Default How do I tell if my 98 Outback is DOHC or SOHC

Is there a way to tell w/o tearing apart the engine? I have a phase II block, and think that the engine I have might be a replacement rather than the one that came w/ the car.

TIA

Sam

Open your hood and look at the front of the engine. You are going to need to look at the heads, or the plastic over the heads. OK, follow the belts to the front left or right of the engine. The black plastic cover will have either one or two circles facing you. If there is only one circle, then it is the SOHC. If there are two indented circles, then you have the DOHC.

Yes.

Every BD/BG (that's 95-99 in the US) has a DOHC.

Every car after that (2000+) has a SOHC.

Close but no cigar.

The '95 psuedo Legacy Outback had a 2.2 SOHC.
The '96 Legacy Outback MT had a 2.2 SOHC; AT had a 2.5 DOHC.

Closer, but still no cigar..ok i'll give you half of one. Subaru phased in the SOHC ej25 in '99. Some late model '99 Outbacks had the single cam. As for the MY98, they are all DOHC. I have one of each, a '98 DOHC and a '99 SOHC...they are totally different beasts.
