 before selling. I think i'd prefer that route.

Impreza WRX STi

As far as I know I'm the only one to ever actually complete this. I posted it in the gallery all along the way. You have to seam/spot weld it, there is no way around that. It's a direct swap of OEM Subaru parts, nothing custom is required other than a couple holes drilled in order to prevent you from having to swap more than you need to(for the AC tanks on the side of the radiator supports).

You need the front upper tie bar and radiator supports. You also need the front bumper beem from an 02/03 unless you are going to use a FMIC(I used a FMIC instead).

And completed:

I didn't do the welding(bud's shop did); but it's easy, just some spots that are already marked by Subaru.

Nooooooo
Oh well. Was hoping for bolt-on.
Guess maybe i should look into just getting an 02/03 swapped with an 04 STi driveline in it.

Was there something else you wanted to know about the conversion that I didn't post?

If you get JDM projector headlights or any other aftermarket light that has seperate bulbs for high and low beams there are no wiring conversions to make.

I stopped by my Subaru dealer and talked to the parts guy. I asked about a core support and he quoted me a price of $315. for a set of 6 parts called the core support. It seems you have to buy them all. Two of the parts are horizontal an appear to support the bottom of the radiator, then there are 2 headlight frames plus a couple of other parts. Do I have to buy 2 sets of these, one for the 05 STi and one for the 02 WRX or can I cut out the originals and have them welded back in place?

Thanks for the info, it sure is nice to hear from some one who has already done this.

3 parts if I remember correctly. One goes from fender to fender, the other two go on the sides of the radiator. You don't need anything else. I think it was $200something... You're getting parts for an 02/03, nothing for an 05.

So, you are saying I can't cut out the old parts from the 02 and weld it into the 05 and cut out the parts from thte 05 and weld it into to 02, but instead I have to buy new parts for both cars. Remember, I am starting out with two complete, undamaged cars and need to end up with two complete cars.

Do you have a link to the photos you posted in the galley of the process you went through.

I really need to know what parts I have to order. I assume that when I find someone who wants to trade it will be someone from out of town and the dealer said it takes about a week to get these parts in. I don't want to tie someone's car up for that long. If the parts on the side of the radiator are what I think they are (from the parts diagram the dealer gave me) they also are the brackets that hold the headlights. I'll have to check back with the dealer's parts guy to see if I have to buy all 6 of the pieces as a set. Do you think it might be possible to mail or fax you a copy of these parts to verify those that I actually need to purchase to make this swap work?
Thanks Bob

If you have both cars complete then you can undo the stock spotwelds and redo them after swapping. You don't need to "cut" anything. If you have the two cars you don't need to order anything. You will need to disconnect and then have your AC recharged.
