225/45-17. Good luck finding any 225-40s.

225/45r17 is the right size. If yours are rubbing, you have got wheels that have way too low offset. That's your problem, not the tires.

Rubs where? What brand/model tires? What's their rated width at widest point?

What is the offset of your wheels?

Some 225s are wider than others, so one brand/model of tire may rub while another doesn't. As well, it depends on the offset of your wheels. If you're running a wheel with +53 offset and someone else is running +48, that other person has 5mm of more clearance between their tire and strut. If your offset is really low, say +40, then you run the risk of rubbing on the outside fender, again being 8mm farther out than that person running a +48 offset.

I recently put 17" rims on my Forester, with 225/45/R17 tires. I was very worried about rubbing as my stock 16"s with 215/60/R16s rated at 8.5" wide(at widest) was only around a 1/4" from the strut. I made darn sure I (a) wasn't going to a higher offset than stock(+48) and (b) was running a "narrow" 225 tire on that rim. By narrow, I mean less than 9" at widest for a 225 tire. If I got a wide 255, say something that was a good 9.5" at widest, I probably would be rubbing during cornering. As well, if I ran a +50, +52, or +53 that some of you guys are running, I again would be very close to rubbing.

Note: I'm running 17x7.5 @ +48 offset Rota Subzeros with 225/25/R17 Toyo Proxies4 tires, speced at 8.9" at widest(actually about 8.75" in reality, did a quick check with tape measure when I got them).

I know the Pirelli PZero Nero's are also speced at 8.9" on TireRack, so that may be a good option too when looking for tires.

So...it depends...

Again, what wheels you use and what tires you use?

ouch. So you're rubbing on the fender then...correct? ...poor wheel bearings too

...if your offset guess is correct Are you certain? Should be physically imprinted on the back of the wheel somewhere.

Send them back. You really need a wheel with much closer offset to stock than +38. Stock wheels are +53 or +55, so you're pushing the wheels 15-17mm outward, which is a lot. Most of us use 48-53 aftermarket wheels.

Yeah, 48 is a much better offset. You won't have rubbing problem. Tell Discount Tire they sell you the wrong wheel. They need to take them back.

Tell him 1000 community members of Nasioc will personally spank him if he doesn't.

Read the offset Sticky at the top of the Tire & Wheel forum. Heck, print it out and bring it to him. Being someone in the business of selling wheels and tires, he should at the very least have tools(computer with specs for each brand/model) or know what can fit on what cars. Even physical inspection can clearly indicate what can and can not work.

The main key is you need something in the range of 53-48 offset to both fit well AND more importantly keep the wheel bearings happy. The further you get away from this range, your wheel bearings will fail much quicker than their normal life expectancy.

He's being a dork, but that's part of his job. The less he has to deal with you, the easier his job is.

We have a Discount Tire in town now, maybe about a year old. I breifly checked them out, got a few quotes on some tires. Their prices were the highest in town, by quite a bit actually. I just ignore their existance now, as I have cheaper options elsewhere. I can't say much about wheel prices or package pricing, not something I've really shopped for till very recent.

for 17''x7.5'' rims you need an offset of about 47-50mm, anything lower than that and you are rubbing fenders and screwing with your bearings. any higher than that range will make your tires rub on your struts. the offset info thread is in this forum, you should check it out.

Just curious what you have for tires? Very few selections in that size, at least here in the states.

I've got an '05 RS with 17 X 7.5 Rota Torque wheels with +48mm offset wrapped with 225/45 Falken Azenis RT615 tires, one of the wider section width tires out right now. I autocrossed it last week with the stock suspension and the car taking the turns on three wheels like a dog taking a pee brake and I get zero rubbing. After I read this post, I picked up four co-workers during lunch today and we went over a couple of speed bumps and still no rubbing, not even a hint. Like everyone said, if you're 10mm off in offset, then it's the wheels.

yes that works fine. While wider has its advantages, 17x7 +48 is a perfect fit for your car. You can still get 225/45/17 tires but some people go narrower.

I'd run 225/45 even on a 17x7 rim. I have before, it fits fine. You get more sidewall protection, and closer to stock tire diameter. Unless you have a wagon, I see no reason to go 215/45/17.
