Oil Analysis: 7,247mi on Mobil1 5w30 (WRX)
Iron wear jumped up a bit over last time, but still pretty low. Oil appears to be holding up ok. Could probably extend oil drains further to 8-9000 miles without trouble, but will probably keep the changes between 7000-7500 miles for now. The change at 11999 miles used a mix of Syntec, M1 and Castrol GTX, the change at 6,660 miles was using M1 0w30. Last edited by drees; 01-13-2004 at 02:57 AM. |

what's your driving habit like during those 7200 miles?
the more i look at these oil analysis, the more i'm thinking my 5k mi change interval can be extended i do do some spirited canyon run bout 2 times a month, then again, i do have an oil cooler........hmmmm btw, i also have a wrx wagon, on mobil1, actually, all my fluids, except brake and clutch is mobil1 product |

The car is my daily driver, so I drive it a bit over 40 miles every day. Most of those miles are cruising on the freeway at 70-80 mph. I will typically do one full throttle run though most of 3rd gear getting on the freeway if traffic permits. I'm probably fairly easy on the oil.
It looks like the 5w30 Mobil1 will start degrading in performance soon, but I could probably get at least 8-10k miles out of it and still be OK. From what I understand 10w30 should hold up better under longer drain intervals because it needs less viscosity improvers. Safe to run 10w30 here in Socal, too. |

it runs ~ $20, and an extra $10 if you want the TBN calculated. TBN tells you how much active additive is left in the oil when you drained it. This is an indicator of whether you could've run the oil a bit longer.

I just wish it were easier to change just the filter without so much oil loss/mess. I have been changing the filter every 4k miles and topping up the level to 8k and then doing a complete change. Changing syn oil every 3k is such a waste.

How do you collect the oil to send it in for analysis? It seems like it would be really easy to get dirt in with the used oil and foul the analysis...? Whenever I drain my oil, it's a complete MESS: dirt, dust, cat hair, road scum and grease from my gloves/hands...
Not to mention that I don't have a clean oil tray. |

I have a a Fumoto Valve to help with my oil drains, but the process is nearly the same with or without it.
1. Warm up engine 2. Take off drain plug or open valve, have your oil sample container ready. 3. While oil is coming out hold the container into the stream until almost full, then pull away. This won't take long, the sample is only a few ounces. 4. Let rest of oil drain out. I've used this procedure on multiple cars and I've been able to get a sample without spilling a drop every time. The trick is to angle the sample container into the stream at about a 45 degree angle. If I lay something down on the ground, I can change the oil with only getting a bit of oil on my hands when I change the filter. With some latex gloves on, I don't even have to wash up when I'm done! |

That sounds easy... Do you just buy your sample containers at the store, or does the analysis company send them to you? I'm assuming you use a brand new one each time.

I've been using the cheap Proline filter from PepBoys (same as the Purolator filter).

How long a filter or oil can go can greatly vary depending on the oil you're using and the quality of the filter and the type of driving you do.
In my case, it seems that even cheap filters can go at least 7247 miles. |

What does the "TBN=5.1" tell you? Someone mentioned it has to do with how many active additives are left, but the report doesn't give any comparison numbers.
Thanks for the helpful report, I was thinking of going 5K mile intervals but I'll probably extend it to 7.5K now with absolutely no guilt or worry! |
